If travel costs are an issue then no Perth team

think before you post
It's pointless. He makes outrageous claims, cherry picks data and any data not to his liking means you're a troll.
Nobody can match his commitment to bullshit.
I already argued for pages about travel being a issue for a new team but he argued relentlessly that it wasn't!
Now we're talking about PNG it's an issue.

Perth Red is the troll.

The only benefit but at what cost to any true and lasting expansion in Perth or NZ?

PNG would be a success onfield, Perth maybe not and if interest dropped in 10 years both could be in the same situation. As with all of these expansion locations

haha, whoosh, the sound of the discussion points going over your head.

The commercial flight costs are roughly the same for perth, wellington and Port Moresby. But a PNG team in Cairns NRL has to pay every week for them to travel, flights are infrequent for travelling clubs getting to PNG, meaning possible charter costs, and the extra costs associate with a PNG club in cairns. All this will need to be covered by Govt as well as the lost opportunity costs for NRl as well as the running costs for the club. $30mill a year from Gov for a guaranteed 20 years should do it.

coming from the guy who is using 25 year old crowds from a unique period in the games history as some sort of relevant data set lol

This is the concern with Perth in the comp
Yep, attracting players will be challenge there is no doubt. Same could be said for all 3 possible new market bid areas for the first few years.
You'd hope eventually a NZ2 side would be able to develop home grown easier but Warriors have shown it isnt as easy as we'd think given most talented 15 year old kiwis are moving to Australia.
PNG, good luck getting players to travel every week and play in Port Moresby
Perth moving to other side of country wont be an easy sell when you've got 16 options nearer home. Same problem Warriors have had signing Australian players.

Heres an idea the NRL could recognise the problem and do something proactive about it!

So your argument is the extra 500k in travel costs for png over Perth will eat up the 15 million pa the federal govt pays them ?

doesn’t seem credible to me

I'd back a PNG squad of locals to make the 8 within 5 years though... Perth no so

A new Zealand team would be a simple set up like the Dolphins.
A Perth team needs:
*Extra funding from the NRL
* Salery cap concessions
* government help
* Stadium upgrades

Why are we doing all this again?

Aren't all of the bids like that though?

None screams certain to work or they would already be in the comp
its not about which expansion bid is going to be the easiest - otherwise it would be Central Coast Bears, it should be about which one benefits the NRL and Rugby League the most long term but yes the business case has to stack up too...

A successful PNG team would be great for the NRL but I think there is way more question marks over it's viability than a Perth team.

Funny how perfect Perth is for expansion...then wants the government's help and what now? Salary cap exemptions?
Atleast Perth is part of Australia and it would make for a truly National competition because atm that is not what the NRL currently is despite its title.
A PNG team of locals has been in the Q Cup since 2014 winning only one title in 2017 and you expect them to compete at NRL level lol

Genuinely interesting time considering that any of Perth, NZ2 or PNG could be the next team with all circumstances and hints dropped from V’Landys & Abdo considered. For teams 19-20 you can throw Brisbane 3 & Adelaide in to the mix as well.

If I had to guess at an order I’d go:

18 - Perth in 2025 or 2026
19 - PNG in 2030 (Based in Sydney or Brisbane)
20 - South Island NZ (Christchurch) in 2032

Pause for a while.

21 & 22 - 2 of West Brisbane/Ipswich, Adelaide or NZ3 (Wellington or Auckland 2). CQ or CC an outside chance.

Whether we would ever get to 22 is dependent on a lot of things, 20 seems doable if the current admin stays in charge.

I've always said I'm not against Perth but it's not the perfect bid like a certain pelican likes to repeatedly tell us.

And as per another poster, there is no perfect bid, but Perth has a number of significant hurdles in its path that you'd want a responsible controlling body to recognise before they granted an 18th licence.

Why do you say that? Any team that comes in is going to need players.

RL works in the Regional areas because there are local guys to fill holes, A Pacific Island team, PNG, NZ all have access to players.

Granted they are raw but PNG are in QLD Cup, Fiji in Ron Massey Cup, Not to mention scattered across Uk and Australian lower tiers.

If Perth can't get players across, Then what?
