Brisbane3 - What is needed to make it a successful bid?

Would the Qlnd govt have appetite to spend $300-500mill on this after the Olympics are done and dusted?

Surely if they were going to build a new stadium for a SW Brisbane team it would be in Ipswich, not a stones throw from Suncorp at Easts?

They wouldn't spend money on Langlands unless they specifically want an inner city mid sized stadium which I think we need by the way. Even then Langlands is one of many options including Ballymore, the showgrounds, Perry Park.

If a Western Corridor team gets the nod in the future you'd have to imagine them having their own 20-25k stadium at Ipswich with Broncos and Dolphins derbies at Suncorp.

There were two bids that went up against the Dolphins a few years back.

Brisbane Jets which was a joint venture between the Brisbane Bombers and Ipswich Jets (corporate money meeting an established RL club with pathways)

And the Brisbane Tigers branded as the Brisbane Firehawks due to the Tiger brand already existing in the NRL.

These two bids attempted a last minute merger to defeat the stronger Dolphins bid but they couldn't agree to terms (probably a bit rushed for such negotiations to be successful).

The NRL have been clear that they don't want to have teams overlapping fan bases too much in SEQ (not repeating what the game has in Sydney) hence Dolphins North, Broncos Central, Titans South. The NRL have also indicated for more that a decade now that they'd like a team in the west which, now that we have the Dolphins would complete the puzzle in SEQ.

Ipswich are the local team and brand that resonate out that way, they have an established QRL team with a decent pathway system in place (strong RL area). They just don't have the sort of money to bid for an NRL licence. Leagues club is a tiny old pub in Ipswich.

Tigers are the third wealthiest RL club in Brisbane behind the Broncos and Dolphins and certainly do have the money to make a successful NRL bid, however, they are an inner city club (overlapping the Broncos) and their Tiger brand can't be used (Firehawks was a dog shit brand that was super unpopular).

If these two can successfully work out a marriage, they would instantly tick all the NRL's boxes. Ipswich council had even approved a 20k stadium if the Jets won the bid and were in the process of seeking additional funding for it from the State and Federal Governments.

For what it's worth, I don't think we should be looking at this option until 2032 at the earliest though. Give the market and Dolphins a chance to adjust.
Hijacking this and adding my personal opinion, hope you don't mind.

Easts Tigers and Ipswich Jets should both be in the NRL but stay as separate clubs as they appeal to very different demographics. They are both proud clubs with their own unique histories and I think if the Dolphins have shown us anything it's that tradition resonates with new & existing fans. A merger and name/colour changes would negate a lot of the goodwill.

Directly related to this, the NRL needs to de-merge Wests Tigers for the good of the game. Keep the Wests Magpies brand/history in the NRL, keep Balmain alive in the lower levels and promote Easts Tigers.

Magpies fans get their proud jersey and club back and can fully commit to Campbelltown, old Balmain fans can see the Brisbane Tigers run out in the classic black and gold jersey again. No more failed merger where they're seeminly ashamed of their history and cannot commit to a single homeground or fanbase.

Med-long term I also feel it's imperitive for QLD to have more representation in the NRL if they move to a national reserve grade mirroring the NRL and bypass the QLD Cup. Fewer local semi-pro clubs = restricted player opportunities = risk killing the cash cow that is SoO.

Ship has sailed on tigers demerger. Magpies were lucky to get run in NRL in any capacity; tiny fan base & always a poor performer. Probably could say the same about Balmain the 90's. Wests tigers have existed for a quarter of a century, so you'd be throwing out young fans for old ones. Never a good idea.

Never too late to fix a mistake, ask Bears fans...
Especially when the merger has been unsuccessful for so long. At some point the band-aid needs to be ripped off.

West tigers have cultivated a fanbase in the past 25 years more numerous than whichever Balmain & magpies supporters remain, plus they'll live longer. Getting rid of Glebe was a mistake but we can't fix that..
