so you think they should just stand there and have to watch the ball roll into the stumps
well, if the ball hits you and you fall over and hit your stumps, you're out, if the ball knocks your helmet off and it knocks the bails, you're out, those are much harsher than not being allowed to handle the ball or hit it twice (which are already against the rules).

Years ago, Dean Jones was batting and the ball lodged between his pad and leg. He swished it away with his hand to dislodge it.

The Pakistani keeper (can't remember exactly) appealed for handling the ball. It was dismissed and the commentators accused the keeper of poor sportsmanship as Jones was not handling the ball to protect his wicket.

That's always stuck with me for some reason.

even stranger, the hands are deemed to be part o the bat, you you can hit the ball away with the bat but not your hands

I suspect that if your hands were in contact with the bat, you could then use your hands

At that stage when the ball was lodged in the pad, the ball is deemed to be dead. Hence, Jones can get it out with his hand.

Cowan doing the job he is in the team for here.

The hands are part of the bat until they come off it. Which is why kaspowicz shouldn't have been given out in the 2005 ashes test. Of course it is all moot as Handspitter kicked the ball away.

Zaheer is all over the place now because he's tired, all 3 bowlers have up till now been very consistent.

In fairness then, the keeper just may have not known the rules.

Rashid Latif perhaps.

There is also a bit of an unwritten rule in cricket that the batsmen shouldn't touch the ball as it is the fielding teams. That's why you often see batsmen ask permission to pick up the ball and toss it to a fielder if it drops by their feet.
