Ive no problem with PNG coming in and if Aus govt wants to pss our money away on it thats on us for voting them in. My concern is long term viability, we shouldnt be bringing in clubs that have no hope of being viable beyond the short to mid term.

If NRL was AFL and had the money and will to prop them up forever more then Id be right behind it. Bringing them in just to see them fail in a few years and disappear is the last thing the NRl should be doing.

The other big issue is competitiveness. If you think it will be hard for Perth to attract players how the hell do you convince these rich players and their families to move to cairns and have to fly 24 times a year to play? With half of those games being hot, humid, unsafe Port Moresby! Good luck with that one.

If AwFuL has to prop up the Lions, then how the f**k will a Perth-based NRL team cope?

You’re right about being competitive on the field

but it won’t matter they will sell out regardless and still have corporate sponsors lining out the door

png is about developing rugby league there to be nrl level and the benefits that flow on to the game via unlimited juniors and also another strong test nation

and of course the joy it will give a nation

as a rugby league fan the last point should even be agreed by you

nongermane

but......
Lions earnt in 2022
$10.3mill in ticket and membership sales
$12.8 mill in sponsors and corporate sales
$2.2mill in merch sales

$2.4mill profit for the year

If a Perth NRl team can get close to matching that we'll be laughing!

Oh Id love it if it works, it just seems the idea of bringing in a developing nation into a top tier other country sport seems incredibly out there. Like I said if they get in I'll be cheering them on and desperately hoping they can be successful. It will be amazing for Rl fans in PNG f they can make it work

AFL club running costs are too much, Lions shouldn't need to be propped up by the AFL. Something not right with their business model.

The answer for Perth is private investment or they partner up with some club on the East Coast (Bears maybe) probably one with pokie clubs. Raiders have owned clubs in QLD, Logan of all places...

Maybe have a tiny bit of faith that the bid team and politicians aren’t totally clueless

risk reward is all in our favour

i can’t see it failing tbh

but I don’t think they will ever win the nrl either

Lions averaged 27,455 fans to their home games.

Perth Rectangular Stadium has a capacity of 20,500.

The last NRL game played at PRS drew less than 7k fans through the gate.

Good luck generating strong revenue from corporate hospitality in a dump like PRS.

Cheering them on?

Like the way you cheered the Dolphins in the lead up to their entry and throughout 2023?

Aside from the $17m Perth will get from the annual grant, it will need to generate $25m via football operations to compete with the Cowboys.

Perth will need to hire a significant amount of talent scouts and development officers to acquire talent. A mediocre squad losing more games than it wins will not draw strong crowds and sponsorship revenue.

There's also the need for a high performance training centre. The club doesn't have one and will need at least $10-20m to build a small one. There are clubs on the east coast with high performance training centres worth over $50m.

If the Aus and PNG Govs are willing to help RL grow in PNG then that's a good thing for our game. AwFuL would take the money if it was on offer.

Sure but two things.

1. How much of this money is going to be funding the NRL side (it’s not $600 million)
2. Again how are they going to fund themselves if and when the government pulls funding
