I have followed League for the past 30 years faithfully. But in my opinion the competition is in the worst shape I have seen it. The crowds in Sydney this year have been pathetic and its near impossible to get excited about the games each weekend.

Crowds in 1978
Round 2, Souths v Easts, Crowd: 15,208 at Redfern
Round 13, East v Souths, Crowd: 14,131 at Sports Ground

Crowds in 2008
Round 1, Souths v Easts, Crowd: 29,386 at Statium Australia
Round 13, East v Souths, Crowd: 18,127 at SFS

Yep packed houses in 78 (thirty years ago) and stadiums not even half full 30 years later. In the centenary of Rugby League the crowds in Sydney have been terrible. I am sorry but the passion has gone. And 10000 at Leichardt for Hodgsons's last game - give me a break!

There was 35,000 for a Roosters v Souths game in 2002

26,000 for a Roosters v Souths game in 92 or 93

23,000 for a Roosters v Souths game on a Monday night at the SFS last year. Only 18k tonight.

Use whatever figures you like.

Hmmm... 30 years with an increase of 5,500...

Now that;s before the larger drawing crowds of Brisbane, Newcastle, Gold Coast and North Queensland... So that puts the increase less than that...

In 30 years it is disgraceful!

The point lost here is that the the Sydney crowds in 1978 are very similar to those in 2008, The average is bumped up by Newcastle and the three Brisbane Teams.

In any case its thirty years on.

If anybody truly believes Sydney crowds have not been poor this year then seek help.

They have been no poorer than in previous years, but I concur that overall the game should be drawing larger crowds.

That is my point - there is no momentum. I love the game but I am feeling the wane. Bring it back with some great footy and great crowds - please!

you can't blame TV alone. TV pays us the lion share of the money in the game, he who pays the piper and all that!
I'd say the critics of sydney cant have it both ways as well. You cant talk up how we need to pander to the TV companies then criticize when crowds arent great, due in part scheduling.

Likewise the NRL. They cant just say how the Sydney clubs need to lift their game when they have allowed a situation where the tv companies at relatively short notice control the scheduling and thus games arent scheduled in a way to maximise crowds, which is think they should be, they are scheduled in a way to maximise the profits of said TV companies. This round is definately the perfect example, if 2 of tonight tigers match, mondays manly match or newcastle match tomorrow were the sunday arvo games they would almost certainly be sold out, yet we are left with bulldogs brisbane (admittedly if the dogs were going well this would be a big crowd) and nz penrith in NZ n the spots where sydney people generally prefer to go to the games, especially at the suburban grounds.

AFL, which does get a substantially better deal than us, doesnt have to suck up to the TV companies as much as we do by having them pick and choose and having the rounds announced late etc. They still manage to select their draw early with everything set in place early. Why cant we do this?
