$2,000,000 For A 70 Year Old Ground And Just 5648 Fans?

Why should they?

Because tax payers put up $24,000,000 for a stadium that the West bTigers now have a massive stake in.

Balmain fans seem to think that they alone are the future of the Wests Tigers. But they are not. This is a joint venture....TWO teams....one from Balmain and one from Campbelltown.

Campbelltown is the future of the Tigers. They get good crowds in a MUCH better stadium. Campbelltown is where the juniors are and is a fast growing area. In Campbelltown the Tigers dont have to compete as much as they do in Balmain for the attention of their local fans.

You say "Why should they". My question is why shouldnt they play all their games at Campbelltown. The Wests Magpies gave up their logo to form this joint venture....only a stupid Balmain fan would turn their back on the great gift the Magpies gave the joint venture.....a growing area and a brand new stadium.

Why shouldn't they? Because it's a joint venture and they represent Balmain and the inner city (with the bulldogs).

Balmain location is demographically shifting back towards families. In fact Balmain juniors at this stage are outdoing the Magpies in Flegg. Why should we move? That's not even relevant. Why shouldn't the Balmain district have their stadium rennovated? It's either that or watch it collapse to the ground.

As for what Balmain fans think. Go here http://forums.leagueunlimited.com/viewtopic.php?t=31523&start=0
We don't want to stay full time at leichardt we want an even share.

Congratulations, you have made a correct statement at last.
Yes the Wests Tigers are formed from a team at Balmain and a team from the western suburbs of Sydney.

This is based on what? The fact the stadium got an upgrade and Leichhardt didn't?

The JV is a 50/50 operation, in all aspects. A move to one ground would recquire a compensation for Balmain. As soon as that starts to happen, you end up with in fighting over who has the upper hand of the JV.

If campbelltown fans deserve to see their team play locally, then so do Balmain fans.

Yes Leichhardt must stay, with the NSW taxpayer chipping in $2 million to ensure that. Campbelltown Stadium can hardly be expected to cope with crowds of 5,648.

What about North Melbourne crowds of 3,000 in Canberra

What about the 7,000 at the MCG yesterday. Why waste the money playing games there when you only get 7,000 (posted at 11,000 but a lot less)

More AFL crowd fudging.

Here's a hot Tip nospam49-In the 4 complete seasons of the JV, Campelltown has only outaveraged Leichardt ONCE, and looks set to lose out to the old girl again this year. This is with Leichardts smaller capacity...

Maybe the Sydney Clubs should just play at Aussie and Telstra? God knows how many dyalisis machines could be bought if we bulldozed down Penrith Stadium and sold it to property developers...

Well said, I have been saying these things for years.

Western Suburbs is a non identity in the so called joint venture. It's all ME ME ME from the Balmain side, and bugger the Maggies. How good is this attitude for the game of RL.

Campbelltown is the future for the club and is growing, but many blind fools cannot see this. The Campbelltown area has the potential to be bigger and better than the Penrith region.

Time to move out west and spend the money on hospital, police, etc and not some run down outhouse.

I have to agreewith LF. even theoughthe poms on TotalRl hate his guts, he does raise some interesting ponits here.
city clubs like balmain, and parramatta and co, are not the future of the game.

it is the NATIONAL rugby league, yet we still cater for crappy sydney clubs. move the tigers out west permanantly, and shift parra to perth or adelaide. no future for sydney clubs, ad union will take over.

And let juniors that will come through like Halatau, Harrison, Farah, Greally et al rot right? Get farked. We're not moving. That's not an issue. The issues is whether or not we get the 2 mill. Argue about THAT.

Where do you suggest we move anyway? The SFS can't support a 4th tenant.

Garbage, the MCG and Telstra dome support 9 tenants between them.

It's crap like leichardt oval which is severly holding this game back in Sydney.

The AFL realised this ages ago that top quality stadiums were required to bring in more fans for the the support, but simple economic realities indicate that every team can't afford it's own. To get this, teams simply have to share quality grounds.

Melbourne grounds such as Princess Park, Windy Hill, Waverly, etc have as much "tradition" and "character" as places like leichardt, it didn't stop them moving into the 21st century though, and their crowds have increased from 23,000 to 34,000 since 1990, nearly 50%.

Idyllically Sydney should have 3 quality stadiums.

40,000 at SFS
40,000 at Parramatta Stadium would cover east and west.

82,000 at Homebush.

While this isn't going to happen for a long time, it isn't justifiable to spend money on a stadium that few people go to, and doesn't have any further room for growth.

You say 'this is a community facility for all balmain residents'.

So people get to walk their dog on the pitch, and have picnics there ? Other than a bunch of footballer, it's a mighty high priced piece of land for Balmain residents not to use.

And Balmain residents aren't the only stakeholders. The whole states taxpayers, and also opposition visiting fans are stakeholders. I'm sure many don't like visiting such a sh*thole, and despite a $2 million coat of paint it will remain a sh*thole. A 50% increase in AFL fans in 15 years show fans prefer to show up to a quality venue.

Clinging onto antiquated relics like leichardt becase "they were there first" and "us guys wearing orange and black like it here", just doesn't cut it anymore.

Also.....for the 10% of League fans that go there and like the place...there are 90% of people that just think its a dump!

And $2,000,000.....thats going to do stuff all! This isnt Backyard Blitz, this is government spending. It will got $1,500,000 just to get someone up off their arse to see what needs to be done to the place.

You'll spend $2,000,000 just to tear down a couple of old stands and make the ground look even worse. When works finished....it will be little better then Western Weekender Stadium in St Marys!

So you are against the recent upgrades to Oki Jubilee Stadium on behalf of St George? Taxpayer money went into that development.

Perhaps you should make more uninformed comments and get all joint venture supporters offside.

May I ask what team you support?

Home of the Wests Tigers in the NRL who also play half their home games at Campbelltown Stadium, and also former home of the Balmain Tigers.
Leichhardt Oval has a main grandstand with two levels on the main side, a large grass hill with a limited number of seats on the outer side. Seats and standing room at one end, and two small grandstands at the other end. These small grandstands are all what remain of the ground when it used to be a oval field running East to West. The ground was then redeveloped in the 1970's and converted into a rectangular field running North to South. These two old stands are currently closed to the public due to a termite problem. Their significance is the subject of a local heritage debate as the council figures out what to do about the problem.

Location Sydney, New South Wales
Capacity 20,000
Record Crowd 23,000 - R.L. KB Cup Final - 12/8/1981
