How many games do you need to coach to not be considered a Rookie anymore? If he signs on for next year then he is no longer a rookie, it will be his second year. He has allready coached for half an NRL season. If he was a young fella who has only been involved in the game in a coaching capacity for a short time you can call him a rookie but he has been around for a while as assistant and has even assisted the coach at rep level so Mary should not be classified as a rookie as such. Someone like Hornby. Young, Barrett or Fein who have only started coaching are more or less in the Rookie category. I would not put Mary there.

If they do go for Mary they will save big dollars and hopefully put some clauses where they can terminate the contract with no huge payout. If that is the case the board have nothing to lose. Worse case scenario that have a bad start to the season and bring another coach in. Teams play better when a new coach comes in anyway.

Mary's strategies eg Creagh to front row. Dugan centre. Matthews playing regularly show how bloody incompetent Price was. He had no idea a fact which should have been acknowledged by the Board after 1 season.

You're right of course however other things like injuries, retirements and losing players to other clubs clouded what was really going on to a large extent and he was given the benefit of the doubt.

You have to wonder since Mary's turned the team around exactly what Price was doing? They would have been just as good coaching themselves

You have a point as there must be some stage when a coach is not a rookie. IMO when a coach has a full preseason and full regular season they are not a rookie. With every game Mary coaches he gets closer to dropping that tag. I wouldn't put him in the same category as someone who has never coached at NRL level but I still think he can be called a rookie until mid 2015.

Another question could be posed, if a coach has experience in the ESL and is starting his 1st season in NRL is he a rookie then or not? If so then a rookie won the premiership last year. Maguire also had an instant impact at Souths.

Brad Arthur has also taken the Eels from 2 consecutive wooden spoons to currently equal 7th.

I would probably prefer a rookie who is showing promise and the players are responding to rather than an experienced coach who has failed in recent times.

Spot on. How bad was Price. Why did they wait so long to get rid of him. It was plainly obvious to all except the board that Price had to go.

One day Mary might end up being a great coach. Right now he is a rookie interim NRL coach and being measured against the performance of one of the worst coach's the Dragons have ever had.

In my opion the Dragons need an experience coach capable of re-building the squad and at best Mary might be a reasonable assistant.

In all fairness Possm I think Mary's being measured by results which have been quite good. He gets and deserves some credit for turning potential wooden spooners around with a team he didn't recruit. He can't help how poor the previous coach was and that in itself creates more work to undo the structures he inherited. It's perfectly fine to not want him coaching next year and we are all pretty divided on that but he hasn't put a foot wrong yet

I still think their is no rush to sign anyone.......all the contenders, including Mary, don't exactly have nrl clubs lining up to sign them.
Mary is giving it a good crack though. He has assembled a good team around him, Millard with his experience, and bringing in club legends like Hornby and cooper has only added positives to the side.
makes you wonder what the hell was price doing for 2.5 years?

Yes makes you wonder. I don't think the club is rushing to sign Mary and I'm sure they're doing there due diligence and have sounded out a few other coaches without making it too formal My gut feeling is they are dragging it out as long as possible to see how Mary travels for the rest of the season. I'm ok with the situation as I don't believe there are many players on the market for next season that we need. I'd probably consider Kasiano depending on the coin and get him fitter

How long are we going to endure the hand wringing about Price?
Some of you blokes are bigger whingers than some of my sister in laws. I thought they were specialists in constantly moaning about past events, but they're amateurs compared to some of you blokes.

I'm now on board the anti rookie, anti old boy, anti antiquated, anti Illawarra line.
No L platers!!

Given who may be available at season's end I think the answer is obvious.

John Kartwrite.

188 games, so not a rookie.
Never been a part of Saints, so not an old boy.
Rumour has it has never been near a South Coast beach, so pure of blood.
Young of age, pure of heart.
Even got his team to the semis a couple of times.

Who's with me?

Anybody?

There was players on the market but we always miss out and then say there is no players on the market and if cant find two good forwards for next year, we will end up again just trying to get into the finals. Not good enough buddy as we are the mighty saints who should be fighting for the top 4 finish.

We always miss out?
I thought we signed Widdop, Thompson, Marshall, Dugan, Williams, Beale, all of whom we targeted.
Am I missing something?

FYI.....from the Lurker??????????

Parish to the Dragons?

If Paul McGregor gets the Dragons job full-time - and indications are he will - don't be surprised to see Matt Parish join his staff.

Parish quit the Raiders to be closer to his family in Sydney last week and is on the lookout for a gig.

The two worked well together in the NSW Blues camp this season and are firm friends.

Expect McGregor to be appointed to the head role soon.

I don't normally give 'The Lurker' any credibility as he has less knowledge than Bunniesmong but there has been a bit of speculation about this for a few weeks and I would think a good choice for an assistant. If so, the stars may just align for Mary?
Keeps Tom Shines and Brian Smith out of the equation as an added bonus :D

Edit: His family or Hadley's ?
