One thing that struck me and should strike most league fans, is how many people attended the game. It was like a Grand Final. I think the crowd was 68,000. Much better attended even than the crowds at the world's best attended rugby league club, the Brisbane Broncos.

Although one should note that NFL clubs are all at least one city clubs, or represent an area bigger than one city (e.g. New England Patriots, Carolina Panthers) and that the San Francisco Bay area is two or three times the size of the Brisbane metropolitan area.

Still, even the world's most successful rugby league competition has paltry weekly attendances compared to those of the NFL.

And it was awesome seeing Hayne play He will be regretting that first fumble but it showed alot of character to pick himself up and have a semi decent game. Hopefully he gets more chances.

Unfortunately Jarryd Hayne's plane goes quiet until next game day, which is Sunday US time. He won't get much publicity, outside of the 49ers forums, until he plays again and can deliver a couple of big plays.

A lot will depends on whether Reggie Bush's calf injury heals and enables him to play against the Pittsburgh Steelers. If Bush does not play, then the question is whether the coach will then use Jarryd as the 2nd running back, or use Mike Davis instead, and whether the coach will give Jarryd a role as kick/punt returner again.

Right now though the 49ers website forum has an official Hayne Plane thread, which is at least 50% dominated by Australians with a few Kiwis, most of whom are new converts to the NFL game.

The fact that there is a "pinned" HaynePlane thread shows that there is a fan interest in Jarryd Hayne, and that the 49ers want to support that.

if rigidly just using the state or city boundaries of New York, then yes only the Bills play within the state of New York. No NFL teams are based in New York City.

But New York is also generally defined locally in its statistical sense as Greater New York or the New York metropolitan area. This includes the 5 boroughs of New York City, plus Long Island beyond Queens and Brooklyn (which is the Jets traditional fan base), the surrounding government areas of New Jersey just across the Hudson (where both the Giants and Jets are based), as well as several counties north in Connecticut.

It's not unlike the 49ers now they are based in Santa Clara. It's not San Francisco, but it is classified within the metropolitan region of the San Francisco Bay Area which encompasses San Francisco County all the way down to San Jose (via Santa Clara), north over the Golden Gate into Marin and Napa Counties, and the East Bay encompassing Oakland and surrounding areas.

I think it is fair to say that San Francisco 49ers club represents many parts of northern California, but of course it has competition from the Oakland Raiders which sits just across the bay. What a pity there is no Los Angeles team. The San Diego Chargers will not substitute for an LA team. But 3 California teams out of 32 NFL franchises means that California is only slightly underrepresented in terms of the state's proportion of the US population.
