Racing chief Peter V’landys for ARL Commission post

NRL clubs and the state leagues could have representatives on an expanded ARL Commission by the end of the month with one of the club representatives expected to be Racing NSW chief executive Peter V’landys.

The new-look commission is expected to take shape after a peace deal was tabled to the Queensland Rugby League.

The move to appoint V’Landys is interesting in that he is considered someone who could be groomed to take over as ARL chairman in the post-John Grant era.

A reformed commission has been one of the primary goals of the clubs but talks stalled after the QRL insisted on having direct representation on any new body — chairman Bruce Hatcher was earmarked to be its representative.

However, it is understood a revised plan has been put to the QRL that would allow one of its board members to join the commission for 18 months before the position was reviewed.

Under the proposal, the clubs would be forbidden from having direct representation on the commission. Instead, the clubs would nominate potential appointments before the list was whittled down.

The final two club nominations would require the support of 75 per cent of the club chairs. Besides V’Landy’s, several names have been mentioned including former Queensland premier Anna Bligh, former News Corp chief executive John Hartigan, Harvey Norman chief executive Katie Page, and Newcastle board member and former ARL chief John Quayle. It is understood once the clubs and states have agreed on the way forward, they would need to call a meeting to confirm the change to the constitution. They would then be in position to begin the search for potential appointments before appointments are finalised, potentially before the end of June.

While Hatcher is expected to be the QRL appointment, NSW Rugby League chairman doctor George Peponis will represent his body.

The reformed commission would be made up of nine representatives — five independents, two state representatives and two club representatives.

The commission has been operating with only six representatives following the resignation of Jeremy Sutcliffe and Graeme Samuel.

I don't like this, but I can live with it.

In my mind, the greatest advantage of having the commission completely independent and the clubs having no say over the commissioners, is that it protects the clubs from themselves.

The self interest from the clubs and state leagues in the past have held this game back. The fact that commissioners currently don't have to answer to them protects them from club agenda.

If the clubs are insistent on appointing commissioners, they must take more responsibility over their responsibilities to the game. No more declining to participate in the World Club Series, no sending weak teams to the Nines, no forbidding of players to participate in representative matches, no more hand outs fro the NRL to keep them afloat, etc etc.

If they want power, they need to ramp up their responsibilities.

Every time an ARLC job opens up (and before regular list is trotted out), he is always "next in line" for some reason.

I hope the nswrl change there rules to become actually independent. As it stands now George peponis is on the bulldogs board as well as nswrl boss. And now potentially on the Arlc. As well as the clubs getting 2 more positions on the Arlc. I hope that issue is what is stopping qld from agreeing with changes. With nsw having 10/11 (Canberra) clubs and a clear majority in club land, 75% becomes quite easy to get. So 5 will be independent, 2 club appointed, and 1 each from qrl and nswrl. 9 in total.
I can't see how this will help the nrl be independent. It just puts self interested parties at the table.

I want to know which issues demand a simple majority and which require an absolute majority...

The 5/9 independent Commissioners can win any simple majority vote if they stick together, but if any issue demands 6 or 7 out of 9 (maybe expansion or club funding) they conflicts of interest for the 4 club lackys will be way too f*cking much

Yes I to am worried about how decisions are voted on as well with the new structure. But I'm more worried with the undermining. Dib/Politis will have a straight line to a few people on the board. It doesn't matter if decisions are made for the good of the game or not. Like what's been happening if clubs strategically leak to the media there agenda, it doesn't matter what decision gets made. Greenberg at the time was wanted in the CEO role by clubs but now the clubs aren't getting what they want and they want him gone. This will probably happen to the new commissioners in a few years. I also hope that any agreement on the structure comes with clauses that the states/clubs can't complain of no input. Or leak to the media there displeasure.

Read this morning that the RLPA wanted to include contra in the games revenue as part of a revenue share deal. It also reported that cash component of the new rights deal was $1.61bn. I don't believe that included NZ rights.

Yeah I realize that. That's why I alluded to the fact that qld were currently stopping the changes going through. Nswrl just agree with the clubs so Any decision needs qlds ok because once the new structure gets implemented the veto right disappear.

Apart from the media making this issue bigger than it is, all that's happened is the nrl have put a low ball offer to the Rlpa and the Rlpa have returned serve with a high ball offer. It's called negotiations. Can't wait for next week when the nrl and players sit down and iron out the issues.

I'm sure you knew this, but others might not. But the reason that is is because the NSWRL board is appointed by the NSW NRL clubs. So essentially, Sydney NRL clubs control the state governing body.

What should be a further worry with that is is that essentially, the Sydney NRL clubs have direct influence over country RL in NSW. Which they've already shown they're happy to neglect apart from a couple.

I can't fathom how people can't see that the (Sydney) clubs having more power over the ARLC (I.e the whole country) is a conflict for the games growth. The clubs, other than News Ltd, have been the biggest obstacle for expansion and growth in this country.
