The Man from U.N.C.L.E. 6/10 - Starts off in style but quickly meanders nowhere and ends up being a popcorn flick you've already seen before. Distractingly bad accents don't help either, even though the acting is fine.

Swimming with Sharks 7/10 - Dark drama with Kevin Spacey nailing it as the boss from hell.

Apocalypse Now 8/10 - Deeply haunting war epic, shot so brilliantly you could hardly tell it's from the seventies. Close to the best Nam movie there is.

The Zero Theorem 3/10 - WTF was this, Terry Gilliam gone nuts and that's saying plenty.

Gangster Squad 6/10 - LA Confidential Lite, a collection of very slick gangster scenes and nothing more. The brilliant cast is wasted and Sean Penn in full ham mode doesn't help at all.

Knock Knock 5/10 - Weird trashy horror which has the balls to present some dark ideas but absolutely zero depth to make it work. Poor Keanu Reeves commits but is left hung out to dry.

Mystic River 8/10 - Sombre character and performance driven tragedy, Sean Penn and Tim Robbins are ridiculously good in this.

8mm 8/10 - Vastly underrated thriller featuring a non-lunatic Nicolas Cage trying to make sense of the dark ignored world of pornography

American Hustle 7/10 - Such a waste. Fantastic build up and performances flushed away with a surprisingly dry climax.

The Gift 7/10 - Joel Edgarton pet project, very interesting psychological thriller which avoids all the cliches. Jason Bateman shows off some real acting talent in a straight role.

Old Boy (American) 6/10 - Doesn't hold a candle to the original, similarly borrowing and removing all the wrong things from the Korean classic. Josh Brolin and Elizabeth Olsen really deliver, but are counter balanced by the dreadful Sharlto Copley and an annoying Samuel L Jackson.

Safe House 6/10 - Somehow manages to suck all the life out of Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds, both moping about in a tired and uninspired action thriller.

State of Play 7/10 - Murder mystery which is a little bit by the numbers but has enough juice to make it worth a watch. Russell Crowe anchoring the piece and loads of quality support acting help it a lot.

Pirates of Silicon Valley 8/10 - The definitive Apple / Microsoft showdown movie, with a little known cast delivering incredible performances.

Steve Jobs (Fassbender one) 7/10 - It's just a collection of random snippets about Jobs himself and what an arrogant prick he is. Fassbender's great performance holds it up, making Kutcher look hopeless.

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back 6/10 - Rare miss for Tom Cruise, in a moderately entertaining but completely pointless sequel.

The Last King of Scotland 8/10 - Brilliantly acted drama/thriller, the scariest thing about the portrayal of Idi Amin is the seemingly child like innocence masking the brutally insane interior. Sucks you right in and never lets go.

There Will Be Blood 6/10 - Weird movie that plods along, full marks to the cinematography and Daniel Day Lewis but blank third act doesn't keep it engaging.

I thought Keanu sucked in Knock Knock.

I thought he was comically bad, tbh.

Oh he was terrible, don't get me wrong. He was completely miscast for the role and written terribly, what I meant was he turned up and tried to deliver and this actually made everything worse.

Ah, gotcha.

I do agree - he tried really hard, but he just seemed incapable.

It's a shame, because I genuinely like Keanu as a bloke.

But he can hardly act.

I don't completely agree that he can't act. He's a limited actor for sure, but he's capable of good subtle performances if the plot and character carry him. I think he did a fine job in Speed, John Wick, The Devils Advocate and of course The Matrix (first one only), plus he found some interesting range playing against type in The Gift & The Watcher.

But if you leave all it up to him such this movie, Constantine etc. he just doesn't have the game to carry it all on his shoulders.

John Wick is one of my favourite films, but I don't think he was particularly good in it, tbh.

I really like the guy, but he hardly ever seems natural or comfortable to me.

He has some wooden acting for sure.
That being said, I randomly bumped into him in Sydney once. He was promoting his latest film at the time (Street Kings) and stopped at a bottleshop in Lane Cove for a coke and a ciggarette. Said G'day and said I was a big fan, he smiled and was friendly when he didnt really need to be (for some reason he had about 3 body guards with him).
After that I generally watch most of his films haha.

I genuinely like the man - I've heard that he's a sincerely good bloke.

Your story affirms that.

I enjoy watching his films, but he can range from watchable to cringe-worthy.

But I still enjoy his body of work, and the fact he's a really good man makes it easier, too!

Self/Less 6/10 - A loose, under cooked rehash of Face/Off minus all the entertainment. Reynolds and Kingsley try but there's just nothing there.

I Origins 7/10 - Very nice little sci-fi flick presenting some interesting ideas (albeit far fetched) about the unique identity of the human eye.

Coherence 6/10 - Strange one about a group of friends confronted suddenly with parallel versions of themselves. Odd but intriguing, payoff could have been better.

Exam 7/10 - Great minimalist mind drama about a group of strangers caught in a bizarre test for a job position. Worth a look.

The Place Beyond the Pines 8/10 - Patient, slow burning character study with three clear acts separated by time with neat overlaps in plot holding it together. Golsing, Bradley Cooper and the underrated Dane DeHaan are all excellent.

Judgement Night 6/10 - Interesting little early 90s action thriller featuring a typically crazed Denis Leary looking to gun down an odd grouping of Emilio Estevez, Cuba Gooding Jnr, Jeremy Piven & Stephen Dorff, a bunch of guys just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Gets spoiled by an oddly lame finale but good way to waste a bit of time.

Concussion 7/10 - If you can ignore Will Smith's stupid accent and mugged up oscar-bait performance, it's an interesting and very relevant drama (to us NRL fans too) around head knocks in professional sports.

Masterminds - Zach Galifinachis, Owen Wilson, Kirsten Wigg, Kate Mckinon - Brilliant! 8/10

Arrival - Finish almost made it worthwhile. 6.5/10

Jason Bourne. Some boring social media privacy sub plot or some shit, with 30 minutes of pointless car chases. So disappointing. 4/10
