Exactly, so the proximity of Widnes or St Helens to these big cities has zero relevance give the people of these large conurbations have no interest in travelling any distance to watch RL in Wigan or Leigh or Salford or St Helens or any other small town with excellent stadium facilities.
No reasons Cairns with its 139k population couldn't have a decent small sports stadium IF it had content that justified it.

Look at Leigh, second division club with 43k population yet have this facility, in comparison that park that NRL played at in Cairns was amateur.

This is delusional. Whether or not anyone outside the town is contributing directly, the fact is being in a major metropolitan area has huge economic benefits that allow for better facilities.
Not to mention these towns all have wealthy (relatively) professional sports teams while Cairns doesn't.

It's not even an apples to other-fruit comparison, let alone apples to apples.
Cairns is in the middle of nowhere and doesn't even play 2nd division League, how and why would it have a professional sports facilitity? Who would pay for or use it? Playing World Cup games there was a mistake, for what it's worth.

It doesn’t even have sand on the beach

Maybe that’s why the pommie backpackers are there in plagues.

Also worth noting that the English don't have state governments, they have local councils and divide the money on population. Large population = money directly to the local area. A small but nice stadium is a lot easier to sort out in smaller towns when there's no backlash from other people in the surrounding areas for not getting their own.

agreed...and its a far better venue to view the game. As a spectator Adelaide oval you are too far away from the action.

The fact that Hindmarsh Stadium is a rectangle is about the only thing going for it and it would deadest struggle to get 8k for a NRL game

Viewing configuration aside, Adelaide Oval has everything else going for it. It has an aura of being a venue that people want to go to and is a 2 minute walk from all the entertainment options in the city.

+ Roosters don't play in suburban cow paddocks.

Despite being an oval it's an absolutely top class facility. I have no doubt whatsoever a future Adelaide NRL club would achieve more at Adelaide Oval than any other venue.

We complain about the view at ANZ because Sydney is a Rugby League town and our biggest and best stadium should reflect that.
The NRL can cop an oval in AFL towns if it means the highest quality facilities and big crowds.
