State of Origin is irrelevant

Id take a win on the weekend for the Cowboys over an International test match win any day of the week, and Id take a QLD victory in 3 weeks time over the next 3 world cups.

International footy is nice to watch because its a rugby league game and its a little bit different from what we see week in week out, but it really means nothing to me to see Australia win again, or lose the odd game here or there. I know kiwis will never understand this, and maybe thats a good thing but SOO has the hatred and history behind it that internationals could only ever dream of.

Your second statement is ignorant of history. Test football was the big cheese prior to SoO. Plenty of history and hatred there. Even after Origin came about, it was still a big deal. It wasn't Origin that killed Test football, but Superjoke. One more reason to hate Uncle Rupert and John Ribot.

How can anything that spins as many dollars as SOO be irrelevant? Who wins isn't relevant but the game makes a fortune out of it. That's why they keep tweaking the concept.

how could they tweak the concept? If it became an inclusive event, and it was scheduled in a way that doesn't interfere with club footy, I wouldn't mind it, but I can't see either of those happening.

If there really is so much passion/hatred/whatever between the two states, then they should become separate nations. That would be great for international footy. After all, if a NSW fan hates Queensland, then how could he support the Australian team, which is built on Queenslanders?

No you don't touch it just leave it....people that wouldn't ordinarily pay much attention to the NRL do to this series, I'm not sure about NSW but pretty much all Queenslanders watch origin....it doesn't really matter if they follow AFL when it comes to origin, they'll cheer their team on.
That's invaluable and as stated makes revenue for the overall game.

International nrl doesn't even garner interested from some nrl fans, it's sad but it's how it is and until England and NZ actually bag more wins its staying that way.

Sure am mate! :D

You would fit in well at channel 9.

I imagine they are the type of fans that would give the game away and go watch some other sport if their club was kicked out of the NRL. If you are a fan of rugby league, and not just your club/state, you want it to do well on all levels, from U6s to NRL to Origin to ESL to the World Cup to amateur coaching clinics in the Phillipines. Any fan who puts down a part of the game isn't a fan. They may be a fan of the NRL but not of rugby league as a whole.

Most people don't and that's the point NO ONE CARES

Then why did 293,000 people attend the last world cup?

Super League killed internationals. The last Ashes series in Australia had big crowds. I have no doubt if a 3 test series was marketed well in 2014 the Ashes would sell out Suncorp, AAMI Park and the SFS.

And I am not a big supporter of the Australian test side. I support International rugby league and I want to see all teams do well. I was happy NZ won the World Cup as I would prefer to hear taunts from Kiwis about Australia losing than taunts from Soccer/Union/AFL (yes, AFL) fans that International Rugby League is a joke. Other than that I don't agree with the way Australia has gone about poaching other nation's best players so they can play Origin, nor do I agree with the way they decided not to promote internationals by having the test season off last year.
However I will support them when I attend games.

I'd take a win for the Jets than Australia

Another SOO ratings sensation. Game 3 will be epic. When is the world championship thing on again?

If NSW fans are so desperate - and we are - how come nobody is desperate to beat New Zealand in a test final?

Pretty much everyone would be desperate to beat NZ if they faced them in the final. Australia would be to get them back for 08, England would be because they haven't won a major tournament in ages, and every other team would be because they have never won a world cup.

By the way the World Cup will see big games in Cardiff, London and Manchester. Plus games in France and the first big game in Ireland.

Just because you don't care about internationals doesn't make Origin bigger. A few insular Australians thinking their state comp is more important than the rest of the rugby league world doesn't make it so. It's as dumb as AFL fans thinking their comp is bigger than rugby league worldwide.

18 matches of Origin between 2007 and 2012 (18 being the number of matches in the World Cup) saw 1,125,183 people attend at an average of 62k per game. Australia v New Zealand at the SFS was half that of NSW worst crowds at ANZ that were considered embarrassing and poor (in the pissing down rain) and both matches in Melbourne were 50k, well above Australia v England.

Pretty conclusive which is the bigger deal.

That's just the thing though, it's not just "a few", it's the vast majority. State of Origin is built up for weeks before each game. The fans love it and are faaaar more passionate about it, the players recognise it as the pinnacle of their careers (next to winning a comp) and its what brings in the new fans to the game. You don't hear commentators saying "gee Chris McQueen has had a blinder today, he's really putting his hand up for an Australian jersey". It's a Queensland jersey, and same goes for NSW players in the cusp. That's the top of the rep ladder weather you like/agree with it or not.

That's an average of about 16,000 per game. Not a great point for your argument...

Which is roundabouts NRL average. So no one cares about NRL?
I attended a world cup match. Do I not care? Did the 36,000 other people at that match not care? I thought no one cared?

Er yes, that's right, because crowds in Melbourne and Sydney are the level by which we measure what's bigger in the rugby league world...

Uhhh no they don't. Most players will agree the Australian jersey is a higher honour. Most will put their Four Nations triumphs at the same level as an Origin series win. Do you really think NSW players put losing a series higher than winning a Four Nations?
Who gives a shit about what commentators say?
