Warriors play hardball with Shaun Johnson

Nah f**k it, the Warriors haven't created a mess. This is a professional sport, and these are the realities of a sports-based business. If SJ wants to sook about it, then we'll be doing ourselves a service by driving him away. If he truly wants a Warriors premiership, like he keeps telling us, he'll use it as motivation to get better, have a big 2019 and place the club in a position where they want to re-sign him.

Cameron George isn't saying Shaun is shit, he's saying everyone is expendable and when one guy is on $1m a year, certainly he's as expendable as anyone if he isn't producing performances that match the tag. The only argument I can see here is that George has made it public, but the way player managers operate it would've been leaked that he's been told he can go and look at other offers anyway. So the Warriors are controlling the narrative. They've told him he can go and look at other offers because we're not going to just sign him up again on the spot. And why should we?

And the timing is unavoidable. From Thursday, clubs are open to negotiate with him. So we're not going to re-sign him by then, and therefore we're only being reasonable by telling him that's the case and he has the right to start talking to other clubs. Will it create a circus in 2019? Yes, it probably will. But that's the nature of our game and again, if Shaun uses that as an excuse to underperform or play distracted all year, we're doing ourselves a service by letting go of him. If his ego can't cop this week's statement from the CEO and it can't handle the professional realities of this job, then as I keep saying....see ya.

We'll learn all we need to know about Shaun Johnson in the next 12 months, I reckon. And I think this will be his last year in Warriors colours. I've been a sycophant of his for so long but it's come to the point where I think both parties are best to part ways.

I'm torn.
Im a massive fan of SJ and as most have said, on his day he's amazing to watch.
Yes, he's over paid considering what he's done for us so far.
However, NZ typically pay overs for big name players anyways, so even if we got a Norman, Brooks or Moses we'd still be paying close to a million for them anyways, and imo SJ offers more than they do, has history with the club, and has those player relationships.

I'd only go for it if we got real value out of it. No point doing something like this unless we have something great lined up

Remember, we've maybe only got 1 more year with Luke left. Can we afford to lose both SJ and Luke in the same year? We'd have to have some huge contingency plans if so

He told you he is leaving.

Has no need to explain, will or will not happen.

Manu does not make claims often, hope he is right.

If you cannot afford two, one million dollar halves, better find a new one, someone else will snap him up, you blokes do not deserve his genius reading this thread.

Has forwards, can beat Australia, dead set, take 5 Sharks and throw him to us.

The last point is the really salient one - he needs a dominant pack - however the salary caps make it difficult to have a dominant pack and a million dollar half - unless you're the Roosters (although I doubted their pack) or the Dragons (and like Johnson there are questions around whether their #7 is worth it)

Likely we've paid overs for several in our pack, and IMO Tohu Harris is the only truly elite forward we have - presumably we're paying elite $$ for chumps like Blair... adding Ah Mau is a good step, but think we need more power through the middle

Be interesting to see how Johnson would go at the Sharks - again he doesn't seem to want to let someone like Townsend run the game, and he and Moylan would be exciting I guess - but could be a clusterf**k

Will all depend how keen the soon to be wife is on moving to Australia.
She could probably pick up a contract in an Oz team and NZ Netball have marched back their only play in NZ rules for Langman so it may not kill of her Silver Ferns aspirations.

It's easy for those of us who operate from the sidelines to bang on about how the most brilliant footballer this city has produced for many years turned into a club killer.
Is he? Bromwich, to take one example, is from Auckland and I'd argue he's more brilliant than Johnson - he just plays a different role.

I hope he stays
I cannot imagine him playing for anyone else. He bleeds New Zealand.
Really do, but kind of don't.

Rather see him given the chance to bring it home to NZ.

But also kind want to see, have a crack else elsewhere.

Truly torn.

Wish Stacey could play with him. Damn you all.

If he goes I want to see him go somewhere with a really good setup and kill it.
Agree.
Roosters highly likely in 2020 if Copper retires.
Cowboys have some cash with JT gone.
Broncos always looking for a half.
But Melbourne under Bellamy would be amazing. But I think Munsta probably has the cash tied up there.

Well, he's now nominated for the Golden Boot award....doesnt really help our side with bargaining.

Quite surprised really, I don't even think he was our second best player at the Warriors this year

Shaun Johnson's just a one trick pony, says former Olympic coach

Warriors coach Stephen Kearney has decided star halfback Shaun Johnson is surplus to needs – and it seems the majority of New Zealand fans agree.

A poll conducted by Kiwi website Stuff.co.nz has found a resounding 68 per cent of supporters back Kearney’s decision to allow the erratic No.7 to explore his options beyond 2019.

That stunning result comes off the back of a former top Olympic coach accusing Johnson of lacking toughness and heart.

Media commentator Mark Watson, an ex-professional sportsman who has trained Olympic-class athletes, was scathing in his assessment.

“Unfortunately for Shaun Johnson he does not fall into the category of a great but more into the category of a flawed genius,” Watson wrote on Stuff.

“While he is a brilliant stepper off both feet, he is regrettably a one trick pony. He is not a natural tactician and he is no more than a speed bump in defence.

“But the real missing ingredient in his game is he appears to lack heart and is not tough enough.”

It appears Kearney has tired of Johnson’s hot and cold performances and does not believe the 28-year-old can take the Warriors to the next level.

He has just one season to prove the coach wrong – that’s unless the Warriors are willing to offload him ahead of the 2019 campaign.

He's become reasonable defensively - that's the irony, he's aggressive and physical on defence, but wont be on attack

Tactically he's not great, time to move on from the Johns comparisons, and embrace his inner Brett Kenny - but that entails running to and through a set line, not just one that's back peddling... FMD Moylan does it

Ata must be fuming  poor bloke.

In reality, I think it comes down to what SJ wants to do. No doubt we will offer him a decent contract and I'm more than happy for him to stay here, but will he go for the bigger money else where? I can't see his chances of winning a premiership going up in Canberra...

I think we need to stop looking at him and saying 'but he's not as good JT or Cronk'. They're 2 of the best halves in the last 20 years... unfortunately SJ is not in the category, but more in the category below.
