I wouldn't get too carried away though, this is New Zealand after all.
If they get rolled for a lead of around 100 England can still force their way back in.

Looking at the highlights there were some terrible shots from England. As well as New Zealand bowled they didn't run through the line-up like I had initially thought.

Just logged on and saw the Stumps scores. Go Black Caps!!!!!!! Mustn't have been too hard to bat on since New Zealand are 0 for 131 at Stumps in reply to England's 167

NZ fans know not to count their chickens... as said above, we've had good days before what we've stuggled to do is put good days back-to-back. We'll feel much better if we push pass 400... and I really hope we can, but we'll see

Pleasantly surprised by Fulton's innings. Gritty. Patient.

Fulton was stoic, Rutherford played his shots. Great pair, complemented each other well.

Staggering stat McMillan brought up in commentary - since Mark Richardson retired, 30% of NZ innings have seen one of the openers dismissed in either the first or second over of play.

Not surprising, having followed their matches though. Even in recent years as their middle order has shown improvement with Taylor, Ryder, Williamson around they've always been up against it due to opener failings

Not sure Fulton is a long term answer (guess I am stating the obvious there) ... the worry is Guptill will be rushed back in, and he's a big reason for the 30% stat above, and only useful against Zimbabwe or Bangladesh in test cricket

Tremendous century from Rutherford on debut. He has proven at domestic level that he has the aptitude to put another 100 on top of that. Would love to see him crack on and post a big score.

NZ also need to pick up the pace here. Not sure if they need to do it right now, but soon...

Rutherford looks so much more comfortable in the longer format with a bit of time.
He needs to work on his shorter game and working the 1's and 2's there but he is a very good long term prospect.

Good century.
