When and where will the jobs for decent pay come from to alleviate pressure on the average Papua New Guinean? The informal economy regularly fares poorly. Representing up to 80 per cent of the population who are largely subsistence farmers, it is underutilised as a true source of wealth generation for the country. Of a population around 10 million plus, about 270,000 are formally employed, and those “lucky” ones will earn at minimum, K280 (A$120.00) per fortnight. That is not a sustainable income in a country stricken by increased cost-of-living pressures.Practical steps to alleviate Papua New Guinea’s unemployment crisis | Lowy Institute

It wasn't really about the yanks though was it. It rated its socks off in Australia and the media hype leading into it was insane. If the event can get that many travelling, then it is absolutely worth something (which is why they are looking to get the English teams involved, more travelling fans).I disagree about Las Vegas. 0.1% of Americans watched it. Most fans in attendance were Aussies. Media referred to it as "Aussie rugby". The only beneficiaries of the exercise were the Nevada tourism industry. I worry about how many people will show up in the upcoming years.
I hate to say it, but Yanks will never care about anything that ain't of Yankee Doodle origin. Origin in California didn't work. Kiwis vs Lions in Denver didn't work. Neither did Las Vegas.
The media hyped it up because Australians are desperate to be recognised by Americans as their equals. Americans think it's cute how Australians worship them, but they don't view us as their equals.It wasn't really about the yanks though was it. The next 10 years will be Perth & New Zealand 2 at a minimum. Potentially PNG too. You're looking at least 15 years before they even consider a Wellington teams. Probably closer to 20 years.Just make a 3rd team for Wellington, way down the track, that southern orcas brand seems to be pretty well thought out... best to capitalise on the Christchurch bidders first then a decade later ask for interest in Wellington after that
wtf? Nrl game day revenue is only from: Vegas, origin, all stars, magic weekend, test matches and finals. Club gate revenue has nothing to do with nrl lolI just looked at the NRL's press release on its finances to see where its profit is coming from.
Key points of the NRL’s performance in 2023 included:
- Revenue growing 18% from $107.3m to $701.m, driven by new media rights deal and record sponsorship, wagering and game day income;
- NRL broadcast figures outstripping AFL, with 93.2m viewers tuning into Telstra Premiership matches on Nine and Fox Sports compared to 91m for AFL’s free-to-air and pay-tv coverage. Overall, rugby league viewership was 171.8m, making the code Australia’s most watched sport;
- Huge growth of interest in the expanded NRLW, with 7.2m viewers watching NRLW compared to 6.1m AFLW viewers - despite the rival code playing more than twice as many matches (99 to 48). More than 1m viewers tuned into the NRLW grand final, which was watched by a crowd of 40649 fans at Accor Stadium, while NRLW content views were up 31% on NRL.com and video views by 48%;
- Average crowds of 20,300 for the regular season and finals;3.1m NRL accounts, with 450,000 new fans signing up, while the NRL increased its lead as the largest Australian sport on TikTok with 1.22m followers, along with 1.63m followers on Instagram;
- The lowest operating costs of any Australian sport on an expense to revenue ratio of 22.2% - down from 25.5% in 2022, and;
- Grassroots participation increasing by 9% to more than 192,000 registered players, with male playing numbers up 5% and female playing numbers growing by 12%.
Game stronger than ever after record breaking 2023
The NRL announced an operating surplus of $58.2 million after generating more than $700m revenue from a season in which TV viewers, attendances and participation figures were all up.www.nrl.com
The increase in revenue from game day was on the back of high attendances and membership sales for the Broncos and Dolphins. The Broncos and Dolphins generated the most from sponsorship. Attendances for the Cowboys and Titans increased too, with the former having one of the largest sponsorship packages in the NRL.
If we add teams in Christchurch, Perth and Port Moresby then game day revenue will fall substantially.
Port Moresby can only fit 15,000 into its ground. Its corporate facilities are poor. There isn't a large amount of cashed up rugby league fans in Port Moresby to generate the same level of game day revenue as the Broncos and Dolphins.
Perth's stadium has a capacity of just 20,500 with poor corporate facilities. It will not generate anywhere as much as the Dolphins.
Christchurch will be similar to Perth. Warriors generated just $11,600,000 from football operations in 2023.
Television ratings increased because of the Dolphins. The same will not hold true for PNG, Perth and Christchurch.
Attendances will decline with the addition of teams from Christchurch, Perth and Port Moresby.
Just adding another non nrl standard stadium to add to Redcliffe, LO and Cronulla.Ticket prices will reflect their ability to pay
right now the ground capacity is only 15k
It needs to be upgraded to include corporate boxes and safety measures

Pretty much sums up the current climate I’d only argue a couple of points;Interesting take on a 2nd NZ NRL team and the popularity of the warriors in New Zealand.
