Is there anyone on here who lives in Brisbane, isn’t a Broncos fan, and is going to become a full member? I haven’t seen much love for them on here yet.
I probably will. I was a Broncos member for a while although not a fan of them. I will probably support the Dolphins to help them get off the ground.

I don't have a single club I support, I have a soft spot for expansion and QLD clubs and that won't change. I'm not going to become a Dolphins only fan but I'll probably sign up.

big hit!

Irrelevant

Context is relevant. Why are Chelsea a global brand, but Fulham aren't? They are clubs named after neighbouring areas in West London. They both play in different stadiums in Fulham! Yet one is massive in London and around the world and the other is just a suburban London football club.

End of day, and we both agree, Redcliffe should remain the Dolphins name in NRL. Port Adelaide are the best example of it already having worked in Australian sport. They were a second tier club based in Alberton (Port Adelaide district), and play AFL games in a central venue in the city of Adelaide which will be no different to what Redcliffe will be doing in the NRL. Ultimately, no many people will care where they will train. They are playing in the centre of Brisbane so will appeal to all people who can access this venue. It is accepted though that the club will focus its initial target area as the Moreton Bay and Sunshine Coast regional areas. They shouldn't ignore the rest of Brisbane though.

Yes, for Port Adelaide it was predominantly Magpies supporters from the SANFL that followed them into the AFL, but 25 years down the track, they are now a choice for all of Adelaide and South Australia when it comes to a club for them to support. And they are. It would be no different for Redcliffe - they just need to be a competitive club and not a basket case.

I think we should have stuck with “Redcliffe” like Penrith etc.

We should de-corporate as far as possible, create a local identity.

Dolphins are found almost everywhere in the world. It’s just blah. It’s rude to our history.

It was a short sighted error of judgment that probably disenfranchised a number of locals.

We have to respect and honour the area. Those who have bled for the district.

How the game survives with so many uninspiring officials with 1980s thinking is beyond me.

No wonder the afl is killing us

I reckon I’d go something like “Redcliffe-Sunshine Coast” or “Redcliffe-Moreton Bay”. Brings in some of the wider district they’re looking for, and still allows Redcliffe to bring their name/history into it, which after winning the bid they deserve? And adds some meaning I think. Sure they’d mainly get called Redcliffe but that’s ok to me. Plenty of other examples of hyphenated names around that are now pretty entrenched names in the league landscape. Cronulla-Sutherland , StGeorge-Illawarra, Canterbury-Bankstown, Manly-Warringah.
That would be like changing the Broncos name to Red Hill-Brisbane Broncos.

I don't see the problem with Redcliffe or Moreton Bay Dolphins. That is where the club is based. No one is going to care because getting to Suncorp to watch Rugby League is the same distance whether you are travelling there to watch the Broncos or the Dolphins play.

This notion that people won't follow them that live in say Logan because they are based at Redcliffe is a bit weird. That logic works in Sydney because there are 9 clubs so support will gravitate to the local team. We only have two Broncs or Dolphins, if you are a RL fan in this city you have two choices and both play at the same world class stadium.

The Dolphins being based at Redcliffe won't affect their support any more than the Broncos being based at Red Hill. I'm not from Red Hill, nor do I or have I ever lived on Brisbane's northside or CBD but I held a Broncos membership for quite a few years (not even a fan, just wanted to watch RL). The whole 'they are based at Redcliffe so people outside of that immediate area will be put off' is being really overblown on here.
I'll support them. I hope they go with the name Moreton Bay Dolphins.

Same for Fremantle.

If the Dolphins entered the NRL as Redcliffe Dolphins it wouldn't make a difference provided that they are playing at Suncorp Stadium.

Well at the moment it’s “Southern Hemisphere Dolphins”

And I don’t see hundreds of thousands of people in Botswana or Chile picking up Dolphins merch.

The only people who could feel out of area are those living above the equator ( supporting the Miami Dolphins) and the odd bloody alien, who took a wrong turn at Jupiter and has ended up in earth orbit with a broken ion converter driveshaft calling the nrma road service.

Off-roading in the asteroid belt is a bad idea without a suitable vehicle.

We’ll yeah, I suppose, if Red Hill Rugby League club won the initial bid, and they were starting from scratch…. with another Brisbane team already in place. But they didn’t , and they weren’t, and there wasn’t, so, not exactly the same, no…

What I mean is Redcliffe is a suburb of Moreton Bay, just like Red Hill is a suburb or Brisbane.

Cronulla is a suburb of Sutherland. I've always thought they must be a bit backwards down in cockroach country to put their suburb and LGA in the name of their football and peptides team. It's a wonder they haven't called them the Cronulla Sutherland New South Wales Australia Southern Hemisphere Earth Sharks!

Fremantle weren't a promoted existing local club. And had the massive advantage that WC Eagles got to the point you couldnt buy a membership as every game sold out so if you wanted to go to a game it was Dockers or nothing.

Would a RL fan from say Logan or Manly - Wynnum support a club called Redcliffe?

Fair enough, good points on Fremantle.

I know it's just one case and it's anecdotal but I am a Wynnum Manly junior and I am happy to see a BRL club rise to the NRL. I think at NRL level the feeling in QLD is a little different than NSW we tend to get behind all of our sides (with the Broncos being somewhat of an exception because they are a little polarising).

Good point and in many ways that is how I'd be marketing the Dolphins, your BRL local club that's representing all the century of grassroots Brisbane development in the NRL. I think the Crushers were seen in same way?

I'm from Logan and support Wynnum Manly Seagulls. I'm going to buy a membership with The Dolphins.

To be honest, I was much younger when the crushers were around and didn't pay attention to things off the field like I do now, but I do believe they were owned (or part-owned) by the QRL so that could well be the case that they were viewed that way.

You are right about the marketing angle for the Dolphins to try and generate a groundswell of support.

The side is currently known as The Dolphins, however former Wallaby Lote Tuqiri suggests acknowledging Redcliffe’s Traditional Custodians.

The Fijian Rugby legend said the side should be called the Gubbi Gubbi Dolphins, and that it would be a massive step for the sport.

Radio Presenter Scott Sattler has praised the idea saying that it would be significant for the local area.

“I like it, it’d be the first national sporting organisation to do that,” Sattler said on SEN 1170 Drive.

“I’ve always believed from day one, dropping the ‘Redcliffe’ name was the right thing to do first and foremost, but they still should have some sort of location involved in the name.”

Their HQ was based out of Grange, in the heart of Pastoral Brothers Leprechauns territory. I think their Leagues Club is still based at Grange.
