Kearney was behind the 8 ball already when he took that shambles of a club (Paramatta) on. The players didn't listen or respect him because their core were rotten from the inside out. The board was a Mickey Mouse club and that stilll shows even after he left. You give him a better team now and he will do much better. I know all the Kiwis respect him so taking the Warriors job may be a good thing (Better than McFail) But dont worry I really dont want him to be a club coach at all, keep with the Kiwis is the best fit for him. I want Cleary, Hasler personally.

Yeah, no doubt the state of the club played a significant part too - but still too many questions over his decision making for me.. and when there are a number of guys who look promising, why go with the one that has more question marks hanging over him?

Hasler would be the ideal pick for me, if he became available (not expecting it though). Otherwise there's a few coaches out there I'd be happy enough with.

Andrew McFadden expects to know in the coming week whether he will be Warriors coach next season and will look to move on some senior players if he is reappointed.

McFadden is currently part of the ongoing reviews at Mt Smart, as the club try to uncover what went wrong in a season that, at times, promised so much.

The team's failure to make the top eight, sliding from seventh to tenth with four consecutive losses, has put McFadden's job under the microscope, but he hopes there is a resolution soon.

"We need some certainty in the near future but I understand there is a process to go through," McFadden told Newstalk ZB. "I'm a realist in this game [and] my job has to be questioned given the way we have performed. I know I have done some good things but there is some stuff you just can't ignore.
Decisions will be made hopefully fairly shortly, for everyone, including myself.By next week I imagine there would be something out."

McFadden is in the midst of his third post season review, but this one is by far the most difficult. In 2014 he did relatively well as a rookie coach, taking over from Matt Elliott after round five and guiding the Warriors to within a whisker of the playoffs, though they lost three of their last four matches to miss out. Last year was more disappointing, as Shaun Johnson's injury was the catalyst for a disastrous eight game losing streak. But this year was the most inexplicable.

"I've had to look very hard at myself," said McFadden. "We had some excuses last year for the end of season fadeout but we had none this year."

"We had a good enough team to do better. There is no hiding from the fact we blew our chance. We were sitting seventh with four games to go, with three home games and very winnable games and we didn't perform at all. We are certainly lacking something and that's what the review is designed to find."

McFadden wants to remain in the job - as he has stated many times recently - but says he has no idea of his fate.

"My gut is I don't know," said McFadden. "I've had some conversations with Jim [Doyle] but we understand we have to go through this process. Once he gets that feedback he will make some decisions."

If McFadden does retain his job, he hinted there will be changes to the playing roster, with some senior players in danger of being moved on. While many of the young brigade have performed well this season - like Solomone Kata, David Fusitua, Albert Vete and Sam Lisone - some more experienced players didn't achieve the expected consistency.

"When teams are under pressure you get a picture of who can rise to it," said McFadden.

"We have got some guys who are struggling with that; some of that is to do with age, but some other guys are clearly running out of excuses.

"We need to be tougher. The game is not won on talent; it's won on toughness and character. We had some players well and truly underperform. I take a certain amount of responsibility in that and the players need to as well.

"Everyone has to be [under the spotlight]. Something needs to change because we can't keep going down the same road. That is what the review is for. My position will be first and foremost but everything needs to be looked at in the organization including players. We want success here and if that means changes to our roster then so be it."

No one can question McFadden's work ethic, or the integrity he has shown with some difficult off-field issues this year. He hopes those values - plus the signs of progress at times - will place him in a favourable light.

"I know what happens internally [and] I know the progress we have made," said McFadden. "I have a strong belief in what I am doing. I'm trying to build a foundation that is rock solid and not up and down. I'm pretty hopeful [of keeping the job]. I'm very passionate about this organization and I want to stay here but time will tell."

Well, last week he had the support of all the players. This week hes letting go of a few of the senior players if he remains.

Yeah Ben and Manu and Manu are probably the ones to be let go if changes are going to be made. I wouldnt be surprised if at the end of the review they are let go and the coach goes as well. I would add Bodene to the list as well as players who might be let go...he is a not a rookie and he was caught up in the off field stuff.

I'm all for guys moving on, but who can we pick up or who will step up?
I'd nearly add Hoffman if he wants a release.
All for Manu moving on, but a new experienced coach might be able to turn Ben, or at least give it one year.
Hopefully we have a nutritionist working with our forwards to get some bulk on some boys to get up near 120kg.

Cappy has to go based on game day tactics alone, let alone development of players, use of players and bench selections.

3 years of no finals and same fade at end of the season is not progress.

I'd buy two new speedy wingers, play ken in the second row for ISP and let manu earn his place through ISP.

I'd put Manu on notice but I wouldn't sack him unless we had decent replacements lined up. Ken isn't it, and Fus can only play on one wing.

"I've had to look very hard at myself," said McFadden. "We had some excuses last year for the end of season fadeout but we had none this year."

This to me sums up why McFadden is not the right man for this club. ZERO excuses is the culture we require. What was the excuse last year? That SJ went down? Jase may correct me but we used 33 players this year, which was more than last year. Our injury toll as a whole was greater this year, but apparently our No.7 going down in 2015 gives us the right to lie down in defence and shit the bed for eight losses straight.

If I'm a player and I read that, then SJ goes down again in 2017, wooshkah I've got an excuse to plod and still earn my paycheque. f**k that. Sling your hook McFail, you are not the man for us.

100% right. We have to get the best out of him, a) because we have before and he's been a beast for us (in fact that was last year) b) we have no other options to lead our pack with Lillyman being an honest toiler and getting older, Vete not there yet, Lisone being an airhead/not big enough and Sipley having played about 20mins of NRL c) someone else will if we don't

We can't release Matulino even if he is underperforming. As we know our propping is a problem. We'd be unlikely to find a replacement that could match his ability.

He's one of the game's best props, let's get him back to being that.
Imagine what Bellamy could have done with him at the Storm, watching JB last night is where Ben should be at right now.

No way do we release Matulino

Also, propping's not the problem - Matulino is an international, Lillyman an origin prop and Vete promising... game plan is the issues, McFadden's insistence on using Thompson and pushing Mannering to the middle (as jaseg astutely notes, Mannering is a beast but is not a big metre forward, but is a much better player than Thompson), and using the wingers as middle forwards with the ball - all means the props get fewer hit ups and smaller minutes (as Mannering plays 80).

People are harping on about all the metres Manu and Maumalo make - but Rapana, Mansour etc make as many or more, just different metres - largely wingers metres...

McFadden has to be done if not the place is a bigger joke than I thought

Is anyone harping on about the metres of those guys? I think we did initially but now we realise it's ridiculous to expend all the energy of wingers to make metres over their core roles which are kick receives, link play with their centre both on attack and defence, and finishing. Funnily enough, Manu and Ken have been shithouse at all of those lately. And whilst they are pretty devoid of those skills generally, the fact the coach expects them to do it after performing battering ram jobs for 20 carries a game is pretty ridiculous.

I meant 'harping on' in suggesting because they have the biggest metres against their names the props are a problem - most teams have wings or fullback with the biggest metres - our problem is they suck up our props hit ups, and playing three edge backrowers means we only have two metre gainers on at any one time

We agree... guess I was ambiguous in how I phrased it

Kearney odds on to lead Warriors
IF there were a betting market on the next NRL coach to be sacked, the Warriors’ Andrew McFadden would be favourite, even ahead of Paul McGregor at the Dragons.

Our sources across the Tasman are telling us that Kiwi Test coach Stephen Kearney will be in charge in Auckland for the 2017 season.

Kearney may have had a poor record in his two years at Parramatta (42 games for just a 24 per cent win record) but he comes from the Craig Bellamy-Melbourne Storm system and has also done an outstanding job as the Kiwis’ Test coach.

Expect an announcement once he has completed his finals commitments as Wayne Bennett’s assistant coach at the Brisbane Broncos.
