Ah I'm glad you brought the NFL up, because I was going to use them as an example. Imagine the NFL going to the Maryland govt and saying "we couldn't find anyone to buy the Commanders, pretty please can you fund them". It'd be the most embarrassing moment in US sporting history.

Oh and no, they don't rely on funding for stadia. They get it because they know they can. The billionaires who own the teams could fund them on their own, but why would you bother when you can just threaten to relocate the team, and no city wants to lose such a significant portion of their economy.
