New Zealand 2 will deal a massive blow to NZ rugby

Yep, their strict adherence to non-disclosure & "let's be better" attitude when turned down are hopefully winning them some points with V'Landys.

New Zealand 2 will deal a massive blow to NZ rugby

"South Island NRL Bid" have just posted to Facebook, saying "Round 1 is over, time to lift our game!" (Exact quote), and adding the following photo:

    18th club, whose next?

Precisely this. The NRL needs to "pick winners" ie determine what the next strategic location(s) are, THEN figure out the best model to make them happen in a successful way. Just throwing the door open to bids from where-ever is almost akin to saying "we don't know what the best choice is...

New Zealand 2 will deal a massive blow to NZ rugby

It could well just be the NRL putting up a "front"/bargaining position to a) throw media off the scent & b) try to crank up the offers from bidders (especially around entry fees)

    WA BEARS

Yeah - I've been absolutely stunned at how watertight the process has been outside of Perth Bears & PNG - but if I was any other bidder I'd be happy with those two bids getting all the media coverage.. and just keep my head down while they deal with so much public scrutiny. I absolutely hope...

There's also a lack of news on expansion since that Perth bid stumbled. Everything has gone rather quiet, at a time many were expecting announcements.

New Zealand 2 will deal a massive blow to NZ rugby

Ahh but to put it into even more perspective, the Wellington economy is tanking - big time. Government-sector redundancies have added to cost of living pressure that the all of the country has been dealing with to really crunch down on disposable income here. For CBD businesses it's been...

I've never even heard of him aside from this Bears link.

Ahh the good old days of the "Don't care where" Bears - shopping the brand around to anywhere that might be a doorway back into the NRL :)

So I suppose at the end of the 2030s they just pack-up the PNG team & replace them with (I guess) the financial slam-dunk of another Brisbane team?

    WA BEARS

Palmerston North?!? Good grief, they can't even put together a winning provincial rugby union team.... ;)

    New Team Colours

Yeah, I think a yellow-based main jersey with red & black would do. The question is whether they want to distinguish the club from the national team by either adding a color or changing the shade of one. Remember when the NZ Warriors got close to Kiwis colors? There was a period when the...

    New Team Colours

'I That could be an option for their NRL side - maybe with some 3rd color - if wanting to distinguish from the national team

New Zealand 2 will deal a massive blow to NZ rugby

That's a point that's very often lost on Australians - many NZ sports fans are the equivalent of "swing voters" - we'll appreciate an entertaining game of union OR league, and often there's no deep seated hatred of one or the other. Many Australians just can't get their head around that...

    WA BEARS

That's a really good point - and just asking for a lump sum of cash which (at least in part) goes to incumbent clubs doesn't sound like a security against "worst case" potential losses at all.
  19. flippikat

    18th club, whose next?

Exactly. This is where the Titans & Knights need to develop/strengthen working relationships/feeder arrangements with the areas geographically between them.

New Zealand 2 will deal a massive blow to NZ rugby

I've mentioned it before, but it's worth keeping in mind that bringing in Christchurch is ALSO signalling to other NRL clubs & bids that the NRL likes the prospect of games in a new & enclosed stadium. There's some existing clubs out there that are pondering upgrades or new builds, plus...
