He is ordinary as an NRL fullback at the moment - the upside and the downside cancel each other out - he was signed as a marque player, and he's been overall ordinary...

If I was only considering the f**k ups I'd be saying he is awful

IIRC, fans here weren't going nuts over Inu's errors. In fact there was a schnid tin of head scratching as to why Ivan was continually leaving him out of the team.

Inu's a f**kwit, always has been, always will be..

Anyone just see Hayne's attempted tackle on Ryan Hinchcliffe in the lead up to Norrie's try? Yeah, Hinchcliffe......

But.. but... but all fullbacks make the last line of defence tackles, don't they??????

That Barba incident was a 2-1 overlap and he was always going to be beaten. If he slides to Benry then the pass is made and Johnson scores every day of the week.

I don't think thats the case. Its like being a football goal keeper. If there's two blokes on a break, you always rush up to the bloke who currently has the ball to cut down their time to increase the chances of a mistake under pressure. Barba should have been going for Benry, the only time he shouldn't be is if another defender is coming back in cover and can get Benry, and Barba can then slide off. It was poor defence, the imbalance on this forum is on one has brought that one up yet the fapping by one or two on the Barba miss from Tomkins is quite incredible frankly.

 please, let's not discuss Hayne in the same context as Tomkins...

Clearly opinion is divided on Tomkins, and the clangers we see every week are minor quibbles to others...

He's the fullback, and that's the way it is... hopefully Hoffman gets the same support from you chaps next year

Who's comparing Tomkins to Hayne? Really, where did that happen?

Again, either context has been missed or a laughter smiley is being used to dismiss a point.

Probably every other fullback in the comp makes that tackle... it's not a one off, and it's not getting used to the NRL or the Warriors

Yet one who would be included in "every other fullback in the comp" and is currently rated as the best had a "moment" where he got stepped by the lynx like agility of one Ryan Hinchcliffe.

When Hayne has messed up as much as Tomkins has this year, I guess you'll have point...

Suffice to say, we disagree on Tomkins, but this has become a waste of time

Hang on, if I'm not mistaken you were the one who said, and I quote,

Probably every other fullback in the comp makes that tackle...

Which clearly Hayne just proved they don't.

Hoffman I don't think is debatable frankly. The guy is a proven performer over a long period of time in the NRL and rep level. Seriously warming to his signing. Watching him a lot, the little 1%ers are exceptional.

Hayne played midweek, and I haven't seen the tackle...

But Tomkins SHOULD have made that tackle, he SHOULD have tidied up the grubber before Taylor scored in the Titans game, etc etc this list is rather long... he's repeatedly stuffing up things that should be bread and butter... Clearly others find these acceptable, I don't, and I don't buy the excuses - regardless of the money, this isn't different microscope, 1st grade fullbacks should not be making those sorts of mistakes most weeks... they re costing points, and if we are lucky enough to make the semis, they will cost us games

Agree on Hoffman..

What annoyed me more about Tomkins last night was the dropped ball from the half break. I've seen enough to know that this year he isn't gonna be a defensive powerhouse fullback but when he coughs up a very catchable ball it's just very frustrating. Thought he should have passed a couple more times last night as well. It's hard not to like him though cause he obviously puts in, puts his body on the line and plays with a lot of passion.

Agreed, I was disappointed that offload wasn't taken. It was great build up play from Mannering and Mateo and would have sealed the deal.

JJ, no argument on the Taylor play. That was very ordinary. The tackle though I'm reasonably comfortable with, because ALL fullbacks miss last ditch tackles from time to time.

Nobody finds it acceptable.

I really like Tomkins myself and every week I keep telling JoeD and Benek this is the week Tomkins is going to really shine and be the best player on the park, but I have to admit there is something not quite right. He trying to hard. He's trying so hard that at times natural things look labored.

That dropped offload is a classic example...it was after his mis on barba...you could just see he was still carrying that "embarrassment" and he wanted to make up for it.

If he could just chill out and not mind I think he would go alot better.

Any possibility he has not settled in to NZ?
If he is homesick or his mind is on other things?

His Dad has come out here.

Been here three weeks , coincides with Sams Worst games.

Might be trying too hard in front of dad.

I don't think he has settled either. You don't see him having much fun out there. Tomkins was a relaxed confident guy before joining the Warriors.

He was counting on playing a lot with TL.

It must be a massive culture shock here , the Warriors P.I. culture.

Personally I just think he is out of form , and well the fact is his speed hasn't come back....It's looking like it won't either.

Can't be very comfortable with the Locke situation , even though they get along ( in some ways that makes it tougher ).

Hi there
I've seen you make references to this speed issue in other threads. I dont recall that we had bought him in an injured state. Can you just update me on what happened back in the UK that caused him to lose his speed?

Tomkins explosive speed off the mark was gone by 2013 , all of last season his pace was pretty much over.

He's had Knee Injuries , Lower back problems and Hamstring injuries. At the World cup Tomkins was heavily strapped with Kenesio tape.

The Pom Physios had both knees taped , and tape from the Lumbar spine right up to his neck.

He got away with the loss of speed by adapting to taking more of a hand in playmaking.

His pace was very similar Benji Marhalls , quick off the mark....more importantly sudden direction changes without losing speed.

Even with the difference between defence in the NRL , Tomkins of old was a very hard player to tackle because of the footwork.

A number of Wigan fans believe he has returned to being a half again and might as well play there.
