Watched it live. My understanding was that Gus said 400k won't be enough for a top quality winger.

..To wish Gus said 'Goodluck filling a team if a you pay a winger that'
I've watched this show on 9's site and the actual words of Gould (when $400k was suggested) were "that won't get to first base". Which really could mean anything but I take it as suggesting that the person who would pay a winger $400k would have a lot of trouble getting a balanced team under the cap.

The conversation leading up to this had been around Corey Oates wanting to switch to the forwards because he felt he could not command $400k as a winger. Semi Radradra and his worth was also mentioned. Of course Semi has now left the sport for more money.

After that was a discussion over where you would start when building a team. To me that showed the importance of certain positions and wing wasn't mention

Semi was different though. He had speed to go with power Mansour doesn't. Oates an Origin rep wants that sort of money but is moving to backrow to get it.

Well if Tamou is making 800k then Radradra has gotta be worth that.

;)

I am curious how those people that think he, Merrin and Maloney all get that much. Think we fit our 30man squad under the $9.4m salary cap.. Makes me laugh

Im curious how you think Tamou is barely on above the average wage and we're forced to lose 6+ contracted players in a season.

~10 players in our top 30 would be minimum wage. 20 players divided by $8.4m gives an average of $420k. Of which apparently Mansour and DWZ would be nowhere near. Nor should our young blokes who are yet to be rep players or veteran first graders.

When you lose the likes of Moylan, Cartwright, TMM, Hiku, Rein and Latu from your top 25 to sign 1 top 25 player. And fill the rest of your squad with minimum wage signings... and are still shedding players. Its pretty obvious the rep signings are getting the big dollars, and that Cleary will too IF he re-signs.

The figure bandied about in the press was $3m over 4 seasons. Certainly if true this is elite money for a prop and I can only concur that he didn't earn it last year, but he's heading in the right direction this year.

TMM and Rein would have been on the minimum or very close to it themselves. Latu not much more.

Also we were apparently like most teams working toward a $10m cap. Hopeful of it anyway.

Quite simple MX really. Each time we re-sign someone their pay goes up meaning we need to find savings.

CHN, Edwards and May were part time players last year.. All re-signed on improved deals and needed a spot in the roster. So 3 players must go out for them to come in. 3 minimum wage players wouldn't work as you need the extra money towards the cap

I’ll take a stab at the entire roster

Edwards - 300k
Mansour - 300k
Whare - 350k
Blake - 250k
DWZ - 300k
Maloney - 800k
Cleary 250k
Merrin - 750k
CHN - 200k
Yeo - 350k
Tamou - 700k
Wallace - 400k
RCG - 350k
JFH - 250k
Kikau - 250k
Peachey - 350k
Mckendry - 250k
Leota - 150k
Browne - 200k
May - 250k
Egan - 150k
Luai - 150k
Katoa - 125k
Waddell - 100k
Hethrington - 100k
Ellis 100k
Liu-toso - 100k
Jed Cartwright - 150k
Chricton - 100k
Phillips - 125k

Pure guesswork that totals out at 8.3m

Given we lost Cartwright at 500k

Obviously it’s just shits & giggles but I don’t think it’s a stretch to think Tamou could be getting $700-800k

Any number you guys think is out by a long way?

Those 3 guys would also be well below the average wage. CHN and May arent even top 17 certainties.

You make it xound like these guys would be $400k players after suggesting Tamou is only $450k.

CHN, May, Edwards wouldn't be on much surely.

No MX. I said on the books for $450k... Not every player on our books would get a new car every year etc. Easily add up another $200k to that deal

Thanks for the link mate, but I'm not getting any of that from his comments. "Some wingers are worth more" .... yeah OK. "That won't get you to first base"(the suggested 400k), ie- he believes Mansour to be worth more than that.
So this "journalist" thinks how can I use this to shit on Penrith? How about something like- "Gould rubbishes the claim that Mansour is worth 400k" That'll get their insecure ,gullible fans all worked up. Job well done.

Edit- and while I'm here, the reason our cap is so tight is the fact that there are very few in the squad on minimum wage, not because of the imagined huge contracts of a few.

Agree on the Gould comments, must admit I misread them.

Not so sure about that

I reckon there’d be 10 guys on or near minimum
