And PR, the Kangaroos V Lions in Newcastle would be an absolute sell-out! (33,000 plus extra seating for sure) I live in Newcastle . It would certainly sell out! However we have poor administrators taking poor advice and not treating the Australian public to such a match!

Why don't you have the courage to say that it would sell out in Sydney if you think there is so much demand for this from the general sporting public?

It would absolutely sell out the new Parramatta stadium. Just not big enough in my view! Remembering the most suitable stadium would have been the SFS which is not available. And Newcastle, being the 2nd largest populated city in NSW is a great location for such a test. So I don't understand the issue with Newcastle hosting it?!

I don't have an issue if Newcastle were to host it and I agree that it would sell-out. What is interesting though is that you most likely chose that venue knowing full-well that it wouldn't sell out in Sydney. Newcastle is a great city and an amazing RL heartland, but if GB v Aus is resorting to selling out regional centres rather than capital cities then it disproves the point that you are trying to make that it is a major attraction that the general sporting public are clammering for.

Given the NRL's inability to break even at a sold out Mount Smart for last years game against Tonga it does make you wonder how many seats they need to sell to make Kangaroo games financially viable?? Clearly its more than 25k, and I am guessing GB would expect a much bigger slice of the pie than the Tongans did. The NRL has created a rod for its own back by paying SOO players so much and then having to match it for test payments to try and show Internationals are on par with Origin. Couple that with its inability to have a steady calendar to attract sponsors and TV value for Kangaroo games and they have right royally fcked it up!

No it's does not disprove any point. Newcastle happens to be NSW's 2nd largest city. Just like rugby league tests are given to Old Trafford Manchester instead of London. Both Newcastle and Manchester are major cIties and are well and truelly fine to host such test matches. The bottom line being that the ARL have erred in stating the Kangaroos v LIONS would not be feasible. Proactive and decent sports marketing suggests that such a test match would be a win/win both crowd and tv ratings wise. But this is not to be! The mistake has been made!

Yes it is NSW's second largest city but I don't know why you compare it to Manchester. Greater Manchester has a population of 2.5 million and two of the largest and most iconic football clubs and stadia in the world, Newcastle is awesome but it is a regional centre with a population of 0.5 million - you are not comparing apples with apples.

If it truly were the much sough-after event that you claim why would it not be played at ANZ like the pinnacle in other rectangular sports is when visiting NSW?

Also, on feasability of the test are you privy to the financial estimates prepared by the NRL of what a one-off test match played against GB would cost vs earn? To make these claims I assume you have access to these documents. Could you please share them?

Was it confirmed that the game didn’t break even? I thought it was just minimal profit even with the Aussies taking a huge pay cut.

There is a disdain for ANZ stadium . It is not regarded as a great venue. The new Parramatta stadium had it been 45000 capacity would also have sold out. I DID MENTION THE SFS!? it's not in use. The Kangaroos v LIONS match in NSW would be a success if prudent marketing was a reality . Unfortunately it's not! That's the point of the thread and I'm glad it's up as I'm pretty sure that this massive scheduling omission would have passed through to the keeper like a number of issues that exist for rugby league.

I could be wrong but I don’t think Old Trafford has hosted a test since 2013. I know the grand final is played there but it’s not a great pitch for league due to its size.
Rugby league tests are given to Manchester or more recently Liverpool (Anfield) because they are close to the games heartlands and will get crowds, this is the only reason.

Mmmmm? ! Why thank you! Newcastle is a rugby league heartland area and the second largest city in NSW? Many thanks Pommy! Great stuff!

So what was the comparison to London about? Manchester however isn’t a heartland.

Lol. You mentioned heartland first! Not me !? I merely agreed as you strengthened the point being made! Trust me! I don't like going around in circles! And you are very good at going round in circles. It's tiring!

They should....but aren't cos the Aussie's pays it's players too much to make games financially viable..

Dissagree with that it's not financially viable ? A full house in Newcastle or the new stadium at Parramatta plus tv revenue would well and truelly cover associated costs! (haven't even included merchandise sales)It's just that the administrators were poorly advised and /or made a mistake. A very embarassing mistake if you look into it.

What are you basing your disagreement on? If they struggled to turn a profit in Auckland with Tonga why would this game turn a profit in Newcastle?
I think I read previously that the TV rights for Roo’s games in Australia have already been sold as part of the current NRL broadcast deal, so a game in a Newcastle would generate no extra income from TV. I will admit I’m not 100% sure that is correct and I can’t find a link to back it up.

Thats the common belief, and Brad Walter said as much on Twitter a few times.

I'm stating even a full house at $25 per person (not taking into account higher priced tickets ) would have covered the players costs and made a profit. Throw in merchandising. It's a winner . I suspect the Newcastle Council would have thrown in some cost cutting measures as well. DO THE MATHS. Multiply the capacity(33000 by $25. )

Do what maths? I’m not even pretending I know the costs to put on such an event, without knowing those figures I can only take the ARL at their word that it’s not a profitable proposition.

It’s hard to know very mixed reporting and no confirmation from nrl. Some say barely broke even, this one claims they made $1million! Considering players took a massive pay cut from $20k to $3k the nrl would have some explaining to do if they made a massive profit!

https://www.smh.com.au/sport/nrl/us...-profits-from-tonga-test-20181224-p50o2z.html

From cost point of view you’d be looking at $380k in player payments plus around $200k for stadium hire, plus other staff and advertising costs. GB would expect around $350-500k. So the game would need to bring in over $1mill to make it worthwhile. That would require a sell out of WSS at around $30 ticket avg price plus decent corporate box sales. I can see why the nrl don’t have confidence in themselves to achieve this, they couldn’t organise a successful RLWC, they are probably best leaving these things to others!
