Chester Pujara has faced 1164 balls this series. Ball hog.
Listening to ABC Grandstand, Ed Cowan lamenting the lack of red ball cricket being played in junior national championships... And they read out a stat about Pujara, when aged 12, scored a 300+ not out from 500-odd balls in a junior Indian tournament....

Indian cricket is so much more cut-throat than ours, as a function of population as much as anything, and you can see the results.

They just play the game right from the start. None of this "retire after thirty balls" stuff.

It's not one or the other, but the batting is the root of the problems.

Imagine being a bowler in this side? Knowing that, on any half decent wicket, batsmen with a brain will just be patient and tire you out, get to even a middling score in the low 300s...then you'll have to come out and face fire after the top order fails, then after having to save the blushes of the bats, you're out there again, 135 runs behind already with the opposition not needing to take a single risk to stay in control.

That takes its' toll and it's happening just about every test. I'd bet quite a lot that if we could somehow get this side scoring 400s, those bowling averages would come down in kind.

You still need to operate within the confines of the team. If these guys can’t do that, what’s the harm in trying someone else? Not talking about a complete overhaul, just a fresh body or two.

The aim here is winning, not being fair to people. It sucks that these guys don’t have more to bowl at, but it’s not about them.

Well is it purely tactics or is it a function of the wickets and the opposition?

Not trying to excuse it by any means, but like everything with Australian cricket right now, there's more than one problem here IMO. Bowling at the stumps on the Adelaide (which was OK, but flat) and MCG (apalling) decks is probably just going to increase the run rate. This one looks a road as well. Haze rarely attacks the stumps anyway, and Cummins is also more of a natural channel bowler.

It'd be better, and more interesting, to see that Stat broken up test by test.
Agreed, I really think some if our plans have been poor this series but we aren’t giving enough to the Indian Batsman.

Yeah, but then half the cricketing public howls about rest and rotation policies and all that. And how do you drop the guys who are doing their job, and then cling to Shaun Marsh?

Personally I would rest the quicks. They deserve it, and we've got a bunch of blokes who could come in and do a good job.

But at the same time, it won't change anything while we continue to fail with the bat. So is there any point, apart from not burning out our best bowlers? It won't win us more games rotating them.

Seriously the umpires are bizarre at times... not even close was it. To quote Long "that could have been anything" in that case he would have been right
And BS he should have overturned that

Get them for less than 400 and we've done well with the ball.

Whether we can get past 100 is a different story

Really? I thought it was clearly enough to uphold the onfield call. Ball was very close to the edge, and there was a spike.

Being between the frames is not the same as being totally off camera.

Heard a lot of that on the drive into the office today, some very interesting insights such as Indian kids apparently do not play much white ball Cricket.
