With the imminent departure of Joel Clinton and Peter Wallace it is becoming increasingly obvious that Penrith are struggling to both retain and recruit quality players. Crowd numbers are down and sponsorship revenue is becoming harder for the club to secure on a long term basis.
It's no secret that Penrith is unattractive to young players. It's bitterly cold and miserable in winter and the closest beach is over 2 hours away. Unfortunately it's not the type of environment that will draw the likes of Inglis, Gasnier or Sonny Bill to the foot of the Blue Mountains. I have to say it's a sad indictment on a once proud club who in their heyday played entertaining football that brought the crowds rolling in on a weekly basis. These days the Panthers are resigned to paying "overs" to sign fringe first graders like Nathan Smith and have to rely on developing junior players to remain competetive.
In fact the only good thing going for them is an inspirational coach who keeps them in touch with the competition leaders by getting 110% out of his players each and every week.
Actually, I think I'll get Phil Gould onto the case and see if he can get the wheels in motion...
