Brisbane Tigers make their bid to be 18th team

The clock is ticking for them to make a decision.

If we assume a 2028 debut season for team 18 (first year of new TV deals), with a 2-year lead-in time that's early 2026 at the latest to announce the successful bid.

Two and a half years, tops, to call for bids, assess bids & announce a winner... Ideally sooner than early 2024 if we wanna give the team a good chance to build a squad.
They could do that all within 6-12 months if they wanted to, and we're assuming that they actually intend to have an open bidding process, and that that process won't be a sham.

Given their MO I'd be very surprised if this administration didn't already have a good idea of what they'd like to do. At that point it's just a question of lining things up so it comes to fruition in good time.

For min3, it's highly likely the ARLC will take the weak option and admit BRI3/QLD5 to the comp as team 18.

It will reinforce that our game isn't national and a two state sport. It will add no new fans, no new talent pool and no new corporate sponsorship.

It will be a typically short sighted decision making that our great game is known for.

Yes and no. It won't attract money from Adelaide and Perth, but it will lead to rugby league generating more revenue from SEQ's corporate sector. That's less money available for our more cashed up competitor that is investing heavily in the region.

The Dolphins and Broncos have no trouble attracting sponsors and are well ahead of the other clubs on this front. There's more than enough room for a third club.

I'm probably in the minority on League Unlimited, but I think the game will benefit from adding the Brisbane Tigers as the 18th team. I'll explain why.

  • The Brisbane Tigers will probably generate more revenue from sponsorship and corporate hospitality than the Dolphins.

Their close proximity to the CBD and junior clubs in Logan's eastern suburb outskirts will appeal to the corporate sector. Plenty of housing estates are set to be built along this corridor in Logan and are attracting young families from all over Australia. It's one of the reasons AwFuL has targeted the eastern suburbs of Logan. They want to convert the next generation into fumbleballers.
  • Brisbane and SEQ is a vitally important region for our game and cannot be taken for granted.

AwFuL has invested a lot of money on developing their game in the region. They plan on increasing their marketshare in Logan and Ipswich because they know both cities are growing rapidly and are going to get much bigger and richer over the upcoming decades.

Our game cannot afford to lose marketshare in Ipswich and Logan to fumbleball. David Manson wrote an article detailing the amount of juniors from Logan that have gone on to play for Queensland, Australia and even Great Britain. It's more than any other city in Australia. If we neglect these two great rugby league cities then AwFuL will pounce. State of Origin cannot afford to lose these great rugby league cities. The game will be f**ked without the money it generates from Origin. V'landys cited the need to keep rugby league strong in Brisbane as a reason for adding the Dolphins.
  • Brisbane has been attracting high levels of interatate migrants from NSW and Vic for about 40 years. It's not slowing down, either. It's the most rapidly growing city in the country because it offers cheaper real estate than Melbourne and Sydney and is a more liveable city. It's important we increase the game's profile in this region to entice interstate migrants to sign their kids up to play rugby league.

The best beaches in the country are just down the road on the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast. The Southern Moreton Bay Islands are truly unique and draw a lot of tourists from Brisbane on weekends because of its relaxed atmosphere.

SEQ has more parkland, green spaces, wildlife and recreational activities on offer than Sydney and Melbourne. It's more family friendly than Sydney and Melbourne.

Brisbane is arguably the best place in Australia to live during the winter months. The weather is dry and sunny. Compare that to Perth which is cold and wet at this time of the year. Sydney is cooler and wetter than. Melbourne has arguably the most miserable winters in the country. Victorians flock to the Gold Coast in winter for a holiday. Graduates from NSW choose the Gold Coast over Sydney for schoolies. If you live in Brisbane you can do this every weekend.

Brisbane's climate is perfect for rugby league.

Let's run the Brisbane Lions, Queensland Reds and Brisbane Roar into the ground!

CBA sorted
Expansion will be next priority after Vegas
That'd be great.

How far out from the rights deal expiry do TV rights usually get negotiated? That's a big part of the puzzle too.. and it might give us some indication of timeline.

I don’t think it matters, once theyve lined up the 18th team, they can renegotiate and include the current years, thus basically extending the current contract on a higher rate, they gotta sort out the 18th team first tho, no going to the table offering the same amount of product

Tv deal should be sorted next year
If they wanted to they.l could fund team 18 themselves for a few years until 2028 comes around and a new deal starts

or delay the new team till 2028 or sell the rights to existing networks (not ideal they would pay unders)

from the hints in the articles so far next year I think the new team gets announced

they could even announce both 18 and 19 for entry at different dates

Yeh as long as they don’t extend that’s ok too

Does anyone know how long the WT have a licence to operate as the tigers in the NRL?
For example, can East Brisbane enter a team in the NRL called the Brisbane Tigers? How does it work.

Well since this IS the Brisbane Tigers thread, probably means they aren't getting either till the ARLC want to take bids for licence no.20
how long have perth, bears and orcas bids been around for? add these guys to that long line, no one is ever going to put another team in SEQ for another decade at minimum, ESPECIALLY since bronx are screaming up high ontop of that ladder

They cannot, as the tigers are already an entity in the NRL, brisbane tigers need to change to another mascot/name... firehawks perhaps?
BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!

That's what I was told, that WT for example will always be the tigers unless their licence was revoked...geez hope that doesn't happen to my club even after 2 wooden spoons.

I could be wrong, but I think the clubs NRL club licence agreements are set to expire in October. I don't know if they've been renewed.

Nothing wrong with knowing what you want to do, but the ends doesn't justify the means and being as transparent as possible is always the best policy in these things.

If they have a good idea of what they want to do they'd be best to make that as clear as possible to all involved. Towing people along just burns bridges.

Outside of very extreme circumstances, there's no chance that the NRL would refuse to renew any of the teams licenses.

This is the biggest collection of irrelevant bullshit I've seen posted on this topic.

"It's cold in Melbourne, therefore there should be a new team in Brisbane".

By the way in terms of real facts, outside the pandemic blip, QLD and Brisbane haven't been the fastest growing anything since the 80s.

Ipswich and Logan would probably have a higher proportion of Broncos/NRL fans than the inner suburbs of Brisbane (where Broncos HQ is) as well. People will follow NRL because they like it and have enough exposure to it, they don't need a professional team to exist 5 minutes away from their house.

That's the thing.

Those areas already have a NRL team, the biggest and most well supported one in the competition!

The only point of difference between the Broncos and Easts would be the location of there pokie dens.

There appeal would be to the niche of Brisbane fans who don't support the Broncos, and don't support the other 3 QLD teams, and didn't support any of the Tigers BRL rivals.

Hardly seems like a pressing concern to cater for this group.

Mate I've been told since I wrote that post that all current clubs have the sole right to their name and logo indefinitely. The only way they would lose it, say the term "Tigers or Wests Tigers" is if they had their licence revoked for some reason or they folded or sold their licence and agreed to the name change. In that case it would have to be approved by the NRL anyway.
SO....
What I don't know, in inlight of what I just said, does that apply to areas such as Brisbane Broncos, Brisbane River Sewer Rats etc. In the AFL you have Melbourne Demons and North Melbourne Kangaroos.
So is my source slightly off, can you have more than one City name?
