Stalled and stagnant Sydney clubs

12 was the number

14 was decided to allow 13 home and away rounds ie 26 rounds only
Bradley report in 1992 recommended 14 clubs. The original Superleague proposal was for 12 clubs.

"...to reduce the number of clubs in Sydney, will be very hard for the League to implement given the long playing traditions of some of those clubs. In the long term, however, it is likely that Sydney is not going to be able to support eleven clubs as it does at present. Therefore in the long term this is the only viable solution. Sydney based clubs are going to have to move to new areas, merge or be relegated from the League. This is going to be a painful process. In the long term I believe that the ARL should be looking to reduce the number of clubs in the National Competition to fourteen, thus allowing clubs to play two complete rounds. This will mean, assuming that only four new clubs are admitted from areas outside Sydney, that there will be only five clubs based in Sydney."

You put too much weight on a report that is 30 years out of date

It never understood the power if the IP of a RL team

Or the growth in TV revenue and sponsorship where no club needs to rely on a LC anymore

As RL is a TV product there no real reason for teams to exist in far off locations, as the basic TV product of 8 games a weekend wont change

You only need thise lications for junior development ala Dragons in Illawarra, Easts on CC

Even Bris 2 and NZ 2 expansion talk is only about TV

I put no weight on it, just showing that rationalistion has long been in the minds of the Comp organisers.

Problem is Tv isnt really covering the clubs costs, many are still losing money or reliant on millions from the LC. The TV grant would need to go up to around $18-20mill a year if we are going to stop caring all together about fanbased revenue and accept the NRL is nothing more than a tv product like Neighbours or Mandalorian.

Vicky Kicky house must be delighted with the return they are getting from the 100's of million they have invested in the midgets

or maybe the reply from someone who knows sht lol. Some investments take a while to pay off, some fall on their face, if you dont make them you'll never know what might have been.
Remind me how long the midgets have been going and how many $100's of millions Vicky Kicky house has invested in them?

In the grand scheme of things not very long, and a sht load of money! Around $25-30mill a year. I guess when you've got the money you can take riskier investments on?

As much as it pains me to say this, i kinda agree with PR, not thinking Giants will ever be a success, but with RL in a 5 milion pop Melbourne carving out a niche fanbase, giants can do the same in 5 million pop sydney, but it will take as long as the storm has been successful in Melbourne, and Sydney already has the swans, and they are a pretty bland uninspiring and uninventive mascot and color scheme, so there is a lot not going for it... at least storm has no other team nearby and its purple unique color, plus all the winning culture.. (cough cough, rule bending) that has helped them succeed
But Gold Coast Suns is a joke really, thats just a burning money pit

St George were red and white and still are red and white even with the merge will Illawarra so if Swans have a " pretty bland uninspiring and uninventive mascot and color scheme" then that would also be the case for St George Illawarra too wouldn't it?

Ridiculous- Your Penrith were Brown and White for a period of time which was strange as how many brown and white panthers are there and of course other jumpers of strange colour combinations and designs as well over the years.

Swans have been red and white since 1874 when they were formed as South Melbourne in any case

One thing working against GWS Giants is the socio-economic trends of Western Sydney. There are plenty of rich snobby wankers who love their onionball on the North Shore and Northern Beaches. Since onionball has nose-dived into obscurity its fans have jumped on the Swans' bandwagon. Onionball has never had a large presence out in Western Sydney. I think AwFuL will learn the hard way that GWS Giants won't have the perks that fell into the Swans' lap courtesy of Super League and favourable demographics.

I was talking about GWS giants being bland and uninspiring, i know it wasn't straightforward in the post but the my gist was all about GWS not being AFL money wasted.... please troll on

I haven't got tunnel vision like you as there is room for all sports for kids and adults to participate in and even make a living at here or overseas.

Quite daft to dish other sports you know zilch about because of your prejudice - The so called "Onion" ball as you call Football it is far and away the most popular sport viewing and participation wise in the world

Onionball is what I call rugby union you f**ken idiot!

There's only so much money in the economy and not enough people willing to invest their time and money into multiple sports. The fumbleball fans who have adopted Storm as their second team will always go to the "G" to see their AwFuL club play when the two teams are playing at the same time.
