Hayne needs to get an education

Well the media have reported it in an odd light - as if teams are falling over themselves to sign him. The presser was a laugh. Set up by Haynes management with Telstra slogans and a few toadies clapping for effect.

But he's basically got a pre season contract for reserve grade.

It's a start.

If he gets cut surely he returns.

The Niners have another rugby/discus thrower on their practice squad who's never played American Football before either

THE San Francisco 49ers have officially announced they have signed Jarryd Hayne to a three-year contract.
The 49ers posted the news on their website and social media accounts today.
Interestingly, the 49ers opted against signing Hayne to a futures contract and instead offered him a multi-year deal as an undrafted free agent. NFL rules stipulate undrafted free agents must initially sign three-year contracts.
In announcing his decision yesterday, Hayne indicated he had been given guaranteed payment of $100,000, covering 15-20 weeks with the team. It was a deal that surprised US sports writers and which rival teams Detroit and Seattle were unwilling to match.
Futures contracts are usually offered to fringe players whom franchises think might compete for a roster spot during the pre-season. They are usually modest in value and are little more than a foot in the door of a prospective NFL career.
Hayne’s rookie deal is a step up from a futures contract and although it still offers him minimal guarantees, it at least indicates San Francisco is genuinely keen to pursue Hayne’s development as an NFL player, rather than take a short-term gamble.
The 49ers have form in this area: They are headed into the third year of an experiment to turn British rugby player and Olympic discus thrower Lawrence Okoye into an NFL defensive linesman.

Yeah they signed Lawrence Okoye in 2013, a British Olympic discuss thrower with great raw tools with the intention of converting him to DL. He got injured and went to injured reserve, then he was cut and then signed to the Practice Squad where he currently is now. They don't mind trying these transformation projects however they've yet to receive much benefit

Just say Jarryd makes it, and no-one hopes he does more than I, does he have to keep getting a mention in a Rugby League forum

And those scouts have seen something completely different to what you've seen in Hayne, given multiple clubs were offering him a deal while you believed him to be terrible.

I don't think NFL clubs partake in wasting their time and money on people who have no chance.

Their population is well over 300 million actually, and China and India have populations over 1 billion. Yet all 3 of them get their asses kicked by us in plenty of sports and not a one of them can hold a candle to the tiny island nation of Jamaica in producing athletes. What is your point?

You think Hayne is paying his own contract? The money which he listed as a primary reason for signing with the 49ers is fake eh? Why exactly do you think that?

Yes yes NFL players are all superhuman freaks that could be winning gold medals at the olympics or curing cancer with their 150 IQs but choose to play NFL. No mere mortal like Hayne could hold a candle to them

His combine stats (those things that you apparently watch every year. Do you honestly? Because most people who actually matter really don't put any weight into them) put him in the elite class of rookies. That is a fact. Multiple NFL scouts who unquestionably know more about the game than you do see something in him, enough to offer a 3 year contract and an (albeit small) guaranteed salary while he completes his pre-season training.

The only thing standing in Hayne's way of success is his age. Had he had the means to go across at 21 he'd have had a long career in the NFL, as would a dozen other players from the NRL if they'd done the same.

Getting 3 years on a practice team means a lot of hard work.If he makes it into the starting squad, which is highly unlikely,I'll be happy for him and I'll be watching him with anticipation like everyone else.

In regards to Hayne paying that money out of his own pocket, and why do I think that?

You never know,to save face for Hayne, his management might have suggested that he does pay his own way.

Imagine the continual embarrassment and jibes he would have got if he headed back without a result...you know what the media and the public are like.

Also, think hard and long, why would San Fran all of a sudden, pay an untried rugby player $100k right off the bat?

They might have just said "yea, you can come on our practice squad, but were not paying you to promote yourself"

And come on Danish,it's only an opinion...remember,no matter how differing, nor how stupendous,or just plain nonsensical, thats all it is..an opinion.;-)

P.S.: When the 1st time Hayne gets the ball and runs it up in his first big game, there will be a collective sphincter clinching when he gets hit.

Nick, why would any RL fan want to see a "future Greg Inglis" leave the NRL and go to the NFL? What possible benefit is it to the sport of rugby league? Its a massive detriment to lose players of Hayne's calibre. For what - bragging rights about how RL produces great athletes?

In the "Off Topic" or "Other Sports" threads I presume.

But you know that will not be the case.If he makes it into a starting squad, you'll be hearing his fecking name from all quarters.

As he is a former rugby league player, I am guessing he will get mentioned in a rugby league forum.
Those mentions will increase when he does something newsworthy, like sign a contract, make a cut etc.
Just like when a former rugby league player gets charged with drug trafficking, it's likely to be mentioned on a rugby league forum.
Former rugby league player quits AFL to join rugby Union, again will probably get a mention in a rugby league forum.
It's a pretty easy concept to understand.

This might end up as great publicity for rugby league in the USA, but they have to learn that there are two codes first. At the moment it's actually great publicity for rugby union because he is being promoted as a rugby star.

Because he is a present Jarryd Hayne.

Doesn't matter if RL loses these nomads,as there are others replacing them. The sport has paid them, and they gave entertained.Time to move on.

Never heard of those players before...

On Hayne, is it really that impossible for him to make an NFL team as a punt returner (and probably as a punter too)? I simply can't see how the skills he has learnt as a Rugby League player couldn't transition to those positions.

Sure he might struggle to make it as a running back but that has nothing to do with inferior athletic ability. The only reason he couldn't make it as a running back would be because he wasn't able to pick up the technical side of the position.

I've read some dumb things, but a bloke announcing he's being paid, but actually paying himself?
That's no risk of ever being exposed.:roll:

It would be a massive determent to the NRL, but purely selfish reasons, because im a massive NFL fan and i want to see it. Id have love to see GI go over there when he was 18, he'd have been a pretty f**king great WR imo, but this isnt me as a RL fan, this is me as a sports fan.

His whole venture is dumb.
He is the only bloke in Australia who wants to try NFL.
I am sure no other rugby league player wants to waste his time at a sport that does not suit, or in fact he has not grown up with.
And this is the problem.
Not only the only bloke, but possibly the only one capable.

We have our sport, the yanks have theirs, never the twain shall meet.

Canard,
"And to say that Hayne's contract is coming out of his own wage is the most bizarre post Ive seen on this forum (Oikee included)."

Wait until the depths of winter, around origin time. I think i can take bizarre to a whole new level.

Shouldn't this be in another section? Considering some of the items that get moved, I'm stunned this is still here.

He is gone... Time to move on.
