Just read this in the Illawarra Mercury -
'The Illawarra Steelers are on the verge of resurrection.

The Mercury understands the Steelers are in the process of developing an 11th-hour campaign to act as the St George Illawarra Dragons' feeder club in the NSW Cup this season.
Their bid comes after the Shellharbour Dragons rejected St George Illawarra's latest offer, which has left the reigning NRL premiers without a feeder club for 2011.
A lack of finance and a limited time-frame are the major obstacles standing between the Steelers and a return to senior football.
There are only 52 days before the NSW Cup season kicks off and a decision on the Steelers' playing future is expected to be made within the next 48 hours.
The Southern Marlins - the team name requested by Shellharbour when the Dragons and Canberra Raiders appeared to have agreed to terms for a NSW Cup joint-venture - will be removed from the competition draw. However, the NSWRL has thrown its support behind the Steelers and has provided the club with the opportunity to come up with a solution before substituting the Marlins for a bye'..........Go The Steelers!!!

This is brilliant news, hope it happens. Would love a trip to the Gong to watch the Jets!
If we could get a strong 12 team league with some old name clubs in there that would be great.

NZ Warriors v- Auckland Vulcans
Manly - Norths
Wests - Western Suburbs
Penrith - Windsor
Parramatta - Cabramatta
St George Ill - Steelers
Souths - Jets
Bulldogs - Sydney Bulls
Roosters - Easts tricolours (play out of Randwick...)
Newcastle - Central Coast
Cronulla - Southern districts
Canberra - A regional NSW side somewhere?

EDIT: Meant to add that this would have been great for this year with CC and WA adding teams next year to prepare for NRL and Newcastle could then have a new feeder club of their own entirely (Somewhere in the Hunter perhaps? and Manly could do the same in say Gordon?)

lets be honest, this NSW Cup is a damn shambles.

There was little to fault with the old reserve grade pesidents cup systems.

The NYC and NSW Cups are shambolic in comparison.

The Central Coast Bears Junior Clubs will be called the "Central Coast Cubs" this will be used in the NSW Cup, SG Ball and Harold Matthews, Because NYC has to be identical to the NRL they will be fielding the Central Coast Bears in that comp.

My understanding was that if the CC Bears make a come back it'd work like this:

NRL: CCB's
NYC: CCB's
NSW Cup: NSB's
Matts & Ball: CC Cubs

If St George/Illawarra don't have a team in the NSW Cup, I take it their Junior sides, Matthew and Ball teams won't be in the competition. The Raiders junior teams can't compete because of a lack of a NSW Cup side so I would imagine the Dragons would be in the same boat.

As long as they play locally as it is a NSW endorsed comp they are fine

North Sydney and Central Coast would both have Junior Rep teams that would feed into the Central Coast Bears Under-20s.

My understanding is that if the Central Coast Bears are successful with NRL entry;
NRL; Central Coast Bears
NYC; Central Coast Bears
NSW Cup; North Sydney Bears
S.G.Ball; Central Coast Cubs North Sydney Bears
Matts; Central Coast Cubs North Sydney Bears

Just spoke with people at the Illawarra Steelers as the bye is now listed on the NSWRL website and they dont think the team will get off the ground this year as St George feel that if the Steelers have the money they should put it in to the JV instead and they need them to give them players from their top squad to be competitive. What a disappontment for Rugby League in general although the final vote is not till next week it is not looking good.

without hearing the other side of the story, it appears to be a very selfish act by St George, they should be reminded of amount of Illawarra Players it took to win that gf last year.

And the Steelers should be wary of how much $$$ St George have thrown at them to support their club and it's operations. It's a two way street.

The rumour doing the rounds at the moment is that 2011 will be in the Carlton League, whereas 2012 will be back in the NSW Cup as the Kingsgrove Colts. The Colts have applied for a position in the BRC with the aim of stepping up to the NSW Cup in 2012.
