Can someone please explain this part of the Sharks official statement to me
"While this is in no way the outcome the Club planned for, there was no option but to grant a release to Holmes."
There was no option?
The club couldn't say "sorry son, you've signed, you play. Chase your next career after 2019" ?
If this was the case and he defied the order wouldn't the NRL, whom he is contracted to, step in?
It all comes across as weak as piss to me, by both player and club.
I don’t get the Gal hate for his comments.
He had every right to be pissed off.
People forget he is also a panelist on a footy tv show where he gets paid for his opinion not just on the Sharks but on the future of the game.
I think he is %100 right when he said blokes who break a contract to swap codes should be banned for X amount of years whatever.
f**k em.
The sharks busted their arse for Val.
Way and above what other players get afforded
( according to the sharkcast )
Yeah thanks for playing great for my team Val but you need to learn a thing or two about other stuff other than footy.
Poor form .
They didn't have to grant the release, but practically there's nothing they could do. They could sue Val for breach of contract, but the downside is way bigger than any upside. Can't stop him leaving the country to play for another code.
Didn't work with SBW when he walked out on the bulldogs.
And this is where Greenberg has to show some balls. By mid season next year Val will have an idea if he can make it.They didn't have to grant the release, but practically there's nothing they could do. They could sue Val for breach of contract, but the downside is way bigger than any upside. Can't stop him leaving the country to play for another code.
Didn't work with SBW when he walked out on the bulldogs.
f**k him, sign Barba or someone else, holmes aint ever coming back here.If Sharks dont have a registered contract by june 30, Holmes can play anywhere.
If Sharks cant pay him & remain under the cap(say we get johnson) he can play anywhere.
Holmes has already signed(letter of intent from both) for N.Qld for 2020.
Holmes always was, always will be a self serving merkin , playing a team sport.
You never win against the Orrs.
I always said that I prefer his father Johnny anyway. Dad has a big one but Jnr is a big one.
Holmes is not coming back (to aus) in 2019.
I dont know how many times you f**kers need to be told.
The NFL season doesnt start til the latter half of the year.
Hes going to be spending nearly a year training.
Val does as he is told by that woman.Unless he gets there and his missus can’t handle it.
Val asks for release, Cronulla immediately grant it.
Klemmer asks for release, Bulldogs say no until they find a replacement.
Widdop asks for a release, Dragons expected to say no.
Johnson asks for a release, Warriors say no.
Last thing you want is a media circus surrounding your Club every week.
That shyte kills any chance of success for a Club.
Valentine Holmes’ departure from the Sharks has been painted as relatively rosy by some, but it was anything but.
The Sharks are increasingly convinced American football has been Holmes’ plan for a while. And in that time the likes of Jesse Ramien (Newcastle) and Ricky Leutele (Toronto Wolfpack) have left the club. That has annoyed the playing group, but that may not be the main issue.
The Sharks were left with no option when it came to Holmes. A club official told me that from the moment Holmes was in the US testing himself in front of scouts, he knew he wanted to have a crack at the NFL. Holmes’ management approached the Sharks and said he was quitting. If the club had said no, Holmes was going to sit out the season. No discussion were necessary.
It took the club by surprise as they had thrown the biggest offer at Holmes that they had ever made to a player. The club was insulted and disappointed to say the least.
The Sharks approached the NRL about the issue and were basically told they could challenge it, but it would be a legal fight. The club wasn’t prepared for that.
The Sharks also gave Holmes a $100,000 payment as an incentive to sign on long-term. That gave the club confidence he could stay.
They asked for that payment to be returned pronto when Holmes announced he was leaving. It was.
The Sharks also asked that Holmes’ partner leave her job at the club, but she left on good terms. She attended the Sharks’ Christmas party.
If Cronulla appear weak for not challenging Holmes it is because they knew of his conviction to leave and didn’t want a legal battle. Instead they took the long-term approach. Holmes has to return to the club if he flops during the period covered by his previous Sharks contract. The problem for the club will be fitting him under their cap as they have signed Shaun Johnson.
They also have an undertaking that Holmes will promote the Sharks brand during his US journey. Be sure Holmes will have a lot of ground to make up with the playing group if he ever did return.
