In any event, the West Coast (AFL) won't allow another professional football team in Perth to copy their name. If Cronulla can stop Gold Coast (Suns) 1000km away, using the Sharks nickname, then West Coast will stop a direct competitor in the same market using their name. It won't be West Coast. And nor should it.
Yeah, I don't think you can put a copyright on a cardinal direction or a geographic location or region. It would cause all sorts of mayhem. Now, if the NRL; hypothetically, were to move Manly to WA, then the WCE would have a cause to put all sorts of injunctions on the use of West Coast in association with the Eagle or Sea Eagle brand because it is too close to their branding.

Monikers are a different story as they are an identity. Cronulla stopped the GC use of the sharks because the Southport Sharks (GC AFL club) have similar colours to the Cronulla sharks (Black and white, just no sky blue. Unlikely they would be able to use B & W because of collingwood).

The GC RL bid in 2007 sought permission from the Miami Dolphins to use the dolphin moniker but neglected to seek permission from the Redcliffe Dolphins. As Redcliffe had ambitions to join the NRL they put in injunctions to stop the GC bid being named "GC Dolphins"; hence they had to rapidly change the bid name to the Titans.... and the rest is history.

"Initially the team was to be named the Gold Coast Dolphins, with the team colours to be white, jade and orange. While the Dolphins moniker was popular among many, the heavyweight Brisbane Queensland Cup side the Redcliffe Dolphins saw it as a threat for any prospect of entering the NRL they had, and as a result threatened severe legal action if the Gold Coast used the Dolphins name."

Maybe they can incorporate the shape of the state of Western Australia on that west side of the face too... i mean its a great logo, probably needs a more open mouth tho

Edit::: I did some work it, added the WA coastline, changed the colors, and name, and gave the bear some front teeth

The Coastline idea is a good one, but that red background is too full on IMO.

A neutral white background with Red & black border, yellow on the bear is enough for me. Too much red & yellow just kinda makes the whole thing look bright orange.

OR

Ditch the shield altogether.

Why? There's heaps of bear there, heavy amount of colors of red and black, got a W and a N.... home is Perth, so WA coastline is evident, nothing to bitch about really... besides beggars cant be choosers...
You think tigers fans whine about that magpie on their shoulder.... nope
you should have heard them go off about the WC bear one I did and that was predominantly red and black lol

Also controversial opinion, location based colour schemes are not necessary at all. Don’t see a great need for any yellow, add some to an alternate or heritage kit maybe plus some training gear.

Likewise any Christchurch team needing to be red & black, the same colours as their main competition. Go with something different.

I think a lot of that depends on the ownership and relationship tbh. Swans didnt change brand colours but they moved lock stock and barrel to Sydney. This is probably going to be a bit different as NS will want some continued ownership element. Thats why a brand tweak to make it uniquely WA,. not just NS transplanted may be necessary.

For that to work needs the sort of success Storm had. Which is impossible

It would be ridiculous to have three professional football clubs in Perth, and none of them called Perth. Don't copy the AFL, West Coast is already a club. Perth Bears is an opportunity. Another West Coast will just get lost in AFL mad Perth. It must be Perth Bears.

I vote for "The' as their name
Was about to say I don’t really care what they go with as long as it isn’t the stupidity of THE lol. Being called wa, western, perth or West Coast won’t make or break the club.

if WA govt is backing them they’ll see it as a vehicle for boosting tourism so may be keen to see it named WA or West Coast for state wide tourism opportunities.

WA's greatest asset is the beautiful beaches along its coastline. A name like West Coast Pirates can appeal to local resorts looking for more customers from NSW and Queensland.
