There are public council golf courses.

They are not multi purpose.

This ground clearly was. So now kids can't even kick a ball around when it s not in use.

Nothing on that sign in regards to fines or anything. f**k em. Go and play what you want there. Nothing they could legally do about it.

Awaits the Gould rant about AFL taking over Western Sydney as now playing fields are being bought up!

I realise the ground issue is a council thing, but it would be nice to at least have somebody with political influence on our side.

we don't need presidents or prime ministers, we've got Russel Crowe!

If this is "sporting apartheid" then it is sure to be exposed and treated for what it is by our fair minded and forward thinking Australian populace.

Is 'AFL' even the name for a code, or just the competition?

NRL is the pro level, kids play rugby league
Superrugby is the pro level, kids play rugby union
A-League is the pro level, kids play soccer
Kids do not play NRL, ARU, CA - so why AFL? Seems a stupid misnomer.

And while it is expected that the pro-levels of sport support an assist juniors - this is done mostly in kind. The NRL or ARU have no business getting involved in local ovals or muscling in on other junior sport.

Junior sport is run by volunteers and is surprisingly co-operative - rugby union, league, cricket, little A's etc all co-exist and often share grounds and training facilities. They have to get on with each other and they do. Plenty of families are involved in multiple sports and codes.

This AFL exclusivity on local junior grounds is not the way things are done. Using the pro level of sport to exclude kids from ovals is wrong. If the AFL administrators feel the need to exclude kids then they can buy land and develop their own facilities. The spirit of having council facilities there for use by the community is lost on these people. That they found a council willing to cave in is not surprising.

It would be interesting to see if the offer was made public, if any other groups had the opportunity to make submissions, if any of the residents who have funded the ownership and upkeep of these facilities were consulted. Or if this was a closed-door deal.

What is the commercial rate for permanent hire of this much space in that part of Sydney? If financial gain is the sole motivator for the council - was the market tested? Were any policies breached?

If the $100,000 was not the motivator then why did they do this?

It would also appear that this is commercial use of the land.

Is it an allowable use?

Should a DA have been lodged ?

You pretend to know a lot about what's happening in Sydney when you live on the the other side of the world...

You sound like an AFL bigot.
There plenty of people who live in the UK who are not American but know what's going/enjoy the NFL.

How about someone in the area plays some footy on it. And then when old mate tries to do something about it, send an email to a sensationalist rag like the DT and watch the shitstorm unfold. If nothing else it will be entertaining.

The big question is will the rest of the media pick up on this story?

This is the type of thing the Telecrap would lap up.

If I lived there I'd take the kids there to play just to flout the so called AFL "authority".

Or I'd take my dog for a walk and a dump.

I'm not usually one to encourage social disorder, but the man who took his car down theur and did massive doughnuts all over their f*cking precious ground would have my eternal admiration.

Ringrose and Monty Bennett ovals are adjacent, part of the same complex adjoining Wenty Leagues. Similar situation with McCredie at Guildford. Not sure if the Ringrose footy field is ever used for cricket given there's a cricket oval right next to it - I vaguely recall getting tackled on a f**king pitch? I dont remember tbh.

I am fairly sure both Wenty and Guildford Leagues pay for upkeep - those 2 grounds are in 10000 times better condition than any other footy field in the Parra district. Loved playing on them, other than the fact that Guildford would usually put 50 on us

Gipps Rd has always been used for fagball and athletics. Greystanes PS used to have its athletics carnival there, presumably still do. Surely activities like this will still be allowed? Utterly ridiculous if not. If schools and such aren't banned (and I can't see council rangers patrolling it every day to stop kids from kicking a ball around) then it's not so much a big deal, other than the signs being f**king arrogant dickheadery.

I used to be on our local council's sports committee and we determined who would be the tenants for each ground in our shire.

Where I live this sign would pretty much be illegal, sports grounds belong to the rate payers to do as they see fit.

I notice that no one has taken ownership of the sign, normally it says by Order, The Mayor or what ever depending on which council or shire its in.

The council is there to provide facilities for the residents. That includes parks for sport. If the council refused to build and maintain parks out of their own budget there would not be a council. In fact, here is what happens or happened elsewhere.

Years ago Penrith council found blocks of land near suburban centres such as Emu Plains, St Marys and others, erected a cheap hall and sold it to the Scouting association for $1.

My wife used to have her primary school sports carnival on Jubilee Oval at Carlton, when it wasnt used by some lunatics wearing red "V"s who called it "Kogra"

I recently went to Parra to check out the statue of Ray Price, and found a local school doing the same thing.

North Sydney Bears had a hell of a time during their tenure as the major tennant at North Sydney Oval getting a decent playing surface there. The ground had a reputation as being concrete like, especially the cricket pitch area. The council would refuse, because any surface upgrade would disadvantage the cricketers.

Some grounds are council owned, but leased to a sporting organisation for their exclusive use. Many older suburban grounds were organised in this way, but a significant ongoing lease was usually in order. Plus, when clubs on-sold advertising signage there became legal issues surrounding trade and competition, famously seen at Lang Park when the Broncos were sponsored by Powers Brewery.

The fact is that there is a far cry between a professional team with a multi million dollar operating budget catering for 20 000 spectators and professional sportsmen, and a suburban park designed to walk the dog, throw a frisbee around with the kids and maybe cater for some junior sport on weekends.

I also know of very few League grounds that uses all the available recreation areas on site. The SFS/SCG has the old SCG No 2, plus the expanse of Moore Park. Parramatta Stadium has Parramatta Park. Penrith has a huge expanse of grass. Ausgrid, NSO and Bluetongue have expanse around them, with ovals not far away.

Besides, councils have a huge Parks and Gardens budget. Doesnt Holroyd run Central Gardens? Anyway, the idiots who put that sign up have in fact banned the Goannas, which are not an AFL club. Mention that in the next email.

Im not a local, so maybe the suggestion is not really mine to make. But it would be good to have a well publicised LU touch footy gala day on GF day on that very oval.

If anybody lives near that oval and is on the forum, go and kick a steeden around on it and see what they do. Bring a camera and multiple witnesses, lets see what the merkins do about it. Did rate payers money contribute to the oval? If so they have no right to lock residents out. A dog act a day from the afl admin at the moment
