What Movies Have You Seen III

I watched A Simple Favour the other day as the time slot suited.

It was watchable. The missus will probably like it more. A highly unlikely and sometimes “eye-rolling” story with some eye-candy.

2/5 spuds.

Watched Ant-Man and the Wasp on the small screen...

My opinion of it hasn’t changed too much... it’s okay... good change of tone after IW.

I gotta hand it to Marvel though... they have the formula down to a fine art...

I watched it with a bunch of people who don’t really care for comic books films.. but like everyone else on earth they watched IW so they were all drawn in to watch this one because they thought they may get some clues for Avengers 4...

After watching this they were all raving about how it was the best Superhero film they had seen in years... so cheerful and fun...

SMH....

Marvel just sprinkle that crack cocaine over there and the general audience just love that shit...

Finally watched it on Wednesday night whilst in hospital. Like you say it's ok but I still enjoyed it.

Love Michael Peña's character though.

Lost city of Z. I thought this was a cheap Indiana Jones knock off for some reason, very different to what I expected, based on a true story. This goes to places I was not expecting. Not great, it’s a slow mover (doesn’t help I though it was a dumb action movie) but worth a view. 7.5/10

Thor Ragnarok 8/10 - Despite pulling every Marvel cliche, this is one of the most entertaining romps of the series and easily the best Thor film. There's nothing new going on here, you've got your charismatic and slightly douchey hero thrust into adversity, banding together an unlikely group and preventing the planet from being blown up from an evil throwaway villain - with a few cameos in the mix.

Yet here (and unlike GOTG imo), everything clicks nicely in terms of pace and tone, the jokes land and the action set pieces are terrific. Nice to see someone other than Hiddleston in this group having the time of their lives; as someone mentioned above Marvel have cracked the formula and this is a prime example of successfully playing it to the book.

The Incredible Burt Wonderstone 6/10 - This should have been great; Steve Carrell, Steve Buscemi, Alan Arkin and (amazingly) Jim Carrey cast in an unapologetically stupid parody on rival magicians. But unlike Telladega Nights and Death to Smoochy, it's too safe and never goes all in. Sure it's got it's moments (the best joke is in the trailer) but it's always short of top gear and is too content to coast along and sit on it's cliched protagonist self-redemption arc. All the actors commit, too bad it didn't have a seasoned dark comedy director to pull it off.

The Book of Eli 8/10 - Much better than expected. Gets extra points for some terrific visuals, presenting a dark dog-eat-dog world and it's haunting background score, bettering most post-apocalyptic action-dramas out there. Denzel as always carries it effortlessly and did his own stunts apparently, and it's nice to see Gary Oldman ham it up a bit once again. The plot is something a bit different, not a bad pay-off but certainly could've been better, plus Mila Kunis shouldn't have been anywhere near this. Worth a look.

The Day After Tomorrow 6/10 - Your typical big disaster movie shambles complete with loads of stupid physics, but doesn't present an interesting enough catastrophe (Independence Day) or deliver enough cheap thrills (Twister) to be particularly memorable. Effects are very good and the cast performs just fine, an easy movie to watch and forget.

Venom. Pretty much what I was expecting. Not much good apart from the action and Eddy/Venom relationship. 6.5/10

First man. Slow moving but interesting. The flight scenes and final 30mins are amazing. 8.5/10

Bad Times at the El Royale.

I went in cold, just knowing it was the kind of quirky movie I enjoy and it kept me on my toes for the full two hours or so.

7.5/10.

Going back through some oldies:

Shaft - decent remake, Bale plays a prick real well, maybe too well

Ford Fairlane - showing its age but I lol'd

The Fan - De Niro is really unsettling, especially with the ex- wife & son stuff. A little hard to watch as far as Snipes is concerned as it has recently become common knowledge that he is a pretty ordinary baseball player.

Searching - Didn't have high expectations but ended up being quite a good watch. Had to adjust to watching John Cho (Harold and Kumar) in a serious role but he was decent in this. The whole concept is a man searching for his missing daughter but the whole thing is shot through computer screens. Worked a lot better than I thought it would, as long as you believe people use Facetime a lot more that they do.

The best movie of 2018 thus far.

Had a real David Fincher vibe to it through out and everything plays out smoothly. I thought the director did a wonderful job of playing on audience's expectations and the pay-off is incredibly satisfying.

Three Identical Strangers. Quite a good documentary, bit slow at the start but ends very different place than expected from the first third.
