Now, a little detail to give you an insight into the validity of this piece.
There's 3 journalists that have put their names on it, not 1 but 3,3 journalists have researched and willing to put their reputation on it.

Cant view past the paywall… but can see the header says a 3rd CHCH bid has emerged, and maybe a ’26 entry?

Neither of those things are necessarily good news I reckon. IMO '26 is too soon, and a 3rd bid feels like too many cooks in the kitchen now.

Any other details you can share?

The surge in popularity of the Warriors could see a second New Zealand team fast-tracked into the NRL as early as 2026, with Peter V’landys revealing three bid teams have emerged from Christchurch.

Ex-NRL boss David Moffett is leading one of three hopeful New Zealand bids based out of Christchurch.

The South Island Kea are not only confident that they can become part of an expanded competition, but believe they could expedite their entry as soon as 2026 should the NRL need more time for PNG to be introduced.

We’ve been in contact with the NRL and we are just waiting for them to announce what the pathway looks like for the future,” Moffett said.

We are able to add or change anything they might want once we get a look at the big document.

…..
An unknown third consortium of businessmen have also contacted the NRL expressing interest in a second New Zealand licence. There is a view rugby union is under siege in New Zealand and rugby league could become the dominant code if the NRL launches a two-pronged attack on the iconic All Blacks.
……
It seems only a matter of time before a second New Zealand team joins the NRL, and V’landys is adamant a 19th or 20th franchise on the South Island would not threaten the Warriors.
“New Zealand is a great market for us,” he said.
“Cameron George (Warriors CEO) and the ‘Wahs’ have done a wonderful job for us so we have to look at a second team.…

“The Warriors are the No.1 sports story right now in New Zealand,” he said.
“Peter V’landys is a genius who can see the benefits of a second New Zealand team.
“The NRL will soon amass so much money they will be able to poach any rugby player they want, including All Blacks.
“A Christchurch NRL team would be huge - it would replicate what we have seen in Queensland with the Dolphins and Broncos.
“A second New Zealand NRL team would be massive for the country ... the sport would go to another level.”

Telegraph article is paywalled so I dont know what's being said there, but here's how this is being reported locally:

Hilarious that Sanzar is positioning it as wanting "to ensure we’re giving fans the opportunity to enjoy as much sport as possible"

Absolute bollocks. Fans and teams have been crying out for more afternoon games for years here, but NZR/Sanzar have always resisted it because Sky wanted the evening TV ratings.

This has nothing to do with giving fans what they want because they've always ignored what fans have wanted anyway. This is about giving Sky two bites of the cherry. Fking liars.

Yeah, that's more likely. Why would a broadcaster compete against itself? Makes sense.
But who did they bump ?? 😉

Obvious sky nz know the league is the number one product

our ratings are through the roof
There is a strong case for NZ2 to be introduced ASAP. Christchurch has never been in a better position for an NRL club. The Crusaders were an unstoppable force for decades. Now they're struggling.

Brand new under cover stadium complete in April 2026 . 2 bids ready to go and a 3rd on the way.
This is the easiest decision since another Brisbane team. It's a straight up home run.

Yesterday you were saying chch was too small for a team and the wahs generate too little revenue

lmao

Well to be fair I dont think they'd have got very far trying to change NRL scheduling.

From a fan perspective it's brilliant so I'm not upset at it personally. Canes v Chiefs should be a good game and rolling straight into the Wahs after that makes for a good day. Definitely better than last weekend when Blues and Warriors clashed on Sat night.

Just pissed at the bullshit PR spin trying to make it look like they're doing us all a favour when they're only just looking out for themselves.
