INJURY-ravaged Canberra have had to apply for special salary cap dispensation from the NRL in order to field a full side against Cronulla in Saturday night's second qualifying final.
With second-rower Ben Jones suffering a season-ending knee injury playing last weekend for feeder team Souths Logan in the Queensland Cup and utility Marshall Chalk suffering a broken thumb, the Raiders are down to just 16 available players - forcing them to seek permission from the NRL to exceed the salary cap by blooding Toyota Cup star Joel Thompson.
The latest injury blows leave the NRL's sixth-placed team with as many players on the sideline, with Phil Graham (knee), Lincoln Withers (knee), Michael Weyman (groin), William Zillman (knee), Troy Thompson (Achilles) and Glen Turner (knee) also ruled out for the season.
In addition, Canberra have sacked Todd Carney, stood down Bronx Goodwin for disciplinary reasons and released Michael Dobson to Hull KR, while Tom Learoyd-Lahrs is suspended until after the grand final on a dangerous throw charge - leaving only Chalk, Marc Herbert (knee) and winger Justin Carney (eye) as possible reinforcements if the Raiders advance further into the play-offs.
Having already reached the NRL's $4.1 million salary cap limit and used the second-tier allowance of $350,000 for players from outside their top squad, the Raiders had to ask for dispensation to be allowed to play Thompson in last Sunday's win over the Bulldogs.
"We've just managed to limp into the finals," Canberra chief executive Don Furner said. "We're down to the absolute bare bones at the moment and if Joel couldn't play then me or one of the coaching staff would have to get out there and play."
Raiders football manager David Sharpe added: "I've just got a new pair of boots so I might have a run, or maybe we could use [coaches] Neil Henry or David Furner".
But the situation is so dire that the Raiders have been using another untried rookie in Cy Lasscock as 18th man.
However, Lasscock is due to line up for Souths Logan in the Queensland Cup grand final against against Ipswich on Saturday afternoon and would struggle to get to Cronulla in time for the 6.30pm kick-off.
Should someone else be injured, Canberra would have to decide whether to risk an injured Chalk or again go to the NRL to seek further salary cap relief so Lasscock can make his debut.
Meanwhile, Sydney Roosters prop Mark O'Meley has been cleared to play in Friday night's opening finals match against Brisbane after pleading guilty to a grade-one careless high tackle charge.
No action was taken against Roosters centre Setaimata Sa after the NRL match review committee decided his off-the-ball tackle on Dragons back-rower Ben Creagh last Friday night was not intentional.
"It happened so quick and Ben Creagh raised his hands as if he was about to get the ball," match review commissioner Greg McCallum said. "If you are going to run as a decoy, you've got to be prepared to be tackled."
