How is it bait ?

Steve smith 90 innings 4665 runs @ 60.63 and 17 centuries
Kane williamson 103 innings 4648 runs @ 49.44 and 14 centuries
Joe root 98 innings 4594 runs @ 52.80 and 11 centuries
Virat kohli 90 innings 4209 runs @ 50.10 and 15 centuries

How is this bait
Because Smith's batting is ugly...

Boof basically just said you'll see two spinners and an all-rounder in Sydney.

So Cartwright/O'Keefe in, Maddinson/Bird out IMO.

I think what makes Smith so great - well one of many things - is that he's not very vulnerable at the start of his innings.

Ponting would fall over his front pad and be vulnerable to lbw or caught behind. Lara would be too frantic at the start of his innings when out of form.

But Smith just looks very at ease from the first ball.

Now how much of that is batting on roads in crickets 'age of batsmen' I don't know; but you have to give Smith more than his fair share or credit.

If he maintains his current pace for another 50 odd tests then you can't not put him alongside the names above.

What would help is a career defining series or two away from him, starting in India.

Smith has scored those 17 tons in his last 38 tests which is pretty amazing.

Re overall record (williamson vs smith), Smith had the luxury of going back to state cricket to work on the flaws in his game. Williamson started pretty slow but lack of depth in NZ meant he basically learnt at the top level. Both took a couple of years to get going. Since the start of 2013 Williamson has scored 11 tons and averaged 58, which is very good (38 tests). But I guess for comparrison in Smiths last 38 tests he has those 17 tons and averages over 70, which is just brilliant really.

Cracking delivery from Starc, that's more like it

Australians definitely overrate a lot of our players. Smith isn't one of them, he would be world class in any era. Since he really started playing as a batsman he's been an absolute freak and is comfortably the best batsman in the world right now.

You can knick him out if he attacks the ball hard before he has his trigger movement really moving smoothly. Possibly why he is arguably the worst of the "big four" at limited over cricket because he ideally needs time to get everything moving correctly

Once he is moving well he is tough to get out

still gonna take a hell of a collapse to lose it from here, especially on this pitch as the ball gets older
