I thought Terminator Salvation was okay as an action movie, the writing was poor though.

I thought the actors did a good job with the sub-par screenplay.

Bale was fine. I doubt he was in cruise control, he's a method actor, you could even notice him talking and acting similar to John Connor in interviews for The Dark Knight because he was in the middle of filming TS.

The writing was the problem with that character (and the other characters, but to a lesser extent). John Connor wasn't even a leading role in the original screenplay; Bale was originally asked to play Marcus (which is why Marcus gets as much if not more screentime than JC). They were doing re-writes on set to get him into more scenes and it shows, the character has no depth.

I don't think he's really put much effort into his latest films. "The Dark Knight" and "Terminator Salvation" are nothing compared to "The Machinist" or "The Prestige" imo.

That said, he's a great actor.

And I agree - Connor had no depth.

The film, to me, just felt rushed and 'convenient' - the way it concludes made me utter, "Oh, how convenient!" Little effort was put into writing a unique story imo.

.

I disagree, I think the characters are simply written that way. For example, in The Dark Knight Bruce Wayne is supposed to be physically and emotionally drained from living a dual life; Bale acts that way and gets bagged for looking tired and disinterested. I can't see how he could do anything differently than he did in those movies without rewriting the screenplays.

It was the same thing with 3.10 to Yuma and you will see it with Public Enemies too, Bale is playing a reserved guy and Depp is playing the extroverted Dillinger. Bale will probably get bagged again for being boring despite the fact that he is playing the role exactly as it's written.

Have you seen Rescue Dawn or I'm Not there? He plays more colourful characters in those recent movies.

I didn't mean he was boring. I meant that his character was weak and had no dimensions (which isn't his fault) and thus his portrayal of John Connor only showcased a very limited part of his acting repertoire.

But then I must be the only person on the planet atm who didn't enjoy "The Dark Knight" save for Heath Ledger's awesome performance and Aaron Eckhart's great job (he usually puts on a great job anyway), so it's probably not a fair indicator for me.

I agree with that, I think he is underutilized in both The Dark Knight (and Batman Begins) and Terminator Salvation.

I would love for him to do another dark comedy (or any type of smart comedy), he showed he can be great at comedy in American Psycho.

He's a fine actor - how he easily changes from loving family man to obssessed, upstaging psycho in "The Prestige" and yet still retains a degree of charm truly speaks volumes about his talent.

I never saw the film, but I read the book and thought it was woeful lol.

You should check it out (if you are referring to American Psycho) it's his best performance by far IMO.

I read the book too, I liked it but it was a bit long winded and it was a chore to finish it, the movie was certainly more enjoyable for me.

The type of humour isn't for everyone though (I hated it the first time I saw it, then I watched it 5 years later and it's one of my favourites).

T4 was enjoyable. Mindless, telegraphed and more than a little dumb, but still a good way to spend a couple of hours. Sam Worthington was awesome, Moon Bloodgood is hawt and the machines were so very, very cool.

Better than "The Machinist"?

Watched "The Promotion" yesterday. Not bad. Lots of subtle humour in there.

Also saw "The Day the Earth Stood Still". Not as bad as I was expecting but not as good as the original (even with the original's crappy 1950s special effects).

day the earth stood still - worst acting of all time. really really bad

terminator 4 - someone said earlier on that it added little/nothing to the series. i have to agree. sure there were some good action scenes and it focused more on the humans v machines fighting, but what really changed from the start of the movie to the end? the humans were still battling machines etc....without ruining it i dont see how it changed apart from a lame attempt to insert a new angle into it. i think they are running out of ideas
