I don't blame the AFL, if GWS or GC had the support and grass roots strength RL has in Perth they wouldn't be the basket cases they are. You cannot compare how succesful an NRL expansion team in Perth would be to either of the AFL expansion teams in areas no one wants them.
.

I'm not one to bang a drum about Aussie rules and I can't speak for GWS but the GC does have grassroots strength. Matter of fact the Southport Sharks are one, if not the the most recognizable QAFL team. They have always had strong support and juniors and at times comparable, if not surpassing to GC rl teams like Burleigh and Tweed Heads! I'd go as far as saying they're more supported then 80% of WARL's teams combined..

I don't think its a ninth timeslot that has no value...

They think there is no value with WC Pirates v Canberra Raiders for example..

I feel for you PR, the AFL has cost you another 5 years on the sidelines, with the crap they have dished up with GWS and GC...

The detail they didnt realise is that to have 2 competitive AFL teams you need 70 odd pretty good athletes...

To fill 2 more RL teams, we would need 50 good athletes and we have 100 in SL , and 10-20 toyotas, and 10 RU converts we could poach...

Look how quick GC Titans became competitive

Sorry THROW - you're missing the bigger picture here.
Two more teams means A MILLION less in the Salary Cap of each club.
That means more players are Franchises...less loyalty payments to the HINDYs of our world...fewer HINDYs - bigger player turnover between clubs which supporters loathe...thank Gallop for the past seven years of this.
Also, don't forget since the Titans came in...how many "wallys" nuffies & reggies have got a start in Firsts.
eg LOL @ 50uff$....Toolie Talanoa,Jaiman Lowe,Da'a'vid Fa'ark'psycho'longo.

It has been pretty laughable how silent the AFL media have been about our T.V Deal.

I watched the AFL Footy Show tonight out of curiousity, to see if they would try and rubbish it. Not a peep was said about it. Clearly, they've ignored the details of the deal, taken one look at the dollar value and realised it is nothing but bad news for the AFL, especially in regards to the viability of GWS and GC.

The fact of the matter is this: If the AFL were only providing half the funding they currently are to those two clubs, they would be on deaths door already. Both their crowd attendances and their T.V ratings are quite frankly embarrassing, and Channel 7 are inevitably going to crack the shits and have the same attitude as 9 does with the NRL and refuse to give them the best time slots if they don't drastically improve over the next year or so.

I know there is a lot that can be criticized about this new deal, but if there's one good thing we can take away from it, it is that it has shut the AFL up good and proper; and at some point, the AFL are going to have to realise that NSW and QLD will never be AFL strongholds, despite what their delusions of grandeur might suggest.

I will say though, that if the ARLC rules out expansion for the period of this deal, I will officially think of them as gutless penny pinchers who aren't interested in making our game bigger then it is. There should be at least 1 club introduced over the next 5 years, and it should be the Pirates.

If there's one thing that's come out of this deal it is that, without doubt, the last rights were way undersold.

I've got no doubt that without the News stooge & News' involvement in the game we would have reached at least $650 million over the 5 years.

The value of this latest deal has exposed Gallop big time.

Think of all the money rugby league has missed out on over the years.

Some people should never be forgiven.

Rubbish.

Southport Sharks have a big pokie palace clubhouse, but nobody gives a f**k about the team. Their crowds wouldn't get past 200.

The Pirates are perfect for the 6.30pm slot. I wouldn't be surprised if they were admitted at some stage during the 5 year tv deal.

Yep it's a pokie den, people go there to do their arses on the pokies not watch some unco stick figure run around in circles fumbling a Sharon.

One of the Fox guys said something about Sunday games allowing them to get rid of the red button. I think they know that the 9:30pm delayed game is never going to rate as well as a live game, let alone a live Sunday night game.

I think we'll eventually move to a schedule with zero overlapping games.

And I would applaud such a schedule.

The only reason I know about the southport sharks is that I used to cut through their carpark to get to the big day out.

Rubbish back @ you.

My girlfriend works for the Southport Sharks, they're genuinely well supported on the coast.

Well Gyngell pretty much said that he sees no value in a 9th game due to the afls 9th game...

So you kinda can blame them,,,

they are cagey pricks if it was all planned this way.. to keep RL in the east

Lol yep the big bad AFL had this planned from the beginning, waste millions of dollars on expansion teams to ensure the NRL don?t expand :?

The fact is the current rights holders have 0 interest in expansion and a 9th game which should be very worrying for the ARLC and they need to do their best to change this attitude.

So is it confirmed that 9 have to show the games at a decent hour on any of their channels into the non-heartland states for the entire duration of the contract?
