What would we say Kearney's "style of play" is?

Will he have us trying to play grinding footy, or razzle dazzle or 4 hit ups and a bomb to Manu? I for one hope he brings the offloads back into our game.

(not a pisstake question, just can't remember what type of style he implemented at the eels, and international footy is different to week in week out NRL footy)

I have some bad news for you.

I don't remember his Eels team that well either, but going off the historical numbers.. they were the worst offloaders in the comp in '11, and 3rd worst in '12. Last in tackle breaks for both years, too. Effective tackle rate was good in 1st year (but they still conceded plenty of points), dropped hugely in the 2nd (and they started conceding ridiculous amounts). Attack was a huge problem in both years, and the collapse from 1st to 2nd year was the defensive stuff dropping down too.

Given the shape of his numbers, it seems as though he was trying to play an ultra conservative game without the go-forward to do it properly in his first year. Low errors, low penalties, high possessions but terrible metres/run, and nothing creative.

2nd year they started conceding more penalties, though the error rate remained low. Their metres/run shot up, but their possessions had dropped dramatically (due to more penalties and tries conceded) - they were a little more efficient in creating, but didn't even get close to offsetting the problems created in the 2nd year. In short; 1st to 2nd year their attack (and go forward) got a little better while they collapsed on D.

I do find it funny (and also a little sad, given his appointment here) that he personally identified Chris Sandow as the guy to run his apparently very structured low-error attack. Luckily the spine is already here at least.. just need to fix the pack. And the defensive issues. Mind you, just fix the first one and the second will naturally fade, at least to a degree. What could the last season have been if we had signed Taumalolo?

Chris Sandow... OMG, hardly a call to have as your signature moment!

and someone suggested Kearney's comments on radio meant he was backing Kidwell in for the Kiwis job therefore isn't bringing him to Auckland)
I think the word was Kidwell to assistant coach here and also as coach for Kiwis, much as Kearney was doing while at Storm and Broncos

At Eels his team played a very dour game. Hardly any second-phase, very predictable lines, etc. At one point in his 2nd year media voices said he'd turned the team into 'unimaginative robots.'

However, his Kiwis side of recent years have thrown an offload or two.

Ah right yeah that makes sense.

Kearney, McFudd, Jones and Kidwell...doesn't inspire me tremendously I have to be honest.

Steve McNamara, that is interesting. Anyone with a clearer guide to his past than I?
Super League coach. From what I gather quite successful one as I seen his teams play in the ESL finals, dont know if hes coached a championship winning side but Id imagine him to only be good for the coaching team which is the best Ive seen it in awhile IMO.

Steve mcnamara as assistant coach?

I'm so clever :)

But seriously, decent appointment. Coached first grade in super league, top 8 finish three times and the two years he missed the finals he only juuuuust missed the 8.

Quit Bradford in 2010 to take up the Pom role until going to the roosters last year. A couple of international coaches on the books should help.

Well it's obvious what's happening here, Doyle is recreating the Kiwi's at the Warriors.
It won't surprise me at all if we see Foran here next season.

Will it work? Honestly who can tell, a weekly grind is different to a few exhibition matches and the odd World Cup, not to mention we'll be missing most of those amazing Kiwi's forwards.

But all that said I'm warming to the Kearney appointment. Uncle Ives would have been my first choice but it was doubtful he'll cross the Tasman, and seriously why would any high profile coach such as Dessie come over here to save our rabble. Kearney is probably the best of the remaining mediocre options.

It'll be interesting to see what recruiting happens over the next couple of weeks and whose let go by the club. Nooks is gonna want to make his own impression on the team and go with a certain style of play.

His last 4-5 years of coaching have all been with the Storm, Broncos and Kiwi's. All have tough, battle hardened forwards, so I can see him making a play for big and mobile props and 2nd rower.

I also think he'll be changing our style of wingers as well. None of the teams above have the crash and bash style of winger. I can't see Ken getting a look in next year. Manu maybe but might need to show a bit of that old winger form of his.

Melboure and Brisbane and the Kiwis of the last 3-4 years, they're all about a quality 9-7-6-1, with hard mobile forwards that can go forward, but nearly tradesman outside backs. And of course there's the odd exception but Bellamy is renowned for taking off-casts and turning them good.

I'm thinking we'll be buying maybe 1-2 pricey but quality big props and/ or big hard back-rowers. And I think maybe a young quick outside back. Unsure what's on the market or what cap space we have left but we'll definitely see us making a play for couple of new recruits. Exciting times ahead!!

I'm hoping so Penrose, but who's available for us to pick up, front rower wise?

Greg Eastwood would be a good pickup I think. Big body, footwork at the line and can pass the ball.

What really seems to have changed in player skill set across the top teams is the ability of the big boys to do something with the ball.

The top 4 teams forward packs are both big and skillfil. The ability of those teams forwards to play the ball at the line or put a player into a hole has been massive this year. Ball players across the park.

Our forwards are small to average in comparison to the and certainly don't have the ball skills of the rest. Actually I can't even think of one of our players who consistently showed top of the line ball handling skills. Ben Muts used to but not this year.

Sam Moa of last year would be good. If McNamara comes onboard, I can see at least one big Pommie boy coming across.

Here's a few options:

Sika Manu is only 29 yrs @ Hull FC
Frank Pritchard 32 yrs @ Hull FC

Josh Charnley 25 yrs plays wing/centre and plays for England. Reminds me of a Josh Mansour type player.

Greg Eastwood 29 yrs and still off contract
Aiden Tolman contracted till 2017
Neilson Asofa-Solomona till 2017
Jordan Maclean till 2017
Gideon Gela-Mosby till 2017 future star WG FB

I'd be throwing the kitchen sink at both
Tom and Jake Trbojevic till 2017. Build our team around them but can't ever see them leaving Manly.
