Billy Slater on field bullying. A low act

So if a Raiders player's mum died tomorrow and it was all over the media you'd be fine with opposition players using "I f**ked your mum" jokes to him this weekend? Also a common sledge in sport, by your logic it would be fair game.

Yep, absolutely, all's fair in love and war
if a raiders player's mum died, i would expect he wouldnt play this week, id also expect if he did most wouldnt be so classless to sledge him about it, but i would also expect if a Slater or anyone else did sledge him about it, he'd channel his anger in the right manner and lay the prick out in a legal way

if he's going to lose his cool and cost us a penalty, or worse, he's a potential liability and he shouldnt play. Mind you i think thats also an entirely different circumstance. But each their own, the same logic applies

Im not saying Slater isnt a merkin, he is, but in this case, i think the player needs to accept he may be target and its up to him to no react

that could be perceived as having a dig at depression

That was in no way a shot at his depression, you hear that exact stuff 100x a game, just so happen this time it was said to someone who suffers depression

thats context mate. They werent out on the street, they were on a footy field and slater told him the same thing he would have told 100 others this year

are you really that naive/stupid? You think it's just a coincidence that Cory happens to have gone public with his depression and Slater is just using this as a random jibe? Please

so many people seem to be struggling with the context. Really, I completely agree with Joey's article. I haven't taken the politically correct stance at all, but you have to be absolutely kidding yourself or be extremely daft to not understand;

a) the context in which it was said and
b) the connotations it had.

people talking about the 'degree' of insult have missed the entire point. it was a jibe at cory having depression, how can you miss that? it doesn't matter what he said. Go kill yourself, go have a cry, same sh*t. lol.

for the record, slater is a dickhead and Cory should have belted him and that's all there is to it. Slater doesn't need to be punished by the NRL or any of that bullsh*t, but I think in the end he deserved a good old punch in the face. I would have liked to see it, as I bet many would.

Im not trying to defend Billy, but after all Corey has been through im surprised this got to him.
I guess when people say "harden up" they also mean "grow up" in the sense adults dont have time for other adults who are emotionally challanged unless theyre close to that person.

I went to my room, but your mum was there and she comforted me. No need for me to cry now. I like 'em ugly.

Or is that a non acceptable sledge?

UNDERSTAND this: Billy Slater's sledge on Cory Paterson was far worse than reported. There was more to it than "Why don't you go to your room and have a cry".
Indeed, Paterson remains filthy that it has been reported as such. As this column understands it, the line was spun directly out of the Storm and Slater camps.

The Knights forward won't go public to clarify the situation because he wants to keep the incident on the field, as he has maintained all along.

That's nice, but I severely doubt you've seen the effects of clinical depression yourself.

You show your stupidity when you make a distinction between mental issues and 'medical thing', as you put it.

And nobody is debating that killing yourself is selfish. But that really isn't relevant.

The ad-hominem attacks from those in support of Slater show how empty their arguments are.

You may know in depth about depression but i still strongly agree that its not a disease and all it is is someone wanting attention cause they feel sorry for themselves and it becomes a habit not an illness

"Go to your room and have a cry". Mate, I could say that to anybody in any situation and it's a nothing incident. If he'd said it to anyone else on the field that night it'd be a nothing incident. It's just a throw away comment from Slater with very little in it. If he'd said "go and top yerself" then that's something else all together but I think they've made too big a deal of it.

I have cousin who hates Slater and supports the Knights but she doesn't even think there was much in what he said.

A few years ago in the AFL a player sledged a young fella under going treatment for cancer. Now THAT was a sh*t storm!

As someone that has been on antidepresants for 8 years and as someone that has experienced the nagativity of suffering from the condition since late primary school, all I can say is u are an ignorant moron! I hope you are single, because no woman deserves to be with someone who's head is so far up their own arse that they are out of touch with ethics and reason...

Just read it JS. It'll take more than a snippet in the Telecrap to convince me, sorry.

Going public with what was REALLY said would surely give players a greater understanding of the seriousness of depression and mental illness. That's reason enough to go public IMO but if he wants to leave it on the field then so be it.
