Sorry, an english afl fan in perth's opinion on origin doesnt count.
If that is the case, then that would be a really poor indictment of Rugby League minds.
"RL Fans will start following AFL if they have 3 weeks without club NRL on TV."
Has to be the dumbest argument ever! You'd have to be pretty insecure about the fans of our game to believe that for one second.
What might be of more concern to NRL is that PI players would rather play for Tonga or Samoa than Qlnd or NSW if it was a proper 3 week rep period.
Thanks. I don't think there's a perfect solution to origin, just a 'least-bad' option. The second paragraph is the biggest problem or argument against it.
Doc came up with a decent compromise earlier. Have one round of the NRL split over three weeks. If you get to 18 teams, just have three NRL games per week with an Origin.
Essentially every club is only impacted by one game
The last definitive figures we have:
average match rating across the season in 2015 was 27,000. Warriors were hitting 150k every now and then but averaged around 90k, and non warriors games rating poorly
The grand final hit 140k, origin rated no higher than 113k. The ANZ test was the highest rating game in NZ at 272k.
We all know that the NRL currently has 17 teams. An odd number of teams is not ideal. However until team 18 comes in, the NRL needs to improve the draw during Origin, so that it is as fair as possible. Here are rounds 13, 16 and 19. Rounds where Origin players were not available.
Round 13
Dolphins v Dragons 26- 12
Eels v Cowboys 24-16
Warriors v Broncos 22-26
Rabbitohs v Raiders 26-33
Knights v Sea Eagles 28-18
Round 16
Cowboys v Panthers 27-23
Knights v Roosters 16-18
Eels v Sea Eagles 34- 4
Tigers v Storm 6-28
Sharks v Bulldogs 48-10
Round 19
Tigers v Sharks 12-36
Dragons v Raiders 26- 36
Eels v Warriors 10- 46
Rabbitohs v Bulldogs 32-36
Titans v Dolphins 21-23
Key takeaways:
* Eels played three games without Origin players. The most of any team.
* Panthers, Broncos, Storm, Titans and Roosters only played one game without Origin players.
* The remaining 11 teams- Raiders, Sharks, Rabbitohs, Warriors, Cowboys, Knights, Sea Eagles, Dolphins, Bulldogs, Tigers and Dragons all played two games without Origin players.
Draw wasn't kind to Parramatta, but to their credit, they did win 2 out of 3 games. That ain't bad...but still not a fair draw.
Eels weren't meant to have any Origin players though.
Nor were those sides that played 2 games
I'd rather we still had a bye and played short handed across this time
286 AFLNo nrl tv ratings reported yet on tv today. Afl and union fta were poor
Makes you wonder how a SOO game would be supported if one was taken over to nzEven at 27k per game. 200 games
is 5m viewers, decent numbers given the time difference
As a Penrith fan, you would know that Parramatta played in the grand final last year. So a team that finished runners up, in all likelihood would have a number of players considered for Origin selection.
I will blame cricket because its the main reason ratings are down atm , that & poor match selection from Ch 9 , Origin has had little affect otherwiseI guess if you just started following the NRL this year you might think this. It’s well documented that NRL ratings and crowds suffer during origin. Also ratings have absolutely suffered this year, no doubt you’ll blame the cricket but I don’t see how you can say ratings have remained the same because we can’t know that.
Why is it suicide? Fans apparently will tune out of the game because of a 3 week rep period but not after the 6 months off after the season. It’s bizarre logic.
The 3 week rep period would have wall to wall media coverage drowning everything else out even more than it does now. The idea that it would open the door to other competitions is ludicrous.
This is just a dumb appeal to authority. So anything the NRL does is instantly correct just because?
they'd be forgoing $90K"RL Fans will start following AFL if they have 3 weeks without club NRL on TV."

Agree, i think the death of representative weekends came when SOO didn't rate well on a Sunday. Another problem was SOO attracting all the best PI players, Unless players get paid equally for all rep games SOO will always attract the best players and the PI teams will field under strength teams and no one wants to see that.they'd be forgoing $90K
they may choose their state instead , meaning Pacifika might not be as effective
so why risk it
end of the year is the place for internationals .............end of
