The most inventive way around the salary cap yet.

If only every player had a dad that clubs could legally write a big fat cheque to for safekeeping when the club is struggling to match their market value.

Cleary’s mr nice guy image has taken a massive hit over this saga and will need a very good spin doctor to repair even part of the damage.

If he was a so called supercoach with a long list of achievements the tarnished reputation would mean nothing but he showed this year at the Tigers with some terrible selection strategies that he is no supercoach.

As I said before, I pray for karma, the Cleary’s and the fat toad of Penrith....Gus Gould...crash and burn

In finals? I know your pain...I like the Tigers and I sure as shit don't wish Bennett on them. He didn't do much with a pretty decent Broncos squad and the advantages that club carries, dont see him achieving much with a bit less at Wests
I'm probably just clutching at hope. After Potter, Taylor and Cleary I just want a coach that's won premierships. Someone that knows how you do it.

I would prefer they went for a new age coach, But that is not going to happen, sponsors and fans get nervous. So I guess they will try and land the biggest fish they can hook. I guess at least a bloke like Bennett will not preach things like culture, on the bus etc and than white ant the club

This is all insane. One thing that doesn’t get talked about much is Penriths chaos and disorganisation. Not only coaching, but players that leave before their contracts are up. Moylan, Latu, Cartwright, Peachey, CHN, those are the ones off the top of my head. I’m not necessarily saying they’re bad moves or that they didn’t turn out well, but for a team with such an amazing talent base their unforeseen turnover is huge.

I find it insane that Ivan wouldn’t have just laughed and slammed the door in the face of Penrith once they came calling. Once bitten twice shy. He was supposedly tired according to Gus. He denied that. That to me is a massive slap in the face. Why trust this clown?

Then you have Ivan telling people he is on the bus. Including his players. It seems that isn’t correct. Some of those ex Warriors would have walked through fire for him. They must be bemused.

And to work with your son? I would never want to work with my old man. Love him to death but this a very boysy type macho environment. Dudes get on the drink, they’re around a lot of broads, and dads hanging around? No thanks. What if his form wanes? Can Ivan show the same decision making on his son as he would with others?

And then the NRL. We have rules in place to stop predatory poaching years in advance on players. But here we have a coach with 2 years to run signing elsewhere. So one of their clubs is either forced to let him go because it’s untenable which undoubtedly particularly the Ex Warriors boys will find frustrating, or they will have a coach who may deny it but must surely have his eye on his future club. Particularly watching the player market. Potentially even on the side having a say in the types of players Penrith pursues. Whilst being paid by the Tigers.

You shouldn’t be able to approach a rival coach this far out. Not without express permission of the current club. It’s dubiius at best, highly unethical at worst. It has opened an enormous Pandora’s box.

I feel for the Tigers players. They have every right to feel aggrieved and frankly that they’ve been lied to. I have gone from having the most outstanding admiration and respect for Ivan to feeling he has been party to a fairly disrespectful ruse of the Tigers.

This was always going to happen.

Phil Gould went in there trying to paint this hunky dory image of a stable club that grows from within and builds around its juniors. That meant 4 year contracts for every player under the sun and puff-piece articles quoting players never wanting to leave the culture.

I remember at one point looking at the list of players the Panthers had coming off contract over the next few years and it was significantly less than any other club because they'd basically locked up their whole squad to long-terms deals.

I'm sure it was all well-intentioned but unless they found pretty immediate success that was always going to end in tears.

If you are a player agent, would you now be forewarning players? Im assuming in most of these cases Penrith are paying good chunks of the salary cap of players on other clubs books.

I doubt that Ivan has a full appreciation for the corner he's painted himself into now...in interviews he will never again be able to use the words commitment..loyalty...honesty...there won't be an interviewer besides Guss's ch 9/ mmm/ ex panther bootlickers who will keep a straight face. He certainly will never be taken seriously again when he assures anyone of anything...won't be able to talk about what team values or passion mean to him as it will just ring hollow. He waited 2 weeks to tell the Tigers that he'd been talking to Guss's agents behind their back ...his and Guss's word means absolutely nothing anymore....you make your bed you sleep in it. Have a joyous romance fellas

As a warriors fan, I never thought Cleary was that great. We used to whinge about his selection methods but a lot of people saw him as the oracle because he got us to a GF.

Always thought he was a top bloke though until all this. Will be interesting to see how much of this was his directive.

As a Dragons fan I am glad that, amongst this whole coaching merry-go-round, we have our Top 8 coach secured for next year. God forbid any of these clubs start sniffing around Mary, I don’t know what I’d do!

I imagine that Raiders fans are feeling the same.

As a Warriors fan I am also totally happy with our proven top 8 coach, haha

Yeah, spot on. I agree with everything you wrote. The biggest villain in all this is IC. All his BS about commitment & rebuilding. He should have said a flat "No" when Panthers approached him and that would have been the end of it. He could have been at the Tigers long term, building us into a consistent top 8 side. And yeah, lots of potential trapdoors when coaching your kiddie.

Like who?

Sorry, not sure if your question here. Are you asking who might be turned away or players that have left prior to the end of their deals? If it’s the latter, CHN, Peachey (I think don’t hold me to that), Latu, Cartwright, Moylan, TMM. I know there were potentially other things at play that meant some of those players had to move on but it’s a fair list of talent.
