How can I "conveniently ignore" data thst doesn't exist?

If you have data on how many people from Melbourne watch the Storm via PTV then provide it.

I got my data from Wookie's site. He doesn't have a metro breakdown of PTV ratings. If he doesn't have it then no one does.

Ok the last time we got a breakdown of the Foxtel metro ratings - the only year in fact - was 2017.

In that season:

The Melbourne city average for NRL matches on Foxtel was 14,000 when the national average was 324,000 -it peaked at 52,000 for ANZAC day v Warriors. The Melbourne city FTA average at the time was 21,000 - peaked at 50,000 (R2 v Broncos).

Make of that what you will, if anything.

Thank you for providing this data.

It confirms my theory that Melbourne does not have a lot of active rugby league fans. I'd be surprised if Perth was any different.

Pre Kayo and 6 years ago.
What makes you think there's been a huge increase in people watching NRL in Adelaide, Melbourne and Perth since Kayo entered the market?

colly posted the NRL Pay TV ratings for Perth in 2017. They were a lousy 5k. Even the AwFuL ratings in Perth were terrible.

Sat Pay tv figures
Sat STV #NRL #FoxLeague #NRLStormCowboys National 265k: Metro 183k (Syd 104k Mel 19k Bri 55k Ade 1k Per 5k)

Sat STV #NRL #FoxLeague #NRLSharksTigers National 254k: Metro 180k (Syd 118k Mel 7k Bri 47k Ade 2k Per 5k)

Easily beat AFL
Sat STV #AFL #FoxFooty #AFLTigersSwans
National 195k: Metro 153k (Syd 37k Mel 70k Bri 13k Ade 18k Per 16k)
Sat STV #AFL #FoxFooty #AFLPowerLions National 198k: Metro 162k (Syd 16k Mel 87k Bri 13k Ade 27k Per 19k)

14k viewers in melb on fox

wow it’s worse than we thought

I'd like to see how Maxipad tries to spin it. He's been arguing for weeks that there might be a large audience in Perth watching NRL on Kayo.

Hence why in my opinion we will have another club in Queensland or NZ.2 before Perth

I cannot see Foxtel wanting a team in Perth if the ratings are so low.

What do you think the ratings in Melbourne would have been like if the Storm didn't exist? Definitely <10k, maybe even less than 5k, are probably fair estimates no? What do you think they'll be in 2027? Probably a fair bit more than 14k unless something goes very wrong right?! And in 2037? That's called growth. Genuine, honest-to-goodness, expansion. Was that not the goal here?

A significant portion of those people, probably even a majority, are totally new to the sport as well. They likely wouldn't have any interest in the sport or the NRL at all if it wasn't for the Storm.

In the 90s people would have said you were mad if you'd said that a RL team was capable of averaging 35k viewers and 20k attendees a season in Melbourne, hell you'd have almost certainly been amongst them. Those numbers are actually a hell of an achievement considering the circumstances.

The only way you'll see any significant growth in RL in places like WA, SA, parts of NZ to a lesser extent, etc, in the modern world is with a professional product to drive publicity and interest. In this case that requires local NRL clubs. And yeah those clubs will likely start from relatively humble beginnings, but even redwoods start as tiny seeds.

Isn't spreading the sport to people who have little to no opportunity to engage with it a laudable goal as well?

Nailed it.

To think that a region, which our game has largely ignored for its entire history, should just continue being ignored "because they will never be RL fans" is probably the most reductive argument around.

Agreed,...
but!!!!

Why dont we have another 3-4 teams in Victoria? they have the population for it to rival Sydney, and we have 9 teams there alone

Well first you would have to accept that 9 teams is the optimum number for the population of Sydney.

Does anyone really think it is? Doubtful. It's just one of those quirks of history that we all accept can't be now changed.

Secondly, you would have to believe that there are RL fans in Melbourne not being catered for by the Storm.

Lastly, if our game does grow outside of Sydney and Brisbane in any meaningful way (also doubtful) there will likely be another team in Melbourne one day(maybe in 2045 or so)

Yeah all good, so if we can only cater for 1 Melbourne team in a population of say 5 mil who aren't really RL fans, hows 2.5 mil in perth gonna get one club, I'd say the maths would need to see perth reach 5 million before its a reality, again there's no reason why perth doesn't get one, but how are we saying Melbourne only get one in 5 million, but cant have 9 like Sydney

The problem lies in your baseline that 9 teams in Sydney is the optimum number for a city that size. It isn't, realistically it should be more like 2, maybe 3.

Melbourne was around 3M when the Storm were founded.

Regardless our game is done, if we can only expand to cities greater then 5M+

No I haven't. Why do you consistently lie about what people say. I've been arguing that you can't use ch9 ratings as proof that they would hold no value for Foxtel, while your argument was that ch9 is all you had so therefore it should apply across everything.

Mate in the 90s we had more Sydney teams, way more, not sure where you're getting your 2-3 Sydney clubs analogy, maybe a crappy A-league comp, but if you're going to use a somewhat similar successful model, like AFL or NRL then 9 is fine in the heartland city in this part of the world, anyways seems like there's always some excuse to justify only one team in Melbourne

Fact is storm are worth basically nothing for broadcasters

and that’s with one of the most successful nrl teams in history

Perth will be of similar value

and like Melbourne offer little to no juniors

dots in a map is a stupid strategy
Then its another 3 Brisbane teams for the next 3 licences, hey?

Actually I'll be 2 in brissy, the firedicks, jets and a 3rd QLD team in Cairns, representing the remainder of all of the southern hemisphere, that don't have a team yet
