Andrew Johns is the greatest halfback of all time. When QLD and NSW were relatively equal and both had Joey and Lockyer at the peak of their powers, guess which state was doing the ass whooping.

Then Joey retires, we haven't been near them since.

It has to be Andrew Johns for the "Immortal" system to be taken seriously.

/thread.
Langer was easily Johns' equal, and in some aspects better. (note, I is a Dragons fan and bitterly remember the 92-93 GFs).

The best halfbacks I've seen play are Langer, Johns, Stirling, Stuart. In that order.

Langer was nowhere near close to Johns equal as a kicker of the ball or a defender at the very least.

And in the end, the Immortal idea has drawn a line so damn thin it's almost impossible to have any crediblity to the list.

I mean how much better was Wally Lewis than Brett Kenny? A whisker? Yet Lewis is an Immortal and Kenny is just a 'great' player?

I'll think the same when Johns and Lockyer surely go in. They were great, but 'Immortal' greater than Langer, Stuart or Fittler?

Too damn thin a line. Perhaps a brand new hall of fame with an 'Immortal' wing or something. 4 inductions every year with one headline immortal induction. It should not be so exclusive that 1 player every 5 years gets in, but 1 every year.

example 2015 hall of fame ceremony.

Inductees

Cliff Lyons
Terry Lamb
Shane Webcke
Immortal inductee - Mal Meninga
+1... very well said.

Andrew Johns (is he eligable yet?) Great player anyway you look at it but let's judge him in 10 or 15 years time.
Why? We never had to wait that long for Fulton or Lewis.

Waiting definitely changes things in favour of stats - that dont tell the full story. For example if we waited a generation and picked a backrow from the post war era, 2 blokes that would get huge mentions are Steve Menzies and Nathan Hindmarsh simply for try and tackle stats respectively. No one is mentioning them now.

It's about ability. Johns had the best ability.

I'm a fan of the immortal concept but not it's process.
Totally agree. I reckon the concept survives because the fans and the code overwhelmingly accept it. It certainly aint official and it's credibility is SERIOUSLY compromised with Hadley and Slothfield on the panel!

A question that will get the sea eagle fans frothing at the mouth: if Bob Fulton hadn't been named in the original 4 would he be looked on now as worthy now?
No, simply because of the Wally Lewis hype. Bozo was epic though, with a better player/coaching career than anyone else. Now he's a gimp on a stupid radio show - and that is how he was viewed. FFS he captained City at 19!!!!!

and his 4 kangaroo tours and being the QLD and Oz captain .......and.....and
See my thoughts above re Beaver. Meninga was a has been on his last tour and only picked because the ARL was into manufacturing sporting greats. Who remembers his last test in Australia, v France at Parramatta, when Arko proclaimed him the greatest player of all time!!!!!

Rogers and Cronin>>>>>>>>>>>>Meninga

Steve Rogers was a more talented player than Mal Meninga. That seems to be the opinion of almost anyone ive ever talked to who had the opportunity to see both in full flight.

Rogers wuldn't look out of place in an all-time post WWII XIII, alongside Reg Gasnier.
Agree. Sludge playing for a to club at the time would be spoken of higher than he is.

Completely agree Bobby. Daley will always be NSW (c) in an all time blues side. Amazing leader. Defense of a second rower, Running game of a fullback, agility of a centre and ball skills of a half. He was a great, great player and i rate him above Fittler and Lockyer as the greatest 5/8 of the last 25 years.

Great player but too many injuries at the back end of his career stifled his effectiveness. In his last few years he could barely run.

At his best he was magnificent, easily as good or better than Johns, langer, Stuart and fittler of the same era.

Its easy to forget how good he was in a team that contained Meninga, Clyde, Walters, Stuart, Mullins Belcher etc.

How many blokes

Played for a record amount of games for one club?
Played for state and country.
Captained both.
Captained and coached premierships, at the same time.
Team of century, NSW and AUS.

The thing is he should already be there, no debate for me, easy choice.

I think the thing is there was a reluctance to include another Saint from that era, particularly at that point in time. With the passing of time it might not seem to be as big an issue. Stands to reason that a side that had a Premiership run of that magnitude would be disproportionally represented.

Stuart owned Langer from 1990 - 1994. During that period Stuart won 4 origin series (more than Johns ever did at halfback), Langer won 1. Langer was dropped not once, but twice from the Kangaroos for Stuart (1990 anyone?). Langer was a great player for a long time but one eyed Queenslanders wax on like he was without peer. Johns was easily better than Langer and Stuart had the wood on him for a good 5 seasons.

The time thing is irrelevant, or should be. Bozo retired in 1979. He was named one of the original Immortals in 1981.

Good point about Langer being dumped for Stuart on both the 1990 and 1994 Kangaroo Tours.

Anyone who has seen a player better than Joey must have taken more drugs than Joey. Heather had about half his skills, and never took the line on nearly as much - hence his longer career.

I agree. Best player I have seen play is Johns. Daylight second.

And if you don't want to take my word on it you can ask my dad. He is 53 and says Johns is the best he has seen, with Lewis not too far behind. He says they were both freaks of football.

Is there an argument to just induct the whole team of the century (including the coach) into the 'Immortals'? I mean seriously, if you're considered in the best 17 over 100 years you should be an immortal. Then just add to that list every 5 or so years.

Good point bottle...

Still, as rolls royce as reg is, and as revolutionary as as Raper was, Norm lead the team before they came, Norm then did things as coach not captain.

I would bet Reg and John can't believe they are there before him.

Anyways....For Mine should have been an original....perhaps put 10.

Meninga is a low dog who shouldnt even be considered due to his recent attempts to undermine International League.
