Spot on. What has to be reiterated is the platform they set for Mark Taylor too. AB was a warrior on and off the field. No better leader for that time in our cricket history in my opinion.

Agree with all this. Whilst it is 99% unlikely, just to be sure I will put it on record, I never had a problem with the AB/Simmo regime. I lived through it. I have NEVER forgotten the work of AB in that transition period nor will any true cricket fan supporting Australia. I don't think anyone in this thread (well from what I've read) can be labelled as forgetting any of the work of either during that time.

I simply suggested that Tim Zoehrer, in my opinion, wasn't a "numptie" ;-) Enjoyed the discourse here. Thanks hineyrulz. Outside the Parramatta side of things, we will get on well my friend. Cheers.

Good stuff mate , i was probably a bit hard on Ziggy he maybe wasn't a Numpty but his attitude is what finished his career. Phillips,Ritchie and Mo Mathews also were far more talented than the guys who took their place but for whatever reason they didn't fit in AB's and Simmos team dynamic. While we may have been shit back then it is still my favourite era for watching cricket. Every win was cherished and something to be remembered.

Complete package? He was a decent keeper and a very good batsmen but if he had been your run of the mill batsmen keeping wise he would have been dropped early on I'd say.

Why? Because Haddin has looked "fragile" himself for a while now. He is starting to look as if he is losing his eye sight. You wouldn't know this bloke is the VC though, they do well to keep him out of the media. Ponting and Hussey seem to front up a lot for media duties.

Regarding Wade I don't really see him as a genuine test player but more a one day player.
Neville hasn't really shown much so far.I actually think he's been out of his depth in the bbl comp but that form of the game is nothing to really go by.

Nevill is no good in short versions of the game but averaging near 50 with the bat (60 something this year) and having the best dismissals per game out of the keepers in the shield this year isnt too bad.

only played about 16-18 first class matches but he's definately been playing very well in the shield, scoring his runs in difficult circumstances as well with how shit our top order has been playing.

AB should be remembered as a leader not a captain. He did more than place fields.

Simmo is the one I feel gets forgotten about. Do the basics. Such a simple attitude.

This is more than likely correct. I still believe is misinterpreted though it matters nothing as the powers to be didn't like it and went with Healy. Let's be honest, it wasn't that bad a decision was it? ;-) I loved Healy. I just thought Tim Zoehrer was a great keeper back in the day who talent wise as a keeper was better than the ten Tests he played.

Tough one to nominate my favourite era to watch cricket (love Warnie - still feel it's as close I will get to watching a guy who will be talked about like Bradman is today when I'm gone) though the era we are discussing is perhaps the most rewarding. AB, brilliantly illustrated in Steve Waugh's War and Peace novel, was a brilliant captain/player who helped transform our side and with the fortunes of us as a cricketing nation with Simmo.

I first starting watching cricket in the 80's so i may be biased, i watched test cricket for nearly 3 years before we finally jagged a win. That win was as almost as big as watching the might Eels win the GF in 86. The game is not the same, no characters in the game anymore and far to many Victorians.
