'Simply not good enough': Annesley tells refs to lift their game

Errors happen that’s life and sport. However if we can fix those errors we should.

I’m a fan of an NFL style “challenge system”. 2 challenges per half

Where have I said anything about a conspiracy. The NRL could not organize a root in a brothel without f**king it up somehow.

I said that they were wildly inconsistent. And a fair bit of the time incompetent.

As professionals, they simply need to do better.

Edit to add* kudos to you for reffing in the Riverina. My gripe is not, and has never been with grade refs.

NRL professionals are refereeing a completely different sport, or so it seems most of the time, by their own (and the games) making.

There's conspiracy rubbish all over the forum, particularly from Panthers fans towards Klein at the moment.

NRL refs are reffing a different sport, but it's not their own making. They are told how to ref in order to produce the best entertainment product possible. We saw this last year when we had the crackdown after everyone whinged about deliberate penalties, then everyone whinged about the crackdown so the NRL told the refs to back off. After Round 11 or 12 or whenever it was we saw a completely different interpretation of the rules. It's why we often see completely different rules for Origin as well.

Our own NRL referee development officer told us not to watch what the NRL refs do as they are refereeing to what the NRL tells them in order to produce a better TV entertainment product, not to the rules.

If there is not something between Klein and Penrith how is it you can win >50% of games over 5 years but <25% with one referee. It just doesn't add up.
Give me an explanation that makes any logical sense how this can be.

It definitely isn’t good enough, I liked how Annesley approached the subject on NRL 360 last night. He should do a trip to the UK & liaise with the officials over there. Their referees are light years ahead in standard compared the referees in the NRL.

It's a coincidence.

Look at this year, Penrith had Klein in R1 v Parramatta, R3 v Melbourne, R7 v Souths, R19 v Raiders. Lost all 4. Is the common denominator Klein or the fact that all 4 teams are above Penrith on the ladder, including 3 top 4 teams? Or I suppose it's Klein's fault that Penrith lost 32-2 to Melbourne?

Now if this is true, does that not open up a whole can of worms re the forums conspiracy theories ?
If the NRL tell refs to interpret rules differently to , and I use the term very loosely, "increase" the entertainment product, then what is stopping them instructing the refs to artificially assist a side from lets say Western Sydney, who happen to have a brand new stadium, into the finals ?

Why couldnt they instruct refs to interpret rules differently between teams?

Sounds like you are feeding the conspiracy theories with that comment.

Referees go into matches with preconceptions on teams and players and referee accordingly
It has been happening for a long time and unfortunately nothing is going to change!

'If' what do you mean if? The NRL publicly told the refs to interpret rules differently last year before and after the crackdown.

And then you get into conspiracy rubbish, thought you didn't believe in that crap?

Amazing! It's all a coincidence. A coincidence that has been going on for years!

Yes. Get over it. Every team has statistical outliers like that. If you think Klein deliberately dogs the Panthers 1/4 of the time you are geniused.

I didn't, until you claim to be a referee, and then claim inside knowledge that the NRL instructs the referees to follow specific interpretations of the rules to benefit themselves, TV, or potentially specific teams.

They are competent. And you are absolutely expecting perfection. They make a couple errors every game and you whinge non-stop. Seriously, do you think there are 'competent' referees just hiding out somewhere in the bush? The reason they make mistakes is because it's a f**king hard job and no one wants to do it.

There are errors all the time and I can cop those. You don't see my 'whinging non stop'. But if you think the refs on Saturday night were displaying competency, your standards are way too low.

I run 2 competitions in the Riverina, as well as play in and referee in them, and I see rubbish refereeing and skewed penalty counts every week. I get rubbished for my refereeing as well. I got sent an anonymous letter the other week accusing me of cheating. I don't want to do the job, I do it because if I don't then my mates don't get a game. There's maybe 12 refs in the area for 20+ games. Some of them are over 60. If you haven't experienced inconsistent reffing in local footy then you haven't experienced much local footy.

When I'm playing, the refs are inconsistent. When I'm reffing, I'm inconsistent. I know I am because there's no way to be in every position at once on the field while trying to watch 3 different things that happen in a fraction of a second.

This conspiracy bullshit just makes NRL supporters look like morons. f**k off with it already.
One referee I noticed on the weekend looked slightly inimidated when he was trying to explain a ruling to the player. The pressure I noticed on his face had a look of if he wasn't getting well paid for refereeing, he would have walked long ago.

Artificially slowing down the ruck would solve a lot of problems....but fans seem to love the touch footy these days.
Wait, what?

Artificially slowing down the ruck? Isn't that what everyone accuses Melbourne of doing? Says it's ruining the game?

f**k off. Ashley Klown was considered a leading ref when he was over there, he's as inconsistent as any.

I'm an advocate of a slower ruck.

As long as all teams have the same opportunity.
A slower ruck does not equal a ruined game.

Give each team 2, or 3, or "x" amount of seconds from the call of "held" to the act of playing the ball.

Artificially slowing the ruck will eliminate a lot of the wrestling, encourage legs tackles instead of penalising them, encourage coaches to develop positive attacking plays instead of relying on touch footy supersonic ruck speed tactics.

What we are watching right now is a Bill Harrigan /Super League version of RL .

The Panthers game was a disgrace, they were into the ref from the get go, the fans, Maloney, Cleary, all of them. It was as though because they were the feel good story and at home in front of a packed crowd, they were entitled to the 50/50 calls. And at the end of it, I couldn't even say the Raiders even got the rub of the green. Then there are others like the Warriors game which was highway robbery.

Pun intentional.

Monty Betham says Warriors officiating 'worst in 25 years', apology isn't enough
JACKSON THOMAS
https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/leagu...ing-worst-in-25-years-and-apology-isnt-enough

Warriors fans and players have long put up with it, but former hooker Monty Betham says refereeing has hit its worst point in club history and something must be done.

In the wake of the Warriors' controversial two-point loss to the Eels on Saturday, it was the men in the middle who came under the most fire for several dubious decisions that left plenty on both sides of the Tasman scratching their heads.

The key moments were two clean one-on-one strip penalties that went against the Warriors (who finished on the wrong side of a 9-2 penalty count) and a late forward pass ruling that cost Gerard Beale the match winner.

Social media erupted in the aftermath with fans demanding answers and many claiming there was a conspiracy against the lone New Zealand club.

Roger Tuivasa-Sheck reacts after one of many contentious decisions ultimately cost his side victory.
Betham played more than 100 games for the Warriors between 1999-2005, and said Saturday's officiating was an all time low point for the game.

"The refereeing against the Warriors is at a point where it's the worst it's been in 25 years, it's ridiculous," Betham said.

"Over the years we all [as players] and fans feel that there is a bit of a bias against the Warriors and that may or may not be the case.

"In fact I've personally seen Australian players come over from other clubs and even say 'wow this is tough' – but it's more than that now.

"We always just kind of sucked it up and said 'oh well that's the way it is' but It's complete incompetence now, and Stephen Kearney's comments post match really fired me up, I couldn't have agreed more."

Former Warriors captain Monty Betham says the quality of refereeing has reached an historic low.
Following his side's loss, Kearney took aim at the referees' ruling on one-on-one strips in particular, saying if they can't rule on it accurately the rule should be "p..... off" all together.

Like most, Betham was among those stunned at those calls as much as any, but took particular issue with the late forward pass ruling.

After a brilliant solo break from Roger Tuivasa-Sheck, it was a forward pass call that ultimately cost the Warriors the go-ahead try, and Betham took to social media to illustrate how just minutes earlier the referees had missed a blatant forward pass from the Eels.

"It's tough, you feel for the players because the should have won in spite of the ridiculous penalty count, but then that pass was ruled back," he said.

"It's common sense. The mechanics of a flick pass, which was what Roger threw, it has to go backwards. It's actually really hard to throw a pass forward like that."

Monty Betham says as a player, biased refereeing against the Warriors was just part of the game.
Referees boss Graham Annesley will give his weekly address on Monday afternoon, and may apologise for several rulings in the contest and hand down sanctions to referees Chris Sutton and Chris Butler.

Roger Tuivasa-Sheck looked to have set-up the match winner for his side with this flick pass, only for it to be ruled forward.
But Betham said that would come as little vindication for fans and the Warriors playing group.

"So what?," he said.

"The referees get a slap on the wrist and they're done with it, but this has a much larger effect than just the refs missing one game.

"For the Warriors, let's be honest they often let themselves down but this year and I said it before it's [the officiating] the worst it's been in 25 years, they have been penalised out of five competition points at least. That gets them into the eight.

"So it starts to effect the club's bottom line, bums on seats and trying to recruit players because nobody will want to come to a club that isn't playing finals football. There has to be more accountability and the NRL need to wake up."

New Zealand Rugby League player of the century, and former Warriors coach Mark Graham didn't mince words when giving his thoughts on the officiating on Saturday either, and believed it was time the NRL looked elsewhere for referees.

"Whatever they're doing now, it's not working, so I suggest the NRL start looking for referees somewhere else," he said.

"The forward pass was a joke, you look at the angle he threw that Roger would dead set have to dislocate his elbow to throw that forward."

1564360922265.jpg

Mark Graham said he wouldn't have been able to excersise the same level of restraint as Stephen Kearney.
Graham applauded the players and coaches restraint in not going harder at the referees, also.

"Good on them, I would have copped the fine and unleashed in that press conference because it's not on," he said.

"I don't think Kearney and Cameron Gerorge have come out with enough urgency, this has been going on for far too long and even in my coaching days it was going on."

Graham believed there was a clear bias against the Warriors on the part of the referees, whether they even knew they were doing it or not, and said it had been going on since the club entered the competition.

The loss leaves the Warriors sitting 12th on the competition ladder and needing a minor miracle to make the finals.

They host Canberra on Friday at Mt Smart Stadium.
