What if Jarryd Hayne doesn't make the 49ers cut? Will he return to the NRL?

I think it is fair to say that San Francisco 49ers club represents many parts of northern California, but of course it has competition from the Oakland Raiders which sits just across the bay. What a pity there is no Los Angeles team. The San Diego Chargers will not substitute for an LA team. But 3 California teams out of 32 NFL franchises means that California is only slightly underrepresented in terms of the state's proportion of the US population.

True, the niners are very much the NorCal franchise, both North and South of San Francisco county. Oakland are more the franchise of the East Bay counties. Their stint in LA hurt their population base in the Bay Area.

Still, my point stands. San Francisco 49ers are an hour drive down hwy101 from the city of San Francisco, and are closer to San Jose than San Francisco. As in the case of the New York franchises, the key is the metropolitan area.

And the Rams and Chargers (and possibly Raiders) to LA saga is contingent on their incumbent cities stumping up for new stadiums. I've been to the coliseum in Oakland and it's definitely past its use by date - both as a multinpurpose venue and the amount of revenue that can be generated from it. It's no surprise that the Raiders are the least valuable franchise in the NFL.

Jarryd Hayne has tremendous self belief. He will return and eventually achieve greatness in the NFL.

We need a little perspective. Devin Hester, who is the NFL's greatest kick/punt returner of all time, has dropped quite a few kicks/punts in his ten year career. And that is despite the fact that he started playing the game when he was young, and was a huge college football success before he became an NFL player. Yet Hester's greatness as a runner of the ball always overrode that occasional handling lapse.

Jarryd Hayne did not have Hester's great apprenticeship. Intelligent people, including the 49ers coach, know that and will put it into the frame of their evaluation of Jarryd's fumble and his performance in general.

Go home Hester you're drunk

Raiders fans sure do one hell of a tailgate though, something I was very lucky to be right in the thick of last Sunday. Shame about the game though.

Many folks put down Yank culture and sports traditions, etc.....but the tailgate is phenomenal.

I don't know, all that atmosphere seems to me to be a result of competitive fanaticism rather than true interest in the game.

I don't know if anyone else gets this - and it might just be because I'm a casual observer - but American sports broadcasts often seem somewhat detached... almost like the result doesn't matter or the game isn't that important. I never get that feeling watching NRL.

Just reported that wide receiver and kick/punt returner Bruce Ellington is in doubt for tomorrow's game. Given the fact that running back and kick/punt returner Reggie Bush is also out, there are few options for kick and punt returner, other than Jarryd Hayne.

This puts enormous responsibility on the shoulders of former NRL star Jarryd Hayne in Sunday's game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Do we get to see his games in Australia, I'm willing to drop a brick on a toe to immobilise enough to sit through a game if he plays

Thanks ol' mate, I've set it on record so after a 2 hour start I can sift through the bullshit, should be able to manage half an hour without losing interest

No that game was awesome, a great performance by Tyler Eifert. I would have loved to have been at that game. The only NFL game I've been to was the season opener between the Bengals and Browns in 2011. Kept getting asked why I wouldn't go see the bigger teams play.

If the 49ers win against the Steelers, and if Jarryd Hayne plays well in that game, then the US media is going to start zooming in on Jarryd. That will be nice if it happens. Parramatta Eels and the NRL have already received loads of free publicity from Jarryd's presence in the NFL. They should exploit it.

Exactly. Even bigger thing to do would be to sign up some NFL players that miss the cut and now have nowhere to go. Start up some kind of RL training school to attend here in Australia.
Time to not just look at getting fans of the game in the USA, but get some of these awesome athletes that miss out to try out a game reasonably similar to their own.

If an American can play AFL, one can play RL surely.

You are right. NFL has much more in common with rugby league than with AFL, because NFL and rugby league have so many common skills sets.

I cannot get the TV telecast where I am. Can anyone fill us in on how Jarryd is going (apart from taking his first punt catch successfully)?
