How the west would win - Cup means new stadium

Goddo makes a good point, the NRL will be more displaced than the AFL. The AFL can still play four matches per week at Etihad Stadium, one at the Gabba, one at AAMI Stadium, one at the WACA, and one at Blacktown. Throw in Aurora Stadium in Launceston, Manuka Oval in Canberra and TIO Stadium in...

How the west would win - Cup means new stadium

Frank Lowy would like to have a 35-45k Blacktown stadium paid for by the public purse. What Frank Lowy wants, he doesn't always get. He does get Roy Masters to shill for him, though. I'm not sure how Lowy is going to justify only giving Melbourne one group and Sydney two. At the moment it looks...

    Offsiders

It's a good point about Sydney already having two WC-ready stadia and hosting two groups at most, though. Lowy reckons he's including 16 stadia in the bid but he's kidding himself if he thinks he's going to get funding to upgrade a dozen or more rectangular venues. There's a cubic buttload of...

I daresay GWS would continue to use the Blacktown oval for training and admin, plus preseason and maybe even the odd H&A game against a small club like Port Adelaide or Fremantle. I don't think Australia will win the bid anyway, so this is all probably moot.

What the hell is that illustration? Is that supposed to be rugby league players? Could Fairfax get any more effeminate?

Loving it: the fumbleball writers are expressing concern

Saying that league is in a "golden age" is gilding the lily somewhat. Might be some of that "childish awe" talking. Both the NRL and AFL have been treading water somewhat in recent years in terms of attendances and ratings, not growing nearly as much as the Australian population itself. The...

RL independence day arrives - NRL Independent Commission announced for November 1

It should be pointed out, PBB, that the last AFL rights deal also included first and last rights for Seven. And it turned out pretty good for all concerned, because Nine pushed them all the way. If Seven pushes Nine all the way this time to produce a big headline figure, it's good news for...

New Oz Pay-TV operator (owned by billionaire) looking for sports

The history of such efforts is filled with middleman rights arbitrageurs paying the sport too much and not getting enough back from the TV networks, and thus going under. It's happened a couple of times that way in India with cricket rights. I would be skeptical of Fetch having a real impact...

First and last rights aren't that much of an imposition as long as there's comeptition to drive the price up. Which there may well be if the likes of Fetch enter the market.

There are three ways of changing attendances, I reckon. 1) More work by clubs and the league on making memberships more attractive and tickets more affordable. 2) Ground rationalisation and/or upgrades, to maximise games played at grounds that have decent capacity and good transport. 3) New...

    2010 Crowd Watch

Home & away crowd average changes in the last three years: up 1% down 1% up 3% There's nothing like the 10-15% increases that some in this thread were predicting. The last time there was a jump like that was 2005 with a 12% increase, half of which was lost again in 2006.
