The new AMMI park where the Storm play now was supposed to be a RL ground 50 years ago, the VFL bought the land or leased it to stop RL.

That was in 1925 or thereabouts. The VRL (Harry Sunderland) had negotiated to hold RL games on the field inside the Melbourne speedway, and were within a few hours of signing a lease contract, but were gazumped by the VFL - who I think ultimately played less than a handful of games there over the next decade. But it didn't matter, as by the end of 1926, without an enclosed oval to charge gate-takings, the VRL was bankrupt and the clubs all became amateur RU clubs, re-forming as the VRU.

Cheers mate.

Seriously if you wasn't an RL fan but just a ratepayer you wouldn't care, in fact you'd probably be applauding the council for bringing in extra revenue to maintain their facilities. I know the WARL grounds are fenced and I am guessing they are for the use of RL only, might not have a sign but they are. Personally I would love for the WARL to have the funds to set up RL pitches all over Perth to encourage more players and clubs to start up. If there were no RL pitches in the council area and a big demand for them and they were spending rate payers money on an AFL pitch then you might have a point. As it is they are still supplying other sporting facilities for other codes but with this one have off set some of the running costs by making it sole use. We have a golf course that is council paid for, I doubt they would let you start playing footy on the fairway!

That you could not use unless playing AFL. As a taxpayer, would you be happy that your local facilities were restricted to one sport? Maybe in Perth you are use to being told how to think.. Over here we are used to doing that ourselves.

He's not being honest about the use of McCredie Park either:
http://www.holroyd.nsw.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0015/6126/mcredieparkpom.pdf

I'd give the prick a call if I was a ratepayer - which I shamefully claimed to be.

One of these things I just automatically assumed this was a problem in somebody else's backyard, before realising I actually AM a Holroyd ratepayer. My money is going to fund this rubbish.

When's the next election? I know where my vote will be going.

More from John Perry:

Tim McCredie main oval is rugby league only cricket and hockey are played on a separate ground and cricket has not been played on Ringrose for years it is played on Monty Bennett oval beside Ringrose and is cricket only. The local afl club built the ground at Gipps road on the late 70's and provided most of the maintenance costs until the afl provided some funding a couple of years ago,so I look forward to talking to you

The SMH infers that RL is losing out, but that ground has been around for 30 years and not used for RL. Cricket is losing out, not RL.

I can't see any issue with a sport having an exclusive lease to play/train on an oval when it needs/wants to - and there are plenty of other examples of that to be pointed to - unless there is a shortage of grounds and there is scheduling room to host more games of all codes/sports on this ground.

However, when it isn't in use, the norm in Sydney/NSW with unfenced junior sporting facilities is that they remain free to anyone to make use of informally eg kicking a ball, touch footy games, doing laps, or walking the dog.

That's what the issue is with that sign/ground.

I am not angry at VFL, I am angry that democratic council would sell thier rates payers assests to one group to the detriment of all others.

It is disgusting and I would hope League would not do this.

I wouldn't be suprised if the Victorian "lifelong AFL fan"
who runs that council would have given them the field for free if it came down to it.

The assistant Mayor/Mayor of this particular area was on the radio this morning. He is a massive AFL fan, hence AFL investing in his area. Apparently he’s lobbied AFL for 10+ yrs to invest in the ground and once they decided on GWS they fixed up the ground and fascilities to the tune of $100k and the council matched it, apparently. He also said that at a similar ground the council put in a turf wicket and then lobbied Cricket Australia to upgrade the fascilities over about 5 yr period but they did nothing. AFL came with the money and the rest is history, the cricket pitch was dug up and it became an AFL only ground. He also said that Rugby League was offering nothing in his area but were in fact just asking for a hand out. This dude got quite angry actually. He also said AFL rent’s some other ground off the council for their pre-season training, which he loved. He was obviously a true believer in AFL. IThere’s no point to this story, just thought it should be out there.

Ok. I emailed the tard. He tried to tell me cricket isn't played at Ringrose oval. Despite this morning the green keeper preparing the pitch.

Here's his response:

fact no cricket is played on Ringrose oval,Fact afl has used Gipps road since the late 70's no objections,if you want to listen to the facts give me a call on ,or is just you don't like afl John Perry

If anyone has a draw for that district?? I will send it to the tard. I told the idiot it wasn't 'exclusivly played as cricket and baseball/softball was also played. Still no response

Now I can understand if the AFL owned the land, built all facilities and maintained it with a dollar from the taxpayer - that would be in the same vein as a private golf course.

But it's public land.

100k is pretty cheap for exclusive rights!
