Nevan - fair enough re the example you give, and I certainly won't be defending policeman to the hilt. As I said back in one of the first posts of this thread, there are idiots in every bunch. That applies to policemen too, as it does to lawyers, doctors, builders, and any other profession!

Anyway, relying on the eye-witness accounts for the time being won't get any of us far, because a number of the witnesses who have spoken to the media say that the deceased man was in fact tasered repeatedly .. everyone is confused and giving conflicting stories.

Ultimately, it's a very, very sad result coming out of what was a night of exhiliration and one which we have all waited a massive proportion of our lives for (for some, like me, 100% of our lives!). The deceased would have been 4 years old when St George won in 1979 ... so this was really the first Premiership victory he had ever seen too.

In the end, I'll keep on the straight and narrow: if the police tell you to leave, then you should leave, as there is nothing to be gained from opposing them.

Fair enough.

interesting night..

i posted the initial post in this thread on the way home from the club..

i was in the area where the fight was, but had left to go to the bathroom.

i was hit by the stench of the pepper spray when i was just about to go outside again, and had to pull back. i still had friends out there.. saw the poor guy on the ground with the police trying to get him to come round.

me & my mate decided to leave upon seeing the staff rush out with the mobile defribulator..

not a good way to finish the night..

it puts it all in perspective.. hope the guys family are ok..

Nevan,

An interesting article this afternoon on SMH:

http://www.smh.com.au/nsw/dragons-f...ity-around-like-rag-dolls-20101005-165pg.html

"Preliminary results of an autopsy carried out on a man who died after a confrontation with officers at St George Leagues Club indicate he did not die from physical injuries, police say.

Dragons fan Steven Bosevski, 35, was celebrating his side's NRL grand final win at the Kogarah club yesterday when a fight broke out, police say.

Security alerted police, who used Tasers, capsicum spray and batons to bring the situation under control.

Mr Bosevski's twin brother, Steve, yesterday described his brother as a "gentle giant".

But Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione today said Mr Bosevski was "throwing security around like rag dolls".

He rejected claims from Mr Bosevski's family that Mr Bosevski had been hit on the head, potentially causing his death.

Mr Scipione said the preliminary results from the autopsy showed that Mr Bosevski suffered "no physical injury that could have caused death".

All baton strikes were to Mr Bosevski's knees and legs, he said.

"Following a review of the footage, certainly I am confident that there were no strikes to the head," he said.

"From the preliminary post-mortem advice, which we have just received, it shows there has been no indication of brain injury, no fractures to the skull.

"Certainly there was bruising around the neck and the chest, which we have been advised by the coroner was consistent with CPR being performed."

Mr Scipione said police had been called in to eject "a group of people who were behaving aggressively".

"One officer, fearing that he was about to be assaulted, used his capsicum spray on that larger group," he said.

"At that point, the deceased man actually struck the police officer that was engaging him, to the face, and at the time, in his hand, he had a glass bottle."

The officer was believed to have been hit around his eye socket."

Like you Muzby except I went to the bar. I was close to the area and my mate was writhing with the taste of the spray in his mouth and eyes.

I'm just grateful I wasn't there. My best mate is a Maco and knows of the family which made it hit home just that bit more.

Don't really want to speculate on the events, but the attitudes of the riot squad cops afterwards was very confrontational.

Interested to know why they decided to close the pubs like The Royal, Mortdale etc early also. We as a society are over policed.

Also any words on the two security guards. They looked in an extremely bad way!

Then the police weren't overreacting at all.

I was clearly wrong.

Nevan - not a dig at you at all, just continuing on the conversation :)

I presume SaintTPP is talking about the deceased's father, who said on TV that there was blood coming out of his left ear (or dried blood, I guess) when he saw the body at the morgue.

Did you see this, SaintTPP?
I was upstairs in The Grange the whole time but went downstairs with some people to get some coffee from the TAB
area and I saw 2 Security Guards totally in blood and very hurt
in the reception area.

Basically long story short (I dont want to say anything coz I wasn't
there when it happened, I just was there when a tonne of people who said they witnessed it, were talking to each other and yelling things to the police), but I saw the deceased man being taken out while being resuscitated by an ambulance officer......he had blood all out of his ears and dripping down to his neck.

It's sad for him, his family, the police and their family. Obviously no one
ever wanted this to happen. The camera footage will show everything else
won't it?

It's curious that the police would make such a statement about an autopsy before it's completed and when the matter is clearly one for the coroner. Sound suss.

From a forum point of view, I think we should all shroud ourselves within the confines of the "alleged" blanket right now...

It's tragic that a Saints fan lost his life on the happiest day of our lives but speculation isn't doing anyone any good.

My thoughts go out to his family.

When oki finished everyone went to the club. That lack of planning caused the overflow. The ground should have had entertainment that went longer. Don't know who was organizing that, council or the club?

I was at morty and being a Sunday they had to close at 12. But the cops there were dreadful in dealing with the crowd. Cars were being pulled over for beeping their horns and I was shoved along the footpath for absolutley no reason when leaving.

Cops these days always seem to feel the need to assert their 'power', I didn't see a single violent incident in mortdale but they sure were going out of their way to create one!

Totally agree that there should have been more at the ground. We were surprised because we thought celebrations would have continued on after the players left but with nothing happening everyone obviously just headed for the club.

I actually thought the idea was to keep everyone at the ground to alleviate crowding at the club. If this was the case then further entertainment and more food/drink venues should have been a no brainer.

Actually I should have added that this is where having an auditorium like we had back in 1999 would have been helpful.

that decision to not go longer could have saved the event that claimed a life? Interesting. Wonder if thats the sort of stuff the coroner will look at?
