The AFL didn't really get started on memberships and big crowds until they introduced their commission in the 80s... then through the 80s- now their memberships have risen sharply. You are right... but clubs didn't feel the need to diversify their incomes, there has been no central administrative body encouraging the clubs, they had a dependency on pokies money, and there was the whole media war of the 90s.

All those things are now likely to change, which is why we are seeing results now... the support has always been there, just not the will to make it happen.

Well done to the Storm fans. There goes the firfy of them adding nothing to the game other than media value!

Cart before the horse there. The VFL had big attendances decades before the 80's.

Not really as most of the teams had a home ground they played at.

Yeah bigger crowds than RL, but we are around where they were before they all moved to the G.

Are you serious? How many times do we have to go over this?

Melbourne released their packages on February 1, approximately two full months after everyone else. Hand was forced by the new stadium arrangements.

Ok, I missed that they delayed the start of their membership drive.

Those comparative figures make it look bad though. And when my club moved stadiums I don't remember them waits until a few weeks before the season to start selling season tickets, but hey.

And don't forget that the Storm play their first home game in round 4, so they have 3 extra weeks ahead of some teams to sell more season tickets... which is good for them considering their very late start.

Actually some teams have until round 2 and Manly's first home game is in round 3. The breakdown of teams for which round they play their first home game (in order of above membership list) is:

Broncos - round 1
Rabbitohs - round 1
Dragons - round 2
Cowboys - round 2
Bulldogs - round 1
Eels - round 1
Knights - round 2
Wests Tigers - round 1
Titans - round 1
Storm - round 4
Warriors - round 2
Raiders - round 2
Panthers - round 1
Roosters - round 2
Sea Eagles - round 3
Sharks - round 1

So the draw seems to be kind to us in that most teams that haven't reached their 2009 totals yet have an extra week to sell more tickets - Cowboys, Warriors, Raiders, Roosters. Sea Eagles have an extra 2 weeks and Storm have an extra 3 weeks. Of the teams that haven't reached their 2009 totals yet, only the Titans and Panthers play at home in round 1.

Adding up the 2009 & 2010 totals so far, we are exactly 3,500 season tickets short of the 2009 total which we should beat easily in the next week (2009 = 92,325 av: 5,770 per club vs 2010 so far = 88,825 av: 5,551 per club), and we should reach 100,000 season tickets total.

Rabbitohs, Dragons and Dogs should be commended!!

awesome effort already having a strong base and improving on it rapidly

true supporters.

If either of them won the premiership in the next cpl of years you would have to expect that year would jump by a further 20 or 30%

That is hopeless for the Titans and Cows!!

True. Imagine the fall out from a Rabbits Dragons GF as far as members go... 12k the following season each wouldn't be unexpected.

A lot of the stronger Sydney clubs had a good year last year... Dragons MP, Eels GF, Dogs Runners Up in season and Semi Final. This is defeinately reflected in their numbers.

i think souths and saints will end up close to 12k this year

they will both be on 10k prior to the charity shield and that is still 3 weeks before their first home game
